Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Vanguard Demon of "Demon's Souls" was almost assuredly designed with the intention of being an unbeatable tutorial boss, as it can easily one-shot the player with its hefty axe. The axe itself is actually obtainable for the player. What axe does the Vanguard Demon wield?

Answer: Dozer Axe

The Dozer Axe has a massive 340 base damage, but the weapon has zero scaling whatsoever. This makes it great for the player's first playthrough, but because its damage output is capped so early, it will fall off the more New Game Pluses the player goes through.

As well, at 30 Strength, a Crushing Greataxe outperforms the Dozer Axe across the board, and the gap only grows the more Strength the player gets because of the former's high Strength scaling. Still, the Dozer Axe is definitely ideal on the very first playthrough and is much easier and less time consuming to get, making it good for speedruns or casual runs that don't intend to go to New Game Plus.
2. Most bosses in "Dark Souls 1" with sliceable tails yield swords as a reward for be-tail-ing them. However, the Dragon King Greataxe is an exception. Which boss' tail must be cut to acquire this weapon?

Answer: Gaping Dragon

The Dragon King's Greataxe is arguably the best Strength-oriented weapon in the entire game, which is quite a claim to make. It may not scale off of anything, but when two-handed, it gains a special effect. Pressing the charged heavy button while two handing it causes the axe to come slamming down atop its target with a mighty shockwave emanating off of the spot.

It deals tons of damage if the axe and shockwave hit, and does fair damage for just the shockwave as well. It is very spammable and powerful, worthy of the 50 Strength the weapon requires of its wielder.
3. The Taurus Demon is likely going to be the average player's second boss of their "Dark Souls 1" playthrough. It wields a massive axe that will be available to the player much later in the game. Where can the player acquire the Demon's Greataxe?

Answer: Demon Ruins

There are nine lesser Taurus Demons congregating with a bunch of lava pools near them at the very floor of the Demon Ruins. All of them have a 5% chance to drop the Demon's Greataxe on defeat. They thankfully respawn infinitely, so it's only a matter of patience for the player to get the axe.
4. Black Knight weapons were seemingly intentionally made to be as annoying as possible to acquire in "Dark Souls 2". Where can the Black Knight Greataxe be found here?

Answer: Iron Keep

The player has to make a commitment to get this thing, because it was basically crammed into a janitor's closet-sized room in a small structure, hovering over lava. The chest itself is surrounded by a whopping three Alonne Captains fought in a very cramped space. To even get to them, the player has to kill two more Alonne Captains, as well as the preceding ten Alonne Knights who will get in their way just to advance this far. In total, the player will have to kill ten Alonne Knights and five Alonne Captains, plus engage in some lethal parkour to get to the structure with the Black Knight Greataxe.

Thankfully, the axe itself is one of the better weapons in this entire game, so it could easily be worth the trek. But the trek itself is quite a journey!
5. Lonesome Gavlaan may seem silly and passive, but if he's provoked, he can bust out his axe to defend himself. He will drop this axe if killed, or he will simply give it to the player as a gift for spending souls at his shop. What axe does Gavlaan wield?

Answer: Gyrm Greataxe

The Gyrm Greataxe has the steepest Strength requirement for its class in the game at 50. Sadly, it only gets decent scaling in return for such a hefty investment. The weapon itself is also short, slow and fairly heavy. Finally, it has a 'sweetspot' mechanic- it will deal more damage the closer the player is to their target, and vice versa.

This unfortunately makes this a pretty terrible choice for a weapon, as there are far better options that the player can use for the investment of 50 Strength.
6. One potential starting weapon in "Bloodborne" is an axe. This very same axe is wielded by Father Gascoigne, whether using him as a helpful summon or squaring off against him during his boss fight. What axe is this?

Answer: Hunter's Axe

The Hunter's Axe has the highest base damage of the player's starting weapon options. However, it is the only one of the three, between itself, the Threaded Cane and Saw Cleaver, which does not have a serrated edge. This sadly means it will do about the same damage to beasts as the others, with slower swing speeds.

This won't hold it back in non-beast fights, ironically such as Father Gascoigne, but it will be noticeable against beasts.
7. The Dwarven Pickaxe in "King's Field" requires a watchful eye to obtain. Where can it be found?

Answer: Great Graveyard

A treasure chest lays behind an illusionary wall inside the Arrow Room. Interacting with this will allow the player to acquire the Dwarven Pickaxe. It is very subtle and easy to miss, however.
8. The Lava Fields of "King's Field" house one of From Software's most under the radar axes, an axe that appeared in the entire "Dark Souls" trilogy along with "Demon's Souls" and even "Elden Ring". What axe is this?

Answer: Crescent Axe

The Crescent Axe has unfortunately flown under the radar all these years because it has consistently been a fairly mediocre weapon. Not even a fun kind of "bad", just underwhelming in every sense. It deals split Magic damage in each perform it has made.
9. "Elden Ring's" Axe of Godfrey's Ash of War, Regal Roar, is incredibly powerful. When using Regal Roar, what is one of the few things that take place?

Answer: The Axe briefly gets a new moveset

When using Regal Roar, the character holds the axe over their head for several seconds, lets out a large battle cry, then stomps on the ground. For 45 seconds, their light attacks are much faster, and their heavy attacks have been altered to distinctly resemble many attacks used by Godfrey himself during his boss fight.

For example, by holding the right-handed charge as long as possible, the player can drag the axe as they sprint forward for several seconds, and end the maneuver with an upper cut with the axe.
10. The Stormhawk Axe is one of the best axes in the game. It is notably wielded by Nepheli Loux. Sadly, there is only way to obtain this axe or, rather, these axes as they can only be acquired looted in a pair. What has to happen?

Answer: Nepheli must die

If she passes away or is otherwise killed, Nepheli will drop both of her Stormhawk Axes. She will not pass away unless the player ignores her questline completely and then beats the game. If the player does do her questline, it will then become mandatory to straight up kill her if they want her axes.

This isn't possible if the player completely finishes her questline, so they'd need to do the deed somewhere in between.
