Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Amazing Race 39" did not start in the United States.

Answer: True

For the first time in a non-COVID season, "The Amazing Race" took its teams out of the U.S. and kicked off the competition in a foreign country (as they had done this previously in season 34 (in Munich), season 36 (in Puerto Vallarta), and season 38 (in Hoorn)).

At the beginning of this season, teams came together at the starting line at Jack Poole Plaza, having been flown over the harbour in floatplanes, and they were greeted by a Squamish Nation welcome ceremony. Before the race began in earnest, though, there were some new twists.
2. How many Express Passes became available to teams, in play at the start of this race?

Answer: Thirteen

Before teams headed out, Phil informed each of them that they would be receiving an Express Pass-- each of them-- meaning that thirteen teams would each have one of these helpful tools in their pocket for use before the end of the sixth leg. The catch was that only one team could use an Express Pass at any given task; they would need to be quick and strategic to make the best use of it.

Heading out from Jack Poole Plaza, racers opened their first clue and proceeded, on by any means, to BC Place Stadium.
3. During the first Road Block, held at BC Place in Vancouver, racers had to jump and catch which of these while wearing bear paws?

Answer: Salmon

Arriving at BC Place, teams pulled numbers for their first Road Block, a task which asked 'who wants to go fly fishing?'. In this challenge, the selected team member had to head into the stadium and leap from the rafters nearly three hundred feet above the field. The catch (as there usually is) was that teams needed to do this with a pair of bear claw gloves, and in the descent they would need to do their best to catch a massive salmon hanging in the air. They could trade their salmon for the next clue.

Matt, Garrett, Ann-Marie, Charlotte, Jaime, Doug, Jenn, Daisha, Dafina, Andrea, Joanna, Javi, and Zach were selected for this task. Erin and Javi, arriving at the Road Block in twelfth, used their Express Pass immediately upon arriving.

Following this task, racers could hop on a water taxi and find their next clue box waiting at the Vancouver Maritime Museum.
4. If racers didn't complete the 'Run It Up' Detour task in Leg 1, they could instead complete a task that involved which means of transport?

Answer: Canoe

Teams reaching the Vancouver Maritime Museum found a Detour, and this one had them choose between 'Run It Up' and 'Paddle It Out'.

Racers completing 'Run It Up' walked to nearby Elsje Point to learn the twenty-five maritime flags posted there. With these in mind, they could head down to the docks on the waterfront to meet with a ship captain who would quiz them on five of the flags, at random. If they could grab and hoist those five flags in the correct order, in two minutes, they'd get their next clue.

Teams choosing the more physical 'Paddle It Out' walked to Teatotaler Beach to hop into a tandem outrigger canoe. If they could paddle to one of six buoys in False Creek, they could get a clue and paddle back to shore.

Doug and Dylan used their Express Pass to skip 'Paddle It Out' and pull themselves out of the back of the pack while Dafina and Saran used theirs for 'Run It Up'.
5. Which team was eliminated at Vancouver's VanDusen Botanical Garden at the end of Leg 1?

Answer: Zach and Nate

Racers completing the Detour were told to take taxi to their first Pit Stop where the last team would be eliminated, and arriving at the mat in Vancouver's VanDusen Botanical Garden, they'd find out their fates next to Heron Lake. Erin and Javi, who used the Express Pass early, managed to hold onto that lead throughout the whole first leg to check in in first place, winning themselves a six-day trip for two to Turkiye courtesy of Expedia.

The final two teams raced neck-and-neck in the outrigger canoe task and headed to the Pit Stop at the same time, and Daisha and Dalton narrowly edged brothers Zach and Nate out at the mat. As such, Zach and Nate placed thirteenth, heading home at the end of this leg.
6. The race's second leg sent teams to which Spanish city?

Answer: Madrid

Leaving from Robson Square in Vancouver at the start of their second leg, racers were instructed to locate Silkway Travel in Richmond, the south side of the city near the airport. Here, they'd need to book a flight to Madrid, the capital of Spain, which all of them did on a connection through Paris.

Once teams landed, they needed to proceed via Metro from the airport to Batán Metro Station. At Plaza de Toros El Batán, they'd be able to find their next clue box waiting for them.
7. Teams faced a Road Block upon arriving in Spain that had them engaging with which famous Spanish event?

Answer: La Tomatina

Arriving at the Plaza de Toros El Batán, racers opened the clue for their Road Block. For this, the selected team member needed to be 'feeling saucy' as they experienced an "Amazing Race" Switchback. The task had them digging deep into a massive pile of tomatoes in the middle of a bullring, searching through them for one containing a small capsule that would identify their next destination, the Puerta del Sol. At the same time, racers would be pelted by tomatoes by locals emulating La Tomatina.

Dylan, Saran, Erin, Conner, Riley, Cody, Matt, Anuar, Ali, Dalton, Jody, and Katie elected to complete this task though Daisha and Dalton skipped this task by leveraging their Express Pass.
8. Which team did NOT complete the ''Slice of Ham' Detour task in Spain in Leg 2?

Answer: Michelle and Matt

Arriving at Puerta del Sol in Central Madrid, racers collected a Detour clue and chose between 'Slice of Ham' and 'Slice of History'. Those completing 'Slice of Ham' had to locate Extrem Puro Extremadura to collect a leg of jamón ibérico. Then, once they delivered it on foot to Perro Paco Restaurant, a kilometre away, they needed to slice fifty grams of ham from the delivered leg. At the same time, they would need to finish constructing a charcuterie board. If they presented both correctly, they'd get their next clue.

Ali and Joanna, Erin and Javi, Anuar and Andrea, Ann-Marie and Riley, Daisha and Dalton, Doug and Dylan, Cody and Jaime, and Conner and Garrett went to this challenge, and of these, Cody and Jaime used their Express Pass to skip this task (skipping the line).
9. Teams completing 'Slice of History' for their Leg 2 Detour task had to identify which of these?

Answer: Famous people

Those not hungry for ham could instead select 'Slice of History', a task sending them to the world-famous Museo Nacional del Prado. There, racers had to locate a dozen people on the grounds dressed as famous historical icons from Spain, each of whom would provide them with a fun fact. Then, heading to a nearby game station in another plaza, teams had to match the image of the famous person with their names, deriving those from the given facts. Matching all twelve got them the next clue.

Dafina and Safran, Michelle and Matt, Jody and Jenn, and Katie and Charlotte headed to this one with Jody and Jenn using their Express Pass in spite of Jody's strong history knowledge.
10. Which team was eliminated at the end of Leg 2 in Spain?

Answer: Katie and Charlotte

Completing the Detour allowed teams to race to their second Pit Stop next to the statue of Miguel de Cervantes at Plaza de España, right in the middle of Madrid. Taking the Metro to their destination, it was Ali and Joanna, coming up from tenth place in the first leg, who placed first this time, claiming a trip for two from Expedia to Hobart, Tasmania.

After a tough day of navigation in the Metro and streets of Madrid, Katie and Charlotte fell behind leaving the Road Block, accidentally taking the wrong train and being unable to regain ground. The sisters were eliminated in twelfth place.
