Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To begin this iteration of the race, teams departed on their adventure from which Los Angeles landmark?

Answer: Griffith Observatory

This season eleven teams hiked up to their starting line atop Griffith Observatory. Here, Phil warned the teams that there would be twists ahead and a first task which would take their breath away. In addition, there would be a second Express Pass won by the winner of the first leg which could be given to a team of their choice by Leg 4. When Phil gave the go-ahead, teams would be able to run down the stairs to their bags, collect their belonging, and hop into new Ford Fusion cars to head to LAX.

The first ones there would get on the earlier flight to their first international destination.
2. In Leg 1, teams went to which island destination?

Answer: Bora Bora

Hopping into their new Ford vehicles, teams raced to LAX to catch a ride on the first possible flight to the island of Tahiti and, once there, they would connect on a flight to the tropical paradise of Bora Bora. The first five teams, arriving in the city of Papeete, vowed to work together and give the second Express Pass to the first runner-up out of fairness. Only time would tell if teams would keep their word.
Upon touching down in Bora Bora, teams were able to locate their first cluebox on the beach next to the runway.
3. During the first Road Block in Leg 1, team members needed to participate in which adventurous activity?

Answer: Skydiving

As soon as teams touched down and opened their first clues, they were confronted with a daring Road Block task. Signing up for rides on a helicopter (two people at a time), they would rise ten thousand feet over the island and perform a tandem skydive. Upon landing they would receive their next clue and their partner would be waiting for them on the island of Anau.

The jumpers included Winnie, Jamil, John, Connor, Chuck, Anthony, Caroline, Mona, Max, Matt, and Meghan. In an odd twist, Mona, one of the participants from the second flight, ended up accidentally signing up on the last flight even though she was at the sign-up board earlier.
4. During the second Road Block, teams needed to search for their clues in which of these?

Answer: Sand castles

After the racers finished the first Road Block they received clues informing them that they could continue to Eden Beach on Motu Piti A'au. Here, a second Road Block task was encountered. For this one, the person who did not complete the skydive needed to participate. On the beach were hundreds of sand castles.

The racer needed to knock them down, one at a time, to (hopefully) uncover a clue inside. If they had to knock down a sandcastle, they needed to rebuild it before carrying on, regardless of what they found inside. Because the task was tedious in the hot sun, three teams (Max and Katie, Caroline and Jennifer, and Matt and Daniel) opted to take the four hour penalty instead of complete the task.

They raced to the Pit Stop on even ground.
5. Which team was eliminated at the end of the first leg?

Answer: Matt and Daniel

After the second Road Block, teams needed to run down the beach and assemble outrigger canoes (known as va'as) to take them one mile to the Pit Stop at the Motu Cafe. The winners of this first leg were Jessica and John who ended up winning themselves the Express Passes, one of which would need to be given to another team of their choice before the end of Leg 4.

After quitting the second Road Block, Max and Katie, Caroline and Jennifer, and Matt and Daniel raced to the Pit Stop to avoid last place.

They arrived in that order and Matt and Daniel became the first team to be eliminated from the race.
6. At the beginning of Leg 2, how many teams did not depart from the Pit Stop (in their water taxis) at 7:30am, the earliest possible time?

Answer: Two

Although some of the earlier teams departed from the first Pit stop near the Motu Cafe at 3:00am (twelve hours after their arrival time), some, due to penalties, were unable to depart until about four hours later. Luckily for these two teams, the earlier eight were bunched up until 7:30am at which point their water taxis would arrive to take them to the famous Hilton Bora Bora Nui on Motu Toopua. Once there, the teams proceeded on foot, uphill, to the chapel managed by the hotel.

There, one at a time, they would receive a blessing from the local priest before collecting their next clue.
7. During the Detour in Leg 2, teams who didn't choose the 'Take a Trunk' option instead searched for which of these?

Answer: Pearls

Departing from the Hilton Bora Bora Nui, teams needed to grab snorkel gear and hop back into their water taxis to head out into the open water. About half a mile out, they were able to decide on a Detour task. In 'Pick a Pearl', teams needed to dive into the water, grab strings of clams buoyed to the sea floor, and open them up to find two red pearls. Once they had both they could trade them for a clue.

In 'Take a Trunk', teams needed to don a large helmet apparatus and head to the sea floor to find a chest, open it up, and set up the contents inside to have an underwater picnic. Joey and Meghan, Jessica and John, Dave and Connor, Anthony and Bates, Chuck and Wynona, and Pam and Winnie did the former task while Mon and Beth, Max and Katie, Caroline and Jennifer, and Idries and Jamil did the latter.
8. After completing their Detour task in Leg 2, teams were told to navigate their way to the next clue aboard which of the following?

Answer: Jet skis

Immediately after the Detour task, teams were told to swim to a line-up of nearby jet skis. Once aboard, they would need to follow a local map leading them to their next clue on the shores of Motu Tapu, considered to be the most photographed location in the South Pacific.

Here, teams would be able to locate the Road Block. Due to the vagueness of the map, some teams became hopelessly lost, falling to near the back of the pack.
9. Which team member completed the stilts-based Road Block in Leg 2?

Answer: Max

Arriving on Moto Tapu, teams needed to choose a well-balanced member to partake in a local game and test of strength. Hopping into a pair of stilts, team members needed to navigate their way across a patch of sand while knocking a coconut from one end to the other. If they fell off they could leave the coconut, but they would need to return to the start to try again. Joey, Jessica, Connor, Anthony, Chuck, Beth, Pam, Caroline, Max, and Jamil all participated in this task and while some finished it in their first tries, others took much longer to get the hang of the devices.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 2?

Answer: Idries and Jamil

After completing the Road Block, teams were able to proceed on foot to the far end of the island to check in at their second Pit Stop. Here, in a footrace, Anthony and Bates received the first place prize, a trip for two to London courtesy of Travelocity.

The second place team, Dave and Connor, were worried when Dave sustained an injury on the way to the Pit Stop mat-- a ruptured achilles tendon. Although Pam and Winnie had trouble with several tasks and navigation issues in this leg and two teams started with four-hour penalties, it was Idries and Jamil, marred by fears of open water, who were unable to keep pace.

They became the second eliminated team.
