Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The player takes on the role of James Sunderland, who's stumbled upon Silent Hill searching for his wife. It's believed that many of his foes are manifestations of his psyche. Which boss is said to be a direct reflection of himself?

Answer: Pyramid Head

It isn't long before James comes across Pyramid, spotting him lurking on the other side of a barrier in an early apartment complex in Eastern South Vale, but before long there are full-on battles against the being. The catch is that there are a number of allusions to the fact that Pyramid Head might actually be James, indicative of his frustration, pain, and anger. Looking closely at James' reflection in the store windows in South Vale, for instance, will show that characteristic pyramid shape.

James is in Silent Hill (South Vale) in pursuit of his late wife, Mary. While he knows she can't possibly alive, he feels compelled to see through the letter beckoning him to a place they once held dear. Naturally, that place isn't safe and he has to confront his complex grief along the way.
2. Mary Sunderland died of a terminal illness.

Answer: False

While Mary was definitely afflicted with a terminal illness and spent many of her final days in the hospital, the illness is not what killed her. As James comes to realize the deeper he proceeds through Silent Hill, he was actually responsible for her death, and his time in this otherworldly location is a consequence of his guilt and grief, the monsters being manifestations of his own psyche (for the most part).

Mary is not technically in Silent Hill-- only the warped memories of her. Everything James faces there with regards to her voice or her image or doppelgangers of her are nothing more than conjured horrors.
3. Angela, met early in the game, is in South Vale searching for who of these?

Answer: Her mother

James will first find Angela in the cemetery on the way into Silent Hill and in subsequent encounters she will dissociate more and more with reality, slowly revealing that she killed her abusive father and brother with a knife she carries with her on her journey (which she will hand over to James in a moment of panic). He'll keep running into her, even going so far as to fight her own personal demon, the Abstract Daddy, at the start of the Labyrinth.

James encounters Angela for the last time in a burning stairwell in Lakeview Hotel, admitting that she was right in that the people they were looking for were never really in Silent Hill. He offhandedly notes that it's hot, what with all the fire in the stairwell, but Angela acknowledges she sees the fire everywhere in her own personal version of the world.
4. Much of James' trip through South Vale will involve pursuing Laura from landmark to landmark. What is Laura's general demeanour towards James?

Answer: Dislike

As soon as James encounters Laura in Wood Side Apartments, it'll be clear that her teasing and seemingly-playful jokes are actually a bit more malicious, a consequence, as he discovers, of a sense that he's not good for Mary. She speaks about why she antagonizes him on a couple of occasions as he chases her through South Vale/Silent Hill.

What makes matters worse is that when he finally catches up to her in Brookhaven Hospital, she locks him into a room with a monster, the Flesh Lip, before running off again.

When James finally reunites with Laura at Lakeview Hotel, she'll claim that he's had enough of her pranks and they should work together to find Mary. She'll hand over a letter that Mary wrote to her, handed over from their nurse, Rachel, but when she gives over one written for James, they'll both discover that the envelope is empty. Interestingly, Laura will claim to have just turned eight years old, implying (at least from Mary's letter) that Mary must still be alive. She's not.
5. Encountered in the Wood Side Apartments and Toulca Prison's cafeteria, James will eventually fight what recurring figure?

Answer: Eddie

Eddie Dombrowski seems ill-suited for South Vale from the jump. James first encounters this individual in Apartment 116 of the Wood Side Apartments, finding him there throwing up into the bathroom toilet, yelling that he didn't kill anyone. The problem, as it unfolds, is that he absolutely did, and it's because of this that the town brought him in.

James will encounter Eddie again at the Reverie Theater and in Toluca Prison, but they'll face off against one another at the end of the Labyrinth, engaging in a gunfight amidst the flanks of beef in a meat packing facility on the edge of Toluca Lake. James ultimately has to win this battle out to keep moving.
6. Throughout Silent Hill, James repeatedly encounters a woman named Maria. He first encounters her in which location, initially believed to be Mary's 'special place'?

Answer: Rosewater Park

Maria is a mysterious woman since she looks similar to Mary, but can't possibly be her. James acknowledges this repeatedly, and it's clear that Maria leans into this notion, egging James on to make choices due tot he sway she has. He'll find her at Rosewater Park, but she'll follow him all the way to Brookhaven Hospital before she meets an untimely end to Pyramid Head.

But that's not the end of Maria; James will encounter her again, alive and well, in the Labyrinth and in the corridors behind Lakeview Hotel, both times meeting similar, devastating fates.

The truth is that whatever Maria is, she's a manifestation of James' mind. She manages to be the form taken on by 'Her', the game's final boss, and it's possible that she'll either be done away with by the time James concludes his journey or she'll depart the nightmare with him depending on the choices he's made.
7. Amy and Ernest were the residents of what Silent Hill/South Vale location, found to be inaccessible to James upon his visit?

Answer: The Baldwin Mansion

Amy and Ernest aren't explored all too much in "Silent Hill 2" though James and Maria can come across their mansion in Western South Vale while they pass through this part of town together. James can head right up to the door, but Maria will stay outside the gate, never crossing the threshold.

The reason for this is explained in the earlier versions of "Silent Hill 2", specifically in the 'Born from a Wish' scenario, which explored the lives of the characters here as they related to Maria and jumpstarted her inevitable meeting with James. It's why, in the remake, she notes that she has a striking familiarity with the building but seems too afraid to get close.
8. Jennifer Carroll, whose statue is found in Rosewater Park, was considered which of these by the locals?

Answer: A saint

James never encounters Jennifer Carroll in person because she's long since passed, but her story hints at the greater religious complications that plague the town of South Vale and its history with certain sects that have led Silent Hill to take root. She was killed, and martyred, by the Christians of Silent Hill, even if locals didn't take well to the truth behind this.

James will visit her statue explicitly to hunt down a key buried in front of it, allowing him to gain access to the Historical Society building in Western South Vale. He'll also encounter Angela there.
9. Serial killer Walter Sullivan is referenced in newspaper articles that James finds in the Wood Side Apartments. Is he encountered in "Silent Hill 2"?

Answer: No

Walter Sullivan may be important to the long-term lore of the "Silent Hill" series, but his appearance this game is nothing more than a whisper. According to newspaper in Wood Side Apartments, Walter Sullivan took his own life in prison. The culprit of local homicide, he was at one time a notorious figure in South Vale.

He becomes a much more important character in "Silent Hill 4: The Room", in which he's not only elaborated on, but he acts as the principal antagonist. Signifying him in "Silent Hill 2" should give a bit of an indication that the people who end up in Silent Hill aren't all that great.
10. Should you encounter Mira during your game, you would be keen to notice that they are actually...what?

Answer: A dog

Mira appears more, perhaps, than any other character in the "Silent Hill" series, only showing up if you manage to make your way through the game to unlock one of the joke endings that appears. In "Silent Hill 2", she appears in the 'Dog' ending, a consequence of picking up certain items in the game and engaging with them in the right order in Lakeview Hotel at the end of the game. Mira, a shiba inu, will appear behind a computer, proving to be responsible for all of the events in "Silent Hill 2".

Naturally, it's just as thematically rewarding as the 'UFO' ending (aliens did it!), and in a game with eight different possible endings, it's a treat for completionists.
