Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maddogrick loves the mountains so he's lucky that he only lives an hour's drive from the Canadian Rockies. It's there that he can visit one of the most beautiful and famous lakes on the planet. Which one is it?

Answer: Lake Louise

Lake Louise is magnificent and world-renowned for its natural beauty. However, one website dealing with the lakes, "Activity Bookers Travel Blog article, Top 5 Most Beautiful Lakes in the Rockies", thinks another mountain tarn is even prettier! Check it out.

Better still, come and see for yourself. You won't regret it.
2. Mommakat has always been fascinated with shells, and so decided to take a trip north in Western Australia to view an outstanding display of seashells. Where was she headed?

Answer: Beagle Bay

Beagle Bay Mission is famous for the extensive use of seashells decorating the small mission church there. They have been used both on the exterior and the interior of the church and the effect is exquisite.
3. One of Canada's national parks is located just 15 minutes from LadyC's home in Ottawa, Ontario. Gatineau Park (Parc de la Gatineau) is a popular tourist destination in Canada's National Capital Region, especially in the autumn with the panoramic views of the Ottawa Valley to be seen from the Eardley Escarpment. Another attraction of the park is a meromictic lake that has an unusual colour due to the large amounts of algae that can be found in the water. What is the name of this unusual lake?

Answer: Pink Lake

Pink Lake, named for the Pink family who owned land in the area, has a surface that appears from bright to deep green. Unlike an 'ordinary' (holomictic) lake, whose surface and deep layers mix at least once seasonally, a meromictic lake's layers do not intermix. Because the water at the bottom of the lake is not oxygenated, only one organism lives there: a prehistoric anaerobic bacterium that uses sulphur, rather than oxygen, during photosynthesis. Due to the fragility of the lake's ecosystem, tourists are asked keep to the boardwalks around the lake and to refrain from activities--like swimming or skipping stones--that could disturb the lake's surface and deep layers.

Gatineau Park has no dearth of activities for visitors! Boating, cycling, hiking and guided tours are available, and in the winter one can also go skiing and snowshoeing.
4. Wulfsbane decided to take vacation to one of America's most celebrated national parks. This park contains places named "Beehive Geyser", "Grand Prismatic Spring" and "Old Faithful". What is the name of this wondrous place?

Answer: Yellowstone National Park

In addition to the gorgeous scenery, in Yellowstone Park animals such as the gray wolf, grizzly bear, elk and bison roam freely.
5. Chris is longing for some time by the sea. He might visit the only crater lake in Korea or enjoy some golf. Then again, he might learn some fishing tips from the "sea women" who are famous for their diving and fishing. To which island off the south coast of the Korean peninsula is Chris headed?

Answer: Jeju Island

Yes, Chris is headed for JejuDo (in Korean) or Jeju Island. It is well known for romantic vacations, exquisite golf resorts, volcanic caves, beautiful beaches and many other natural wonders. Chris isn't particularly interested in going to Dokdo, which is also claimed to be a territory of Japan. It's too bleak and rocky. Silmi Island is another rather bleak place, but holds a place in history. A relatively famous Korean film ('Silmido') recognizes the island, but otherwise, it's not the best place to catch a wave.

6. Wulfsbane lives about 80 kilometers from a lake system that holds one-fifth of the world's fresh surface water. Name this lake system.

Answer: The Great Lakes

The Great Lakes contain over 22,000 cubic kilometers of fresh water. I will give you some idea of how much this is: if you spread this amount of water over the continental United States, it would cover the land in almost three meters of water.
7. Ozzz2002 went for a drive up the Blue Mountains, just west of Sydney, Australia, to see a famous rock formation in the pretty township of Katoomba. What is the name of this must-see attraction that rises over 900 meters above the valley floor?

Answer: Three Sisters

The three peaks are called Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo and were named after an Aboriginal legend. Their community and their neighbours were bitter rivals, but in true 'Romeo and Juliet' fashion, the sisters fell in love with three brothers from the enemy mob. When their love could not be, they were turned into stone.

Katoomba is only 100 kilometers west of Sydney, in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Rock formations, waterfalls, native flora and fauna and some spectacular views make the area extremely popular with tourists.

Uluru is in central Australia, almost 3,000 kilometers from Sydney and the Warrumbungles are a mountain range in the north of New South Wales. Wave Rock is a spectacular rock formation that looks like an ocean wave. It is in Western Australia, and would take more than three days to drive to from Sydney!
8. Living a mere 60 kilometers from Toronto, the capital of the Canadian province of Ontario, skunkee thought it might be fun to buy her husband a gift certificate for the EdgeWalk, which is billed as 'the thrill of a lifetime'. What imposing structure gives the not-so-faint-at-heart the opportunity to test their fear of heights?

Answer: CN Tower

At 553.33 meters (1,815.4 feet) in height, the CN Tower has been attracting tourists from all over the world since its completion in 1976. Along with a 3D film about flight and a simulator ride, visitors are able to ascend the tower in a glass elevator, visit the observation floor, step out onto a glass floor and dine in the rotating restaurant.

In 2011 the EdgeWalk was opened. Tethered by cords and harnesses, hardy souls are invited to walk around the outside edge of the roof of the restaurant. This platform (which consists of a structurally sound but open grating) rises 356 meters (1.168 feet) above the ground below. At each point of the compass participants are invited to stop and perform some terrifying act (like leaning backwards off the platform - we have photographic proof). Mr. skunkee thoroughly enjoyed himself while skunkee waited in the tower's ground floor restaurant for the safe return of her husband.

The CN Tower was originally conceived as a communications tower and its name comes from the Canadian National Railway line that built the tower. However, in 1995 the tower was sold to the Canada Lands Company when the railway line became privatized. CN Tower now officially stands for Canada's National Tower, or Canadian National Tower, but it is mostly referred to as just the CN Tower.
In 1995 the American Society of Civil Engineers designated it as one of the Seven Modern Wonders of the World.

While the Rogers Centre (a.k.a. the Skydome) and the Air Canada Centre are also in Toronto, the Skyline Tower is in Niagara Falls.
9. LadyC's brother lives overseas from her in Belgium, and occasionally she has the opportunity to go and visit him there. Many tourists to Belgium travel to the site of several World War I battlefields which lie along Belgium's western region and northern France. This site is of particular interest to LadyC, as a Canadian! A very famous poem was written about it, by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae; part of the poem even appears on the "Canadian Journeys" series (2001) ten-dollar banknote. By what name are these battlefields collectively and commonly known?

Answer: Flanders Fields

The Flanders region includes parts of what are now Belgium, France and the Netherlands, but the fields in question can be found in the Belgian provinces of West Flanders and East Flanders, and in the French Nord-Pas de Calais region.

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1872. During the Second Battle of Ypres (1915), McCrae was stationed as a field surgeon and wrote the poem, "In Flanders Fields", following the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer. It begins:

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below."

"In Flanders Fields" is a staple for Remembrance Day ceremonies across Canada.
10. LeoDaVinci lived not far from the capital of the State of Israel, Jerusalem. One of the most impressive attractions there is the Dome of the Rock, or the Qubbat as-Sakhrah Masjid. What is the dome of this shrine constructed out of?

Answer: Gold

Often confused with the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of the Rock is a shrine that houses what is traditionally viewed in the Abrahamic religions as the rock of foundation. This is the rock from which the world was supposedly created. Traditionally, this is also the rock upon which Jacob dreamed of his ladder, the rock upon which Abraham was ready to sacrifice his son Isaac, and the place from which Muhammad ascended to heaven in his dream.

The Dome of the Rock is located in the Temple Mount complex, and is one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in the world. It was completed in 691 CE by Caliph Abd al-Malik. The dome has a wooden interior, but is covered in 80 kilograms of gold plating. The exterior of the dome was originally made of gold; however, due to wear and tear the dome had been replaced with a bronze and an aluminum dome before King Hussein of Jordan restored it to its original glory in 1993.

The shrine itself is a perfectly-proportioned octagonal building with arches for entry. Each length of wall is equal in length, and equal to the height of the building as well as the diameter of the dome. It is covered by millions of brightly-colored tiles and white marble. It is a very impressive sight, and the Palestinian Authority controls access to this site allowing a limited amount of non-Muslim visitors to view the building and the grounds twice a day, but not on weekends or on Muslim holidays either. Only Muslims are allowed to enter the shrine itself or the adjoining mosque.

It is truly one of the more iconic views of the Old City of Jerusalem, and one of the most impressive.
