Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Correct answers:
Un abricot = apricot. une amande = almond. une banana is of course a banana.
Une cerise is a cherry. Un coing is a quince which may not be familiar to some of you but is one of the most ancient fruits. I have a tree but it's hard to get enough fruit to make jam. The French make a candied version though.
Une datte is a date, not to be confused with date as in meeting.
Une figue is a fig.
Une fraise is a strawberry. Une framboise is a raspberry.
Un kiwi is of course a kiwi. They were very popular during my many years there and the patisseries began using them as a garnish on cakes.
Un kaki may have tripped you up but it is the persimmon's name. You either like these or you don't. We have trees here and had trees in France. We would take them to the older people who really liked them.
Une mangue is of course the mango.
Une myrtille is a blueberry or a bilberry. The ones I ate in France were the wild kind that we picked. I never saw the gigantic ones you find here in the USA but perhaps tastes have changed.
Une nectarine is obviously a nectarine, but another term is used for certain varieties and that is un brugnon.
Une orange is an orange.
Une poire is a pear.
Une prune is a plum and "pruneau" is a prune and if you want a tongue twister, try this, "pruneaux cuits pruneaux crus" I once met a child named Prune just when the easing up of names was happening and often wondered what life would be like for her in English speaking countries. Prior to this time you could not name a child for a fruit.
Un raisin is a grape, un raisin sec is a raisin because sec means dry. Une grappe de raisins is a bunch of grapes by the way.

Incorrect answers:
Un agneau is a lamb.
Un chou is a cabbage and yes, the French do occasionally use it as a term of affection or to say something is cute.
Une cheville is an ankle.
Une date is a date.
Une grenouille is a frog.
Un haricot is a bean.
Un poireau is a leek.
Un singe is a monkey and a navet is a turnip.
Un radis is a radish.
