Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 3, teams departed from Bora Bora and ended up reaching their next task in what New Zealand city?

Answer: Christchurch

Heading out from Motu Tapu, Bora Bora in the morning, teams were told to head to the airport in Bora Bora to catch a flight back to Papeete, Tahiti. Once there, they would need to take another flight connecting in Auckland going to Christchurch, New Zealand, Phil Keoghan's hometown. Since teams could not receive flights to Christchurch until they reached Auckland, they had to wait until the following day to book tickets; only Pam and Winnie, the last team to leave the Pit Stop, got on the first flight out. Five teams took the second, two were on the third, and one ended up on the final flight.
2. In Leg 3, which team was given the race's second Express Pass?

Answer: Dave and Connor

Heading to Papeete, Dave and Connor were instructed to go to a local hospital to get a sonogram for Dave's foot; heading to the Pit Stop in the previous leg of the race, he pulled and tore his Achilles Heel. He was told that the injury would worsen if he continued to race, but, after receiving a boot, they both decided to keep going.

At the airport in Bora Bora, John and Jessica opted to hand over their second Express Pass as per their original alliance agreement. Landing in New Zealand, surprisingly, the injured father an son managed to keep up.
3. Which was the only team to complete the 'Reel It In' Detour task in New Zealand in Leg 3?

Answer: Chuck and Wynona

Heading out of Christchurch, teams needed to drive themselves to the Rakaia River Gorge. Once there, they needed to take a number for a proceeding jet boat tour, but only after a night's stay, camping out next to the river. At 6:00am, teams could receive their Detour task, a choice between 'Rev It Up' and 'Reel It In'. For both, they needed to navigate ATVs to the Detour site.

In 'Rev It Up', teams needed to drive modded, manual vintage cars around a series of cones. If both team members could combine their times and complete the course in under eighty-three seconds, they could continue.

In 'Reel It In', teams needed to head to the lake and catch one fish each, twelve inches in length. Only Chuck and Wynona completed the latter task. To avoid taking too much time, Dave and Connor used their newly-acquired Express Pass to skip the Detour.
4. In Leg 3, teams needed to complete a Schmozzle race for their Road Block. How many eggs did they need to retrieve?

Answer: Twelve

After the Detour, teams ended up driving themselves to the next route marker at Mt. Hutt Station. This was the Road Block. For this task, one member of each team had to jump into a 'Schmozzle Race', a pastime involving dressing up in gumboots, scubbies, and a burlap sack, then taking a shepherd and a farmdog through a confusing course of molasses, feathers, slip'n'slides, and smelly bogwater collecting chicken eggs along the way.

When they delivered twelve eggs they could get their next clue. Connor, John, Winnie, Chuck, Jennifer, Meghan, Mona, Anthony, and Katie completed this task.
5. Which team was first to arrive at the Pit Stop in New Zealand in Leg 3?

Answer: Dave and Connor

After the Road Block, teams were told to head to Pit Stop at Terrace Downs, a world-renowned adventure retreat in Windwhistle, New Zealand. After using the Express Pass, Dave and Connor stayed in the lead, despite injury, to meet Phil's dad (and dog) and receive a prize from Travelocity-- a trip for two to Bangkok (including, ironically, kickboxing lessons).

They, and everyone else, were surprised to discover that their race had not ended; they all received their next clues and Leg 4 had begun. The last team to arrive, Chuck and Wynona, were not told that they would encounter a Speed Bump task in the proceeding leg of the race.

They were not eliminated.
6. Heading immediately into Leg 4, teams were told to fly to what Indonesian island?

Answer: Bali

Receiving their clue from Phil and told to keep racing, teams were instructed to fly to Christchurch to secure the fastest possible flights to the island of Bali, Indonesia. All teams needed to work through travel agencies and, as such, four teams went on the first flight through Perth, two traveled via Singapore, and three when through Kuala Lumpur. Upon arriving in Indonesia, teams needed to take a taxi to the Ubud Sacred Monkey Forest. Once there they would need to give the monkeys a marked coconut and wait for them to open it with their teeth and claws to retrieve the clue inside.
7. How many teams completed the 'Fruity Top' Detour task in Indonesia in Leg 4?

Answer: Seven

Opening an encapsulated clue found within their coconuts, teams read their Detour tasks. The first, 'Sandy Bottom', told teams to find a location on the volcanic Ayung River. Once there they needed to use baskets to carry river sand atop their head from the bottom of the river, up a steep hill two hundred yards to a marked bucket. Once they filled the bucket enough they could receive their next clue. Only Mona and Beth and Jessica and John finished this task.

The other seven teams did 'Fruity Top' taking them to the village of Batuan to construct an elaborate fruit offering known as a gebogan. Once the offering, carried atop a head in a procession, was delivered to a nearby temple, the teams could receive a blessing and get their clue.
8. During the Road Block in Indonesia in Leg 4, teams had to find a surfboard with what image on the front?

Answer: A tribal chief

After the Detour, teams were told to take their cabs to Uluwatu Surf Beach. Once there, they found a Road Block task looking for a team member ready to 'get gnarly and be worked in a way-gnarly challenge'. For this task, one member of each team needed to locate the nearby surf shop and then search through the boards to find one featuring an image of something all of the contestants have encountered on the race thus far (the image was the tribal chief from the second leg of the race in Bora Bora). Once they found it they could reunite with their partner; if they got it wrong, they would not know until they reached the Pit Stop and they would need to head back. Winnie, Connor, Max, Caroline, Joey, Mona, Anthony, Chuck, and John finished this task.
9. Which team was eliminated in Indonesia at the end of a grueling fourth leg?

Answer: Jessica and John

After retrieving their surfboards, teams headed to an overlook at Uluwatu Surf Beach to check into their fourth Pit Stop. If they had the correct surfboard, Phil would check them in. Dave and Connor ended up winning their second consecutive leg of the race (despite Dave's injury) and ended up winning $5,000 each for their efforts.

In the end, Jessica and John could not make up the time that they lost switching Detour tasks earlier on. Arriving at the Road Block in last place and then taking over an hour to find the right board, they ended up becoming the third team eliminated from the race leaving only eight in the running.
10. Was an Express Pass used in Indonesia in Leg 4?

Answer: No

Despite winning the first leg of the race and receiving an Express Pass for doing so, Jessica and John neglected to use it. After switching Detour tasks and knowing they were near the back of the pack, they arrived at the Road Block in last place where John, opting to finish the task instead of use their freebie, was beaten by Chuck.

This marked the first time in "Amazing Race" history that a team was eliminated while still in possession of their Express Pass. It would be removed from the game.
