Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colt M1911

Answer: Pistols

The M1911 was one of five different pistols. Statistically, it deals the least amount of damage and attempts to make up for this with the largest clip size and lowest recoil. This gun is far, far better in Multiplayer than it is Zombies. In Zombies, it is the pistol players start the game with, and it is deliberately made to be very, very weak as a result.
2. Tokarev TT-33

Answer: Pistols

The Tokarev TT-33 is one of five different pistols in the game. Statistically, this pistols features the lowest effective range of its peers, but has the highest rate of fire in exchange. This pistol did not make it into the Zombies mode, and was instead in the Multiplayer.
3. Walter P38

Answer: Pistols

The Walter P38 is one of five different pistols in the game. That said, it is statistically the exact same thing as the Tokarev TT-33 and the Nambu. The only actual difference between these three pistols is their country of origin, which was very relevant in a game based on World War II.
4. Nambu

Answer: Pistols

The Nambu is one of five different pistols. Unfortunately, for those who only care for gameplay performance, there is zero difference whatsoever between this, the Tokarev TT-33 and the Walther P38. This is likely due to one of two different reasons: either Activision wanted to encourage players to instead choose pistols based on whatever team they were fighting on for roleplay purposes, or they simply lacked the developmental means to make these pistols meaningfully different.
5. .357 Magnum

Answer: Pistols

The .357 Magnum is the only revolver in this game. It is by far and away stronger in terms of bullet damage compared to the other four pistols. Of course, its drawbacks are equally straightforward: as a revolver, it is limited by a six round cylinder. Its fire rate is also very bad, by far the worst of the Pistol category.

This gun, like the M1911, is usable in the Zombies mode. It is here where the .357 Magnum truly shines, as bullet damage is of much greater importance in this mode than Multiplayer. As well, the player can purchase perks such as Double Tap or Speed Cola to enhance the Magnum's speed.
6. Thompson

Answer: Submachine Guns

The good ol' Tommy Gun is right at home in this game, both aesthetically and mechanically. Compared to the other three SMGs in this game, this competes very closely with the Type 100 for bullet damage, and the PPSh-41 for fire rate. It beats them both with its speedy reload and, funnily enough, its bullet penetration as well.

The Thompson is a very convenient pick for players, both in Multiplayer and Zombies. In the former, this weapon is one of few the player starts with and doesn't have to unlock. For the latter, similarly, it is a wall buy weapon, offering a reliable choice to players who have been burned one too many times at the Mystery Box.
7. MP40

Answer: Submachine Guns

The MP40 has been a long time iconic weapon through "Call of Duty" history. This game was arguably its most noteworthy performance. It absolutely destroys the other SMGs in bullet damage even with a comparatively trailing fire rate. Its accuracy for an SMG is only rivaled by the PPSh-41 which, when combined with its excellent damage, makes the MP40 into a laser machine, capable of gunning people down almost immediately.

This gun made a name for itself in Multiplayer. In fact, many would argue it was the single best weapon, period, in all of Multiplayer. In Zombies, it was a little bit of a late bloomer. It was a very average weapon in the first three Zombies maps, but it finally came alive in the final DLC map, Der Riese. Here, it is a wall buy weapon, and this was also the map which debuted Pack-a-Punch. As such, the MP40 was a very sturdy choice on this map.
8. Type 100

Answer: Submachine Guns

The Type 100 is another excellent choice for an SMG in both Multiplayer and Zombies. This thing has excellent all around performance, with no particularly serious deficiencies. It has good bullet damage, the accuracy is pristine, the fire rate is manageable and the reload speed is quite good. This weapon is a great choice for newer players, as it has very little visual recoil and is easy to control.

Like the MP40 and Tommy Gun, the Type 100 punched a clock full time in this game between Multiplayer and Zombies. As previously mentioned, this was a great weapon for players new to Multiplayer due to being very easy to handle. In Zombies, its high bullet damage makes it very capable. Like the MP40, the Type 100 became a wall buy weapon on Der Riese. Here however, the Type 100 is arguably the superior choice to the MP40 for the simple reason of possessing better all-around traits for the setting. Both are quite fantastic though, and the player could optionally choose both for their two weapon slots if they wanted.
9. PPSh-41

Answer: Submachine Guns

Although the MP40 has been in more Zombies maps, the PPSh-41 has constantly been the center of SMG attention over the years when it has appeared. This brilliant Russian SMG is an absolute unit in both Multiplayer and Zombies. It has an absolutely bonkers fire rate, yet manages to be remarkably accurate and have acceptable damage. It does feature a slightly unwieldy reload speed, but not to any sort of remotely crippling extent.

In Multiplayer, the PPSh-41 wasn't quite up to par with the MP40, and it was a bit harder to wield than the Type 100, but it was still perfectly competitive. In Zombies, especially Der Riese, the PPSh-41 took command of the entirety of the bullet meta in general, vastly outperforming its SMG peers. This weapon, more than any other, took advantage of the debuting Pack-a-Punch machine to become a force of nature.
10. M1 Garand

Answer: Rifles

This real world and video game all-time classic was one of a few different semi automatic rifles. The one interesting quirk about the M1 Garand here is that it is not depicted in a historically accurate way. It is possible to reload the M1 Garand without emptying its full magazine in this game, which is simply mechanically impossible in real life. This was almost certainly done due to game balance, as a historically accurate M1 Garand would have no doubt been the worst rifle in the entire game in both Multiplayer and Zombies.

In Multiplayer, the M1 Garand is rightfully massively compared to the M1A1 Carbine, SVT-40 and Gewehr 43. The Garand's advantage is, if you do actually empty its entire magazine, the reload speed is basically non existent. The M1 Garand can also take on an underbarrel grenade launcher, though it's not very strong in Multiplayer sadly.

In Zombies, the M1 Garand is a wall buy weapon in the Verruckt and Shi No Numa. It is not a weapon intended to last for the long haul, merely a stop gap weapon for the early rounds to tide the player over until they can get something better. In Der Riese, this weapon had a very interesting time. It was no longer a wall buy weapon, so ammunition was not readily available. However, this is where the underbarrel grenade launcher came in clutch to save the day. The M1 Garand, when Pack-a-Punched, becomes the M1000 Garand, and the underbarelled launcher becomes The Imploder. Sadly, the M1000 itself is pretty terrible, but The Imploder is absolutely monstrous. This is, functionally, a fully automatic grenade launcher. 40 Grenades are given to the weapon for use, which isn't a whole ton, but it's enough to punch through a good handful of late game zombie hordes.
11. M1A1 Carbine

Answer: Rifles

The M1A1 Carbine was another semi automatic rifle. Statistically, this thing is basically the exact same as the Gewehr 43, even with the exact same reload speed. Just like with the pistols, the reason these two rifles exist despite being statistically the same probably has to do with the M1A1 being an American rifle and the Gewehr 43 being German. In a World War II-themed game, this is very relevant.

In Multiplayer, the M1A1 Carbine is nothing particularly special, but it's also not useless either with very average all around performance.

In Zombies, this is a wall buy weapon on all four maps. Like the M1 Garand, it is not intended to be a late game weapon, instead bridging the gap between the starting pistol and the actual late game weapons the player will want. Like the M1 Garand, things get interesting when Pack-a-Punch is involved. The M1A1 Carbine, absurdly, becomes fully automatic when PaPed. Sadly, it does not gain extended clip sizes, so the player will end up reloading a lot if they use it its intended way. The damage is also nothing amazing either so, despite the quirkiness and novelty of a semi auto turned full auto, the M1A1 Carbine is not the greatest choice for a high round push.
12. Gewehr 43

Answer: Rifles

That's pronounced "Guh-vair" and not "Gew-ear" or anything remotely close to English phonetic, as this is a German rifle.

In Multiplayer, there is very little to no real difference between using this over the M1A1 Carbine. In Zombies, the Gewehr 43 suffers a fate worse than its contemporaries: it is bland and not the absolute best either. The M1A1 Carbine, when Pack-a-Punched, becomes fully automatic, so even if it isn't the most effective, it's pretty funny to use. The Gewhr 43, unlike the M1A1 or the M1 Garand, gains nothing new when PaPed. It becomes the G115 Resonator, receiving a simple flat damage bonus and nothing else. Said damage bonus isn't that great either, leaving it a genuinely mediocre choice overall.
13. STG-44

Answer: Rifles

This is, funnily enough, the only fully automatic rifle in the game. "World at War" stands out for being the only game in all of "Call of Duty" to feature merely one fully automatic rifle.

In both Multiplayer and Zombies, the STG-44 is a force to be reckoned with. It is surprisingly stable for such a small fully automatic weapon and deals excellent bullet damage due to being a rifle.

In Zombies, this weapon is a fairly decent choice in the first three maps. But then, in Der Riese, it turns into an absolute titan. Not only is its performance in general pretty great, but it also has an extremely convenient wall buy location that makes it very easy to get ammunition for. The only weapon on Der Riese specifically more recognizable than the STG-44 would be the PPSh-41.
14. M1903 Springfield

Answer: Sniper Rifles

This rifle is well known for being wickedly horrible and unusable in this game in its entirety. It is very possible for snipers to succeed in this game, unless your name is "M1903 Springfield".

The Springfield is awful simply because it is very, very slow and does not feature anywhere near enough damage to compensate. In Multiplayer, it is directly outclassed by both the Mosin-Nagant and Kar98K. If you were trying to cosplay an American soldier and wanted to use the Springfield to maintain the cosplay, the PTRS-41 has the Springfield beat in this regard too, badly at that.

In Zombies, it somehow gets even worse. This is a wall buy weapon on Verruckt, and was available out of the Mystery Box on Nacht der Untoten. It's no wonder it was silently removed from Zombies after the second map, as this weapon is absurdly weak in Zombies. A bolt action rifle that cannot guarantee a one shot on literally round 1 is so unbelievably pathetic that I struggle to put into proper words how bad that is.
15. Mosin-Nagant

Answer: Sniper Rifles

This is a beast of a rifle, a sleeper pick at that. It features the second best damage of its class, and it handles far more effectively than the PTRS-41, which boasts the raw power advantage.

Sadly, this gun did not appear in Zombies at all. It would have probably been at least pretty usable if it did.
16. Arisaka

Answer: Sniper Rifles

The Arisaka is largely a copy/paste of the Kar98K, both in Multiplayer and in Zombies. It only differentiates from the Kar98K in that it is a Japanese rifle, whereas the Kar98K is German. In a World War II themed game, this is relevant.

The Arisaka appears out of the Mystery Box in Nacht der Untoten and is a wall buy weapon on Shi No Numa, after it took a vacation entirely in the second map, Verruckt. Appearing on Shi No Numa instead of the Kar98K or Springfield actually makes perfect thematic sense, as Shi No Numa is based in Japan.
17. Kar98K

Answer: Sniper Rifles

Easily the most iconic, recognizable Sniper Rifle in the game, the Kar98K would go on to appear in numerous other future "Call of Duty" entries. That said, its actual practical performance in this game is fairly mediocre.

In Multiplayer, the Kar98K is fairly heavily outclassed by the Mosin-Nagant. It comes up short in damage output and has nothing to leverage over the Mosin-Nagant. It is still usable on its own, especially if you wanted to roleplay being a German soldier (for however frowned upon idolizing Nazis would be...) then this would be the rifle of choice, as the Mosin-Nagant is a Russian firearm.

In Zombies, the Kar98K is a wall buy on every map except Shi No Numa. It is the cheapest wall weapon in the entire game as well as all of Zombies history, being available for a mere 200 points. Clearly then, it should not be surprising that it is, at best, a stop gap weapon meant to tide the player over until they can get something good. That said, even in doing this, the player had better hurry, as the Kar98K stops being one-shot capable by round 4.

Unfortunately, like the Gewehr 43, Der Riese's Pack-a-Punch can't really save the Kar98K. Even with a flashy new name as the Armageddon, it simply doesn't output great damage and is fairly clunky and slow to use.
18. PTRS-41

Answer: Sniper Rifles

This is an absolute beast of a sniper rifle. In real life, the PTRS-41 was designed to be an Anti-Tank rifle, and its 12.7MM bullets aren't just for show whatsoever.

Sadly, the rifle does not have any sort of advantage in taking out a tank in Multiplayer, which somewhat defies its real world use. Even still, it embarrasses the other Sniper Rifles in raw damage, and will reliably one shot to the chest and up.

In Zombies, this weapon is available out of the Mystery Box on all four maps. In Der Riese, this thing really takes advantage of Pack-a-Punch. So much so that it can one shot a zombie as high as round 55! This makes it absolutely incredible for co-op play, though its very slow reload speed and abysmal mobility while wielding it makes it treacherous, albeit highly potent, for a solo player.
19. BAR

Answer: Light Machine Guns

The BAR, unfortunately, features the lowest fire rate by a country mile of its LMG brethren. It attempts to make up for this by being tied for the lightest LMG in the game.

In Multiplayer, the BAR is theoretically useful at mid range. However, taking a BAR to fight someone who is using an MP40 or PPSh-41 may as well be taking a plastic knife into a gun fight, as these weapons dominated the game's meta at this range. The BAR's fire rate is simply too poor to compete.

In Zombies, the BAR is a lot better since having a low fire rate isn't the end of the world here. The BAR does feature acceptable base damage output, so you could certainly end up with a worse weapon. Unfortunately, for some reason, while it is consistently a wall buy, it costs an outrageous 1800 points to purchase, while the Thompson costs 1200, the STG-44 1300 and the MP40 and Type 100 cost 1000 each. As such, there is scarcely a reason to actually go out of one's way to obtain the BAR in either Multiplayer or Zombies.
20. FG42

Answer: Light Machine Guns

The FG42 is tied for the lightest LMG in the game with the BAR. The FG42 features a way, way, way higher fire rate, but its stability and visual recoil are unfortunately horrendous. So much so that it is virtually unusable outside of a mid range, where users will likely get lit up by someone wielding an MP40 or PPSh-41.

Another secret tragedy to the FG42 is that, for some reason, this thing features pitiful head shot damage, the worst out of any fully automatic weapon in this game. This is really bad in Multiplayer, but it's an even worse detriment in Zombies.
21. Browning M1919

Answer: Light Machine Guns

The Browning M1919 takes the BAR's sturdy accuracy, the FG42's fire rate, and the PTRS-41's horrendous mobility. That is to say, it is a pretty solid weapon that has very clear deficiencies.

In Multiplayer, this weapon can uniquely be mounted atop a flat surface, enhancing its accuracy. Sadly, its damage output is pretty poor, so using this thing at a mid range is just asking to get blown up by someone with a PPSh-41 or MP40. Thankfully, it is stable enough to be competent from farther away, where it can compete with these SMGs much more favorably.

In Zombies, the M1919 Browning is lauded for having tons and tons of ammunition. Despite never being a wall buy and being a Mystery Box weapon in all four maps, ammo tends to be less of a problem for it than actual wall buy weapons. However, its horrendous reload speed and mobility do significantly hinder its performance, especially with its lacking damage output.
22. MG42

Answer: Light Machine Guns

The MG42, compared to the Browning M1919, is an all around upgrade. The Browning M1919 isn't a bad weapon by any means, but the MG42 is just terrific. It outclasses the former in fire rate, damage output, and vastly beats it in reload speed while only taking a slight step back in stability. Like the Browning M1919, the MG42 can be mounted on a flat surface. However, it does require a Bipod attachment to do this, whereas the Browning can just do it innately. This isn't really too useful though, so it's hardly a setback.

In Zombies, funnily enough, the MG42 actually comes with the aforementioned Bipod attachment on all but the Der Riese map. This is even funnier when you realize that there is no mount function in Zombies, making the Bipod entirely useless. In Zombies, the MG42 now entirely outclasses the Browning M1919 since stability isn't much of an issue in Zombies, given that the undead seldom ever try to dodge attacks in this mode.
23. M1897 Trench Gun

Answer: Shotguns

The M1897 Trench Gun, sadly, is complete and utter garbage in this game as a whole. Treyarch and Activision would go on to make many, many great and even elite pump action shotguns. Sadly, the M1897 Trench Gun had to walk so they could all run and fly.

In Multiplayer, this thing sucks. It is a pump action shotgun, so it is both very slow and has pitiful range. The catch is supposed to be extreme lethality in close quarters, and the M1897 Trench Gun cannot even deliver that reliably. It is very difficult to one shot someone in Multiplayer with this, and if you don't one shot them, you are as good as gone. In that case, why not simply use your melee knife? The knife is a guaranteed one shot and essentially functions in the same close quarters of the M1897 Trench Gun. When your primary weapon cannot even beat the melee weapon everyone gets by default, you know you messed up in the Create a Class menu.

The M1897 Trench Gun is only slightly less pathetic in Zombies. There is no point whatsoever using it over the Double Barrelled Shotgun as, on top of simply being stronger, the Double Barrelled Shotgun costs less points (1200) than the Trench Gun (1500) to purchase for some absurd reason.

Not even Der Riese's Pack-a-Punch can save this thing. When PaPed, it becomes the Gut Shot. And though it reloads a lot faster, the damage improvement is fairly small, and this weapon will stop one-shotting at a pathetic round 16. Just for reference, a non-PaPed Double Barreled Shotgun will one shot reliably until round 15, and PaP makes this a comfortable round 26, while the gun itself is not pump action and can fire much faster than the Trench Gun.
24. Double Barreled Shotgun

Answer: Shotguns

You're welcome for the freebie!

The Double Barrelled Shotgun was one of two shotguns in this game. Thankfully for it, the M1897 Trench Gun was awful in every way, so practically by default, the Double Barrelled Shotgun became the best shotgun in the game. That said, in Multiplayer, it's still pretty mediocre. Like the Trench Gun, it struggles to land a reliable one shot kill in the close quarters it's supposed to dominate. However, at least it's not pump action, so the player can quickly fire a second shot if their first does not kill. Of course, being Double Barrelled and mandating a reload every two shots, if that second shot misses or fails to finish the job, you're as good as gone.

In Zombies thankfully, this weapon is a lot better. The lethality of it being a Double Barrelled Shotgun plays well into a mode favoring raw power. Of course, having to reload every two shots is a significant detriment and makes this gun almost impossible to camp effectively with, encouraging the player to a more fast paced playstyle that makes the gun itself have a deceptive skill curve.
