Answer: Espeon

Espeon, along with fellow Gen 2 Eevelution Umbreon, came along with the debut of a day/night cycle. They interact with this directly. To get Espeon, the player must max the friendship out on their Eevee, wait for the morning, then level it up. With Umbreon, it's the same thing only it must now be done at night.

Answer: The Day Care Center

Breeding was a little bit primitive, but it functioned at a basic level the exact same way it would for generations to come. The idea is that the player can leave two Pokemon at the Day Care. By default, they will very slowly level up and potentially learn new moves in the process.

Certain species of Pokemon, when placed together, will eventually produce an Egg. The specific species inside the Egg is directly related to the two 'parent' Pokemon, and there are a near endless amount of combinations that will result in an Egg. In order to produce an Egg, one of the Pokemon must be male, and the other must be female. Genderless Pokemon cannot produce Eggs, nor can they be partner to one that produces an Egg.

That's the basic concept. It gets more complicated when Egg moves and, later, IVs enter the equation. To get an Egg move, the player must get the move they want onto the moveset of the male Pokemon. In later generations, the female would be able to pass down moves as well.

Answer: Tuesday

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are Bug Catching Contest days. Here, the wild spawn found in National Park changes drastically. Pokemon such as Pinsir and Scyther, who can't be found elsewhere in Johto, can be found here. As well, you can catch a version exclusive bug type here; if playing "Gold", you ordinarily cannot find the Caterpie evolution line, but you can during the Bug Catching Contest. Same idea for "Silver" and the Weedle evolution line.

Answer: It can be caught at an 'illegal' level

Electrode can be caught at level 23 in three static, scripted encounters found inside the Rocket HQ in Mahogany Town. Voltorb does not evolve until level 30, so a level 23 Electrode should not be possible. Of course, this is hardly the first and definitely wouldn't be the last time an underlevelled Pokemon would be found in this franchise.

Answer: Piloswine

Thankfully, this heinous crime does not seriously impact the battle itself. Pryce's Piloswine is level 31 which, itself is impossible as Swinub doesn't evolve until level 33. However, the real red flag here is that his Piloswine knows the move Fury Attack. Piloswine does not get Fury Attack until level 33, and Swinub cannot learn Fury Attack at all. Therefore, even with an underleveled Piloswine, it would be impossible for it to have Fury Attack in its moveset.

Hilariously, this was actually directly addressed in the remakes, "Heartgold" and "Soulsilver". Here, Pryce's Piloswine is now level 34, where it is now possible both to be an actual Piloswine, and to have Fury Attack as a move.

Fortunately, Fury Attack is an extremely weak move. Plus, if you brought Steel types to this fight because Steel trumps Ice, you already have an answer to Fury Attack since Steel resists it.

Answer: Aerodactyl

Lance's Aerodactyl knows Rock Slide in the champion match. This, on paper, seems completely okay; Aerodactyl is a Rock type and, in Gen 3 and onward, it readily got access to the move. However, it wasn't possible for Aerodactyl to learn Rock Slide in Gen 2. What's even odder about this is that his Aerodactyl also knows AncientPower, a move it had perfectly clear access to, so Game Freak didn't have to have his Aerodactyl 'cheat' just to get a Rock move. Yet, they very much did.

Answer: Red

To even be allowed to fight Red, the player must have conquered both the Johto and Kanto regions, amassing sixteen badges and defeating the Johto Elite Four. In essence, they have faced twenty 'bosses' to this point. In all of that time, they never once encountered a Pokemon higher than level 65. Then, they come to fight Red and his lead, Pikachu, is level 88, a 23 level spike!

Although this fight is unlikely to register as one of the hardest in all of franchise history, it definitely fills the shoes of a Super Boss effectively in this game.

Answer: 117

There are sixteen gym leaders, the Elite Four, five fights with the Rival, a battle against Snorlax in Kanto and a massive slew of fights with Team Rocket. There are also a portion of overworld trainers overlooking areas the player has to go through, who will lock eyes and force a battle when the player goes to them. There are 336 total possible battles, not counting wild encounters, in this game. As you can see, slightly more than 1/3rd of them are mandatory.

In "Crystal", funnily enough, there are now only 109 mandatory battles. The main boss fights remain, but there are six less Rocket Grunts and two less overworld NPCs that the player is required to defeat here.

Answer: Moon Ball

Infamously, quite a huge amount of Apricorn Balls simply don't work the way they're supposed to. The Moon Ball, for example, is supposed to have a higher catch rate against Pokemon who evolve via Moon Stone, such as Clefairy and Jigglypuff. Due to a programming error however, it only works on Pokemon who evolve with a... Burn Heal? Obviously, nothing evolves with a status-based consumable, meaning the Moon Ball is effectively just a reskinned Poke Ball.

In addition to Moon, the Fast, Love and Heavy Balls do not work the way they were intended. Of course, this was corrected in "Heartgold" and "Soulsilver", but was not addressed in "Crystal".

Answer: No

Unless you lived in Japan or happened to get your hands on a Japanese Mobile System GB in the year 2000, it is impossible to acquire all 251 Pokemon in this game. 250 of them are perfectly acquirable without needing anything fancy. It's the 251st, however, which presents a roadblock. Celebi can only be obtained through the use of the GS Ball and that associated quest. The problem is, it was only ever possible to get this item via the use of outdated, dormant mobile hardware that was localized within Japan. If you lived in the US or Canada, it was not possible to get a Celebi.

In the world of today, even people in Japan cannot get Celebi onto a copy of original "Gold" or "Silver" as the network provider, DION, is long, long gone.

As such, the only way possible to have an original copy of these games that has a legal Celebi on it, would be if you had the game way back in 2000 and just so happened to be in Japan. If that is the case, it is possible to obtain all 251 Pokemon. Otherwise, the buck stops at 250.
