Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Mystery Egg that Mr. Pokemon gives you will hatch into which Pokemon?

Answer: Togepi

Much of the first to-do in "Pokemon Gold/Silver" is in reaching Mr. Pokemon on Route 30, collecting the Mystery Egg, and returning it to Professor Elm in New Bark City. It will end up back in your possession after completing the first gym in Violet City, at which point it'll be left to you to let it hatch on its own, a task which takes more than two thousand five hundred steps with the egg in your party of six.

If hatched, the egg will be revealed to be a Togepi, and showing this to Professor Elm will result in you receiving an Everstone, a holdable item that prevents a Pokemon from evolving.
2. The Pokemon blocking the three-way route on Route 36 is a Sudowoodo, and you can only fight it if you use which item?

Answer: Squirt Bottle

You'll encounter this route-blocking Pokemon at the crossroads at Route 36 a short time after you proceed out of Violet City, but you won't be able to do anything about it until you wind your way around the map and collect a Squirt Bottle from a house in Goldenrod City (and even this is only possible after you defeat Whitney). When used on this rock-type foe, it'll cause it to spring into battle much in the same way that Snorlax did in "Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow" a generation before, and you can defeat or capture it at your leisure. Doing so will open the route to Ecruteak City to the north.

There's only one of these in the game, so if you do want it, this is your only time to catch it.
3. Defeating Team Rocket at the well outside of Azalea Town will result in which of these Pokemon being found throughout the area?

Answer: Slowpoke

Part of the visit to Azalea Town will involve needing to rid the area of Team Rocket, active there for whichever nefarious reasons they have in this continent, and while local craftsman Kurt heads down there to start kicking them out, it'll fall to you to descend into the watering hole instead to unblock the well.

The Slowpokes, who drink from the waters inside, will be held hostage, but defeating the Team Rocket Grunts will bring things back to normal, allowing the locals and the Slowpokes to roam around the city however they please and opening the door to Azalea Town's gym.
4. Which new Eevee evolution is created by evolving Eevee with high friendship during the daytime?

Answer: Espeon

The new Eeveelutions-- in fact, all of them-- are encountered for the first time when you reach Ecruteak City as the Kimono Girls will use them to battle you, one at a time, on the main stage of the Ecruteak Dance Theater. Though Flareon, Vaporeon, and Jolteon aren't new news to a "Pokemon" player, both Umbreon and Espeon will be, demonstrating the evolved form created from levelling up an Eevee with high friendship during the day and night, respectively. Friendship levels up passively as long as you have the Pokemon in your party, walking around, but there are other means through which this can be expedited.
5. Eight different 'Baby' Pokemon are introduced in "Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal". Which Pokemon does not receive a baby here?

Answer: Meowth

The eight Baby Pokemon featured in the game are Pichu, Igglybuff, Cleffa, Togepi, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, and Magby, and all of them could only be obtained in these games by breeding Pokemon to receive eggs that would, subsequently, hatch into the resultant new Pokemon. With this in mind, Pichu, Igglybuff, Cleffa, and Togepi would only hatch and level (in Baby form) with high friendship.

The others would, however, have different criteria; Tyroguem for instance, would always evolve at level 20, but its resultant evolution would be based on its Attack and Defence stats, transforming it into Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, or the brand-new Hitmontop.
6. What Pokemon can be found at the top of the Olivine City Lighthouse?

Answer: Ampharos

When trainers arrive in Olivine City they won't be able to attempt Jasmine's gym there because she'll be at the top of the trainer-laden lighthouse taking care of the sick Ampharos found at the top. You'll need to travel across the sea to Cianwood City's pharmacy to get the strong medication that'll solve the issue, and that'll allow you to fight for the sixth badge.

The Ampharos found there can not be fought or caught; technically you can't find them in the wild. To get an Ampharos you need to level Mareep up to Flaaffy and then onward to Ampharos at level 30.
7. The first 'shiny' Pokemon in the series, what colour is the Gyarados in the Lake of Rage?

Answer: Red

Heading north of Mahogany Town you'll come across the Lake of Rage at the far north end of Route 43, and here, you'll need to investigate what's going on in the waters that's causing the Magikarps to evolve into Gyarados unprovoked. One large Gyarados, floating out there, is red, and it'll be a mandatory battle to face off against it (and yes, it is catchable). Completing this fight will reward you with the Red Scale (which can be traded off to the right person if you choose) and you'll get the attention of Lance, a dragon-type trainer who will ask for your assistance in uncovering Team Rocket's schemes in the nearby town.
8. How many different Unowns are catchable in the game?

Answer: Twenty-six

Located solely in the Ruins of Alph, Unown is a new Pokemon that only tracks as a single entity in the Pokedex, but actually appears in twenty-six unique incarnations, each of which can also be caught and tracked separately (though you only need one, really). All of the Unowns are shaped as though they're letters of the Latin alphabet, so entering the Ruins of Alph is particularly interesting to researchers in that area of Johto. You can only start encountering them, however, if you start completing the slide puzzles found in the ruin's satellite chambers, some of which are harder to reach than others.

Unown's only attack is Hidden Power.
9. Ho-Oh, one of the legendary bird Pokemon of Johto, is found atop the Tin Tower. Where is Lugia found?

Answer: Whirl Islands

Both legendary birds, called the 'Tower Duo', are found in "Gold" and "Silver" though the powers possessed by both are different in each.

Ho-Oh is the "Gold" mascot and it can be fought atop the Ecruteak City Tin Tower. Catchable at level 40, you can fight this bird if you've received the Rainbow Wing, either from the Director of the Goldenrod City Radio Tower in "Gold" or from Pewter City in "Silver".

Lugia is "Silver's" mascot, and in each game, it's found in the Whirl Islands, but only if you have the Silver Wing on you upon visiting late in the game. This item is obtained in the same way as the Rainbow Wing, but in the inverse (ie. from the Director in "Silver" and Pewter City in "Gold").
10. Which of these is not one of the three Legendary Beasts of Johto?

Answer: Celebi

Entei, Raikou, and Suicune are the three specific beasts, each representing a different elemental energy, and once they're freed from the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City, you'll be able to find them roaming around in specific routes in Johto (though very rarely). There are definitely ways to optimize your abilities to find them quicker, but the specific routes and their likelihoods of being in them are a bit arbitrary for a casual player.

Celebi is the odd one out because while a rare Legendary Pokemon, it was initially only available from different promotional events. It wasn't until "Crystal" that Celebi would be catchable in Johto, being found in Ilex Forest. You'd need a GS Ball to catch it though.
