Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The franc is a currency name that originated in medieval France, first introduced in the 14th century during the reign of King John II. Over time, the franc became a symbol of monetary stability and spread beyond Europe, especially to Africa, where it was adopted through colonial systems and later through regional currency unions. Today, versions of the franc are mainly used in Switzerland and across parts of Central and West Africa.
France used the French franc for centuries before replacing it with the euro in 2002, marking one of the most significant currency changes in its history. Belgium and Luxembourg also used the franc, and for many years their currencies were so closely linked that banknotes could circulate across borders. Switzerland continues to use the Swiss franc today, which is often seen as a "safe-haven" currency during global financial uncertainty. Monaco used its own franc, officially issued but tied in value to the French franc, showing how small states managed monetary independence.
Andorra is unusual because it never issued its own franc but accepted both the French franc and Spanish peseta in daily use. In Africa, Rwanda uses the Rwandan franc, introduced after independence to replace colonial money. Burundi followed a similar path with the Burundian franc. The Democratic Republic of the Congo uses the Congolese franc, which replaced earlier currencies after a major reform in the 1960s. Senegal, Mali, and Ivory Coast all use the West African CFA franc, part of a shared system that allows easy trade between member countries and uses a fixed exchange rate.
The remaining countries listed follow very different currency traditions. Italy replaced the lira with the euro, Japan uses the yen, Brazil uses the real, and India uses the rupee. Angola uses the kwanza, while the Philippines uses the peso. None of these countries have ever used the franc.
