Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two things connect the following presidents: Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson?

Answer: Firstly, they were originally the vice-president and upon the death of their predecessor, they became president. Secondly, they were elected to a full term themselves

Theodore Roosevelt became president after the assassination of William Mckinley in 1901 and was elected to a full term in 1904. Calvin Coolidge became president after the death of Warren Harding in 1923 and was elected to a full term in 1924. Harry Truman became president after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945 and was elected to a full term in 1948. Lyndon Johnson became president after the assassination of JFK in 1963 and was elected to a full term in 1964.
2. Which two presidents died on the same day?

Answer: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson

Coincidentally, they both died on 4 July 1826, exactly 50 years to the day that the Declaration of Independence was signed.
3. Who of the following did not become involved in any military conflicts during their time in office?

Answer: Calvin Coolidge

Abraham Lincoln was president during the Civil War (1861 - 1865). Woodrow Wilson was president during World War 1 (1914 - 1918). Franklin D. Roosevelt was president during World War 2 (1939 - 1945).
4. This president served two non-consecutive terms. Who is he?

Answer: Grover Cleveland

Grover Cleveland became president in 1885 and left office in 1889 only to enter the White House once again in 1893.
5. This president also served as the chief justice of the United States. Who is he?

Answer: William Taft

Warren Harding appointed Taft to the chief justiceship in 1921 after the death of Edward Douglass White (who Taft himself had appointed in 1910). Taft found the chief justiceship much more satisfying than the presidency.
6. Who was the first president to occupy the White House?

Answer: John Adams

Adams and his wife moved into the incomplete White House on 1st of November 1800.
7. Thomas Jefferson and this president both served as Secretary of State, Vice President and then President.

Answer: Martin Van Buren

Thomas Jefferson was Washington's Secretary of State (1790 - 1793) and then was Adam's vice president during his one term as president. Martin Van Buren was Jackson's Secretary of State (1829 - 1831) and vice president during Jackson's second term as president.
8. A number of presidents have been assassinated. Who of the following was not assassinated?

Answer: William H. Harrison

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth. James A. Garfield was assassinated in 1881 by Charles J. Guiteau. William McKinley was assassinated in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz. William H. Harrison was another president that died while in office but died of natural causes.
9. Which president died after 32 days in office?

Answer: William H. Harrison

He gave a two hour inaugural speech on a day of strong winds and rain without a coat or hat. As a result of this, he caught pneumonia and died a month after.

Because this was the first time a president had died in office, his vice president, John Tyler, had insisted that he was THE president and not merely an acting president. Thus, a precedent was set that would led to the 25th amendment in the United States Constitution in 1967.
10. Which of the following vice presidents did not become president by direct election?

Answer: Gerald Ford

Gerald Ford became president upon the resignation of Richard Nixon.
