Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first leg of the race, eleven teams needed to find the Hand in the Sand, a monument on the beaches of Punta del Este in which country?

Answer: Uruguay

Departing from the starting line on Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, California, eleven teams were told to fly to the city of Montevideo, Uruguay where they could make their way to their first clue box waiting in front of the Hand in the Sand, a statue on the rough waters of the Atlantic Coast. To get there, teams needed to take a bus from Montevideo to Punta del Este.

The Detour was also held in this city at the Conrad Hotel and Casino before the leg ended at the nearby Casapueblo in Moldonado.
2. In Leg 2, teams chose between 'Tango' and 'Perro' during their Detour. The 'Perro' task took them to which landmark depicted?

Answer: La Flor

La Flor, located in Buenos Aires' Recoleta neighbourhood, marked the end of a mile-long course designed for the 'Perro' task in which teams needed to bring eight dogs to different stations to receive their next clue. In 'Tango', teams needed to visit a famous tango theater and match photos to the dancers onstage for their clue. Following the Detour, teams needed to take a trip to San Antonio de Areco to finish the leg.

While in Buenos Aires, teams also visited Evita Peron's grave in Recoleta Cemetery.
3. Legs 4 and 5 consisted of tasks in Russia (before continuing onward to Africa). In which museum did teams need to locate "Return of the Prodigal Son"?

Answer: The Hermitage

The Hermitage, part of the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, was the first spot visited in Leg 5 while all of the rest of Leg 4 was in the same city. Here, teams visited the Battleship Aurora and Catherine's Palace, the fourth Pit Stop (but not before sampling a kilogram of caviar for the Road Block in Pushkin).

At the Hermitage, teams needed to find Rembrandt's "Return of the Prodigal Son" before heading to the airport. Aside from this, some teams also played a bit of ice hockey while others enjoyed a shot of vodka on the Leg 4 Detour task.
4. In Leg 5, the Pit Stop was held in front of what Cairo landmark?

Answer: The Sphinx

Flying to Cairo in Leg 5, teams needed to locate Cairo Tower before embarking on several unique tasks at the Giza Plateau. While Colin and Christie maintained a strong lead by taking the first Fast Forward of the race (placing first and stepping on the mat at the Sphinx nearly six hours ahead of other teams), everyone else climbed pyramids, searched for treasures in an ancient grotto, and pulled stone slabs across the desert (or, like Charla and Mirna, rode camels) for the Detour.

At the end of the Leg, teams checked in at the Sphinx where, notably, Linda and Karen were the first team to experience a new non-elimination twist; they would begin the next leg with no money to their name.
5. Continuing through Egypt in Leg 6, teams visited the temples at Abu Simbel.

Answer: False

Instead, after leaving Cairo, teams took a domestic flight southward down the Nile to Luxor, Egypt and visited the temple complex of Karnak to find their clue and Yield. In addition to this, teams found their archaeological-themed Road block at Habu Temple. Here, one member of each team was required to dig up a scarab found in a marked plot of sand before both members took a boat down the Nile River to the Pit Stop at Crocodile Island.

The temples of Abu Simbel are located near the southern border of Egypt and would have been too far for the racers if they'd flown to Luxor. The depicted temple is Karnak.
6. In Leg 7, teams ended up visiting an overlook in Lake Manyara National Park in which African nation?

Answer: Tanzania

Leaving Egypt in Leg 7, teams needed to fly to Nairobi, Kenya to sign up for one of three charter flights to a mystery destination, specifically Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Once there, teams completed a Detour involving either an apiary or a furniture delivery task before one team member cooked and devoured an entire ostrich egg for the Road Block. Both members then needed to ride a zipline to an overlook in Lake Manyara National Park to reach the seventh Pit Stop.

Here, Charla and Mirna were eliminated from the race.
7. In the beginning of Leg 8, teams needed to visit which famous hotel in Dubai for a clue box on the helicopter pad?

Answer: Burj Al Arab

Making their way from Tanzania to the Middle East, teams had to visit Dubai's seven-star hotel resting on the water, the Burj Al Arab. Once there they needed to advance to the helicopter pad near the very top. The five teams competing in Dubai also needed to stop off at a local abra station and then either take a tandem skydive to a desert oasis or go off-roading in the dunes. Kami and Karli arrived at the Pit Stop in last, but remained in the game in a non-elimination leg.
8. In Leg 9, did teams use the Yield at the location depicted?

Answer: No

Upon arriving in the city of Kolkata, India in Leg 9, teams needed to head to the landmark known as Sahid Minar, also known as the Ochterlony Monument. It was there that they encountered the Yield, the ninth of the race, though teams wouldn't use it until the eleventh leg (for the only time in the competition).

While in Kolkata, teams needed to make bricks from scratch and one team attempted to pursue the Fast Forward, a luck-bringing head shaving ceremony, but backed out at the last moment. Brandon and Nicole, who made this failed attempt, placed last but were spared by a non-elimination Pit Stop.
9. The penultimate leg of the race was held in El Nido in the Philippines. During a memorable Road Block task, what did teams need to do?

Answer: Mechanically ascend a cliff

After traveling through New Zealand in Leg 10, teams stopped off in Manila, Philippines in Leg 11 and the El Nido region, a beautiful paradise of rocky cliffs and luxurious beaches. For the Road Block, the four teams needed to use mechanical ascenders to climb a rope suspended from a rock cliff a total of one hundred fifty feet.

This proved difficult for even the most physical of competitors and resulted in Linda and Karen becoming the final team eliminated after Colin overtook them in the task.
10. In the final leg of the race, before returning to the United States, teams visited the Olympic Park in which Canadian city?

Answer: Calgary

Before ending the race in Dallas, Texas, teams needed to fly to Calgary, Alberta to complete a series of wintery tasks in the Olympic Village. After walking up the slopes of the Rockies to the Continental Divide, teams could choose to either ride a bobsled down a track or ride custom bicycles along a ski course.

The latter task proved taxing for an exhausted Brandon and Nicole. Following this, Chip and Kim won the race by securing an earlier flight southbound to Dallas-Ft. Worth. Crossing the finish line at Trammell Crow Park, they became the oldest team to win the million dollars.
