Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Swansea

Swansea, or Abertawe in Welsh, is Wales' second largest city by population and the principal railway station for the city is the usual origin* for services from the west of Wales to London. For those who wish to escape the urban jungle, Swansea railway station is the gateway to the beautiful coast and countryside of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, with termini at Pembroke Dock (via Tenby), Fishguard Harbour and Milford Haven.

* Depending on political whim and railway competition, Carmarthen also acts as an origin for direct services to London from the west of Wales.
2. Neath

Neath railway station is just a short ten-minute train ride from Swansea via the minor stations of Llansamlet and Skewen (birthplace of global superstar, Bonnie Tyler). The station is conveniently located next to the town centre - not a given for the British railway network - with services typically taking approximately forty minutes to arrive at the heart of the Welsh capital, Cardiff.
3. Port Talbot Parkway

Port Talbot Parkway is the main railway station serving the steel town of Port Talbot. The town's industrial heritage is very much celebrated in the design and architecture of the station building, a nod to the imposing steelworks that has been the lifeblood of the town for decades. The home town of acclaimed actor Sir Anthony Hopkins is also served by a lesser-used station in Baglan.
4. Bridgend

Bridgend railway station is at the point where three different lines meet. Passengers onboard services from Swansea to London Paddington can continue on their merry way along the South Wales Main Line to Cardiff and beyond or they can change at Bridgend for either the branch line to Maesteg or Vale of Glamorgan Line to Llantwit Major, Rhoose Cardiff International Airport (longest non-contrived station name in the UK) and Barry (yes, the one from 'Gavin and Stacey'). Passengers can carry on travelling along the Vale of Glamorgan (VoG) line beyond Barry to Cardiff Central; it would be a much longer affair than taking the direct South Wales Main Line but it is - in parts - much more scenic.
5. Cardiff Central

Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, has a large number of railway stations within its bounds but it is the principal station, Cardiff Central, that is the place to be to board services to London Paddington. The station is known for its impressive art deco lobby and its proximity to the Principality Stadium, the home of Welsh rugby.

Other stations in the city include Cardiff Queen Street (the hub for Valley Line services to Treherbert, Aberdare, Rhymney and Merthyr Tydfil), Cardiff Bay (of 'Doctor Who' fame) and Llandaff (known for its cathedral).
6. Newport

Newport, it's a state of mind! Newport railway station is the last main station call in Wales for Swansea to Paddington services. Upon departure from Newport, passengers are transported across the border into England via the impressive - though leaky - Severn Tunnel. Newport is a well connected station, with services to destinations such as Gloucester, Birmingham, Derby, Nottingham, Hereford, Shrewsbury, Chester and Manchester amongst others.
7. Bristol Parkway

Bristol Parkway isn't located in the most exciting of places - it is not what one would call a "go-to" destination - but its proximity to the M4, M5 and M32 motorways makes it a relatively good spot for a station that has the primary purpose of getting motorists out of their vehicles to complete their journeys into Bristol, Birmingham and London by train. Bristol Parkway is the original "parkway" station and it is a key interchange for the South Wales/Great Western and Cross Country routes.
8. Swindon

Swindon is at the heart of the Great Western Railway network with Paddington-bound trains arriving into the station from across South Wales and the West of England via Stroud, Bristol Parkway and Chippenham. As a result of its centrality, Swindon benefits from a high frequency of services to and from London Paddington but it suffers from being just far enough away from London to attract "long distance" fares.

The Swindon - Didcot Parkway - Reading rail corridor, the core of the Great Western Main Line, has long been notorious for some of the highest per mile ticket prices in the United Kingdom and is frequently cited in arguments for ticketing and fares reform.
9. Reading

Reading is a busy interchange situated to the west of London and, since the inception of the Elizabeth Line in 2022, the station has featured on Transport for London (TfL) maps. There are many stations between Reading and London but long distance services from locations such as Swansea rarely stop at them.

Most services from Swansea to Paddington do not call at Didcot Parkway; this makes travelling to Oxford slightly more awkward but provides the majority of passengers with faster journey times to Reading and London.
10. London Paddington

Paddington is the major London terminus for Great Western Railway services. In the final stretch of a journey from Swansea, passengers see stations such as Slough, Hayes & Harlington and Ealing Broadway pass by at 125 miles per hour. As Acton Main Line disappears into the distance, the scrum to gather up luggage begins ready for the mass exodus at journey's end - Paddington.

With the Elizabeth Line fully operational, Paddington has become one of the busiest stations in the country.
