Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Canadian city plays host to the Canadian Garlic Festival?

Answer: Sudbury, Ontario

Started as a way to offset running cost for the Ukraine Senior's Center, the Garlic Festival has become a yearly event in Sudbury.

Run by volunteers, the festival started in 1992, and begins with the "Great Garlic Walk" in Senator Hnatyshyn Park. The fourth weekend in August was chosen to accommodate the garlic growing season.

During the 1994 festival, a record breaking garlic braid was created, measuring in length 78 feet and 4 inches.

2. Where in England will you find a yearly festival devoted to the music of Glenn Miller?

Answer: Clapham, Bedfordshire

Miller was based at RAF Twinwood Farm, an airfield on the western outskirts of the village of Clapham, next to Bedford. In 1944, he got on a plane from Twinwood and disappeared.

After WWII ended, the airfield was closed and the control tower fell into disrepair, but restoration work began in 2001. In 2002, when the work was completed, a Glenn Miller concert was held to celebrate the completion of the restoration, and has been held every August since then.

The tower is now a Glenn Miller museum.

3. The people of Oberammergau in Germany have performed a Passion Play every 10 years since 1634, because they believed that it would protect them from disaster. What was the disaster that prompted the first performance?

Answer: Bubonic plague

The Black Plague had come to Oberammergau, and had killed 15,000 residents of nearby Munich in 1634 - 1635 alone. The people of Oberammergau were frightened, and vowed that they would present the story of Christ to the world every 10 years for ever, if their village was spared. The village was spared, and the people have kept their word ever since.

Two thousand people are involved in the play, which runs for six hours, in front of an audience of nearly 5,000. Performers must be Oberammergau natives, or have lived there for at least ten years. The first play was in 1634, on a stage put up in the cemetery above fresh graves of plague victims, and the 40th was in 2000.

Feelings run so high that some of the men who have played Judas suffer abuse, attacks, and death threats.

4. Why was the Australian Day of Mourning instituted?

Answer: Support for Aboriginal people

Life for the Aboriginal people in Australia was difficult: they were living on reserves, without political rights or citizenship, and were not allowed to travel without permission. It had become worse as a result of the Depression, when they were at the back of the queue for jobs, pay and food.

The Day of Mourning was declared on 26th January 1938, which was Australia Day, and also the 150th anniversary of white settlement. The Australian Aborigines League and the Aborigines Progressive Association marched peacefully together to Australia House, in the hope of publicising their plight and improving their rights.

In 1955, the day was made a National Day and the date was changed to the first Sunday in July.

5. During the Napoleonic Wars, citizens of a town in the North East of England hanged what they thought was a French spy, but wasn't. To this day residents of which coastal town are known as "Monkey Hangers"?

Answer: Hartlepool

It is thought that the "spy" rather than being an actual monkey, may have been a small boy or "powder monkey" although whether this makes his hanging better or worse is debatable!

The Hartlepool monkey made headlines when the townspeople elected H'Angus (aka Stuart Drummond), the mascot of the town's football (soccer) team, to be their Mayor in 2002 and again in 2005.

6. The 'Otto Grunski Polski Festyn' was started in 1973 in Menasha, Wisconsin, to honour a local man. According to the local legend, what did Otto invent to warrant the festival in his name?

Answer: Bicycle

Legend has it that Otto was born in 1461, and that he has been seen at every festival since!

The Otto Grunski Festival was started as an excuse to have a community party, and over the years there have been bed races, soccer tourneys and a bicycle race that attracts cyclists from around the nation.

7. Every four years, a competition open only to married couples is held In the English county of Essex. Can you say what they have to do to win the competition, and what the prize is?

Answer: For convincing the judges that they are happy to be married to each other, a side of bacon.

The competition is the Dunmow Flitch Trials, held in Great Dunmow, in Essex. The prize of a "flitch" (a side) of bacon is awarded to married couples from anywhere in the world, if they can "satisfy the Judge and Jury of 6 maidens and 6 bachelors that in ' twelvemonth and a day' they have 'not wisht themselves unmarried again'." The latest winners (July 2008) are one couple from each of three different counties in England, and one couple from Tennessee.

The Trials are about 900 years old, and are mentioned by William Langland in his 1362 book The Vision of Piers Plowman, and by Geoffrey Chaucer in The Wife of Bath's Tale.
