Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who directed this episode?

Answer: Jackie Cooper

Jackie Cooper started in show business as a child actor, perhaps best remembered for "The Champ" (1931) and "Treasure Island" (1934). In the 1950s and 60s, he had the starring roles in the TV series "The People's Choice" and "Hennesey", among many guest roles on other shows.

His final acting role was in 1987 in the movie "Surrender". In the mid-1970 he turned to directing for most of his career and directed 13 episodes during the first two seasons of "M*A*S*H".
2. What was the gung-ho colonel's name?

Answer: Buzz Brighton

After having a bullet removed, he is recuperating at the 4077th and seems much too anxious to get back to the front. As he is talking with the surgeons, he keeps slamming his hand down on the arm of the chair and his large ring makes an annoying sound, indicating his aggressive nature.

The surgeons investigate his military record and find he has one of the highest casualty rates. They are determined to try to keep him from going back to active service. The role was excellently played by Leslie Nielsen, who was just beginning to dip his toe into comedic roles.
3. Where was the colonel wounded?

Answer: right leg

When the bullet is removed, the colonel asks for it, probably as a memento of the battle. He refuses to use a cane to help with walking and thinks that walking under his own power, he will heal more quickly and be able to return to battle sooner.
4. Did Father Mulcahy appear in this episode?

Answer: No

Father Mulcahy (William Christopher) appeared sporadically in early seasons, but became a regular character in season 5.
5. Who said, "I want to feel your leg"?

Answer: Frank

Hawkeye and Trapper made Frank look like he was gay to the colonel. They also planted high heels by his cot and had women's garments brought to the Swamp and handed to him, all reinforcing that image. When Frank sat beside the colonel and said he wanted to feel the colonel's leg, the colonel, being a man's man, was predictably reluctant, saying, "It feels fine," as he leaned away.
6. An announcement was made over the PA about a Jeep that needed to be moved. However, it wasn't in camp but back in the U.S. What state was it in?

Answer: Illinois

Specifically in Chicago. Anyone who had a vehicle illegally parked back in the States would have a difficult time getting there to move it.
7. What is one thing the surgeons NOT do to try to make the colonel think he is having post-operative psychological problems?

Answer: Hint he has an developing infection

The surgeons switch tents since the colonel assumes it is next to the lightpost. They have Radar slip a glass of milk under the tent and tell the colonel that he had requested it when he hadn't. They also hint that Henry and Margaret are an item and Henry is gunning for him.

They get Henry drunk and tell him he has to qualify in target practice, hand him a gun, and turn him loose in camp.
8. What problem do the surgeons tell Margaret that the colonel has in order to get her into his tent?

Answer: He had lost confidence in himself as a man.

Of course, it was a ploy to get Margaret in the tent with the colonel in a compromising position so Henry would enter and find them together while brandishing a pistol. Margaret was always fawning over male officers, especially those of a higher rank and good looks, so she was easily manipulated and arrived dressed seductively in a tight sweater and shorts.
9. What does Henry say when the colonel inquires why Margaret is called Hot Lips?

Answer: It's not because she's left-handed.

This is also part of the ploy to get the colonel together with Margaret.
10. In the end scene, what celebrity does Hawkeye mention?

Answer: Dick Haymes

Dick Haymes (1918-80) was born in Argentina. He was a popular vocalist in the 1940s and 50s. In the mid-1930s, he started to act in films. Some of his movies include "One Touch of Venus", "State Fair," and "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim," among others, and he even did a few guest appearances in TV shows. Hawkeye mentions him because he says he wants a nose job, turned up like Dick Haymes, as he pushes up the tip of his nose.
