In the year 2019, an Uber driver drops a now-adult Bobby Richter off at Camp Redwood's access road. Walking through the front gate he arrives at a still-standing main stage still decked out with banners from 1989. He takes a few photos before Montana surprises him, asking what year it is. Since 1989, not even hardcore death tourists have been visiting the camp; the plan to get paranormal investigators to show up failed. All of the ghosts were forgotten. Montana warns Bobby to leave; everyone else at the camp is likely to kill him. It doesn't matter though-- Bobby is there to find his father. Montana realizes exactly who he is and gives him a hug.

In 1948, back when the camp was still known as Camp Golden Star, Lavinia Richter worked at the cafeteria while her two sons attended. Though Bobby, her youngest, had a perfectly fine time getting along at camp, it was Benjamin who struggled to fit in. One day, the boys went out to the lake to go swimming and, urged by his mother to look out for Bobby, Benjamin made the decision to call off their swimming plans. Benjamin went off into the woods, but Bobby disobeyed and hopped into the water.

In 1985, a couple of German motel tenants can't sleep and one of them heads next door to ask them to turn it down. Richard Ramirez answers, refusing to turn down Billy Idol, and he nearly drags the tourist into his room to kill her, but Benjamin stops him. The two have travelled for a year together and Richter is tired of the killings. It doesn't change too much until Richter decides to give away Ramirez's location, convincing a group of Los Angeles locals that he's the Night Stalker. They chase him through a local neighbourhood while Richter drives off.

The year was 1980 when Donna performed her stake-out, waiting until a car drove up to a California home and the drive and his passenger headed inside. Donna, following behind, opened the front door with a credit card just in time to hear the scream coming from one of the other rooms. The truth was that the driver was her own father, and she was initially staking his house out to catch him in the act for cheating on her mother. What she found was much worse; the woman in the bedroom was disembowelled when Donna opened the door. Her father, citing a hunger within, knew he wouldn't be able to stop, so he killed himself there, despite Donna's pleas, to end it.

While Brooke, Chet, Ray, and Rita search the nurse's cabin for Rita's keys, Richard Ramirez pounds on the locked cabin door. Chet and Ray work together to try and block the entry with furniture and they succeed in waiting out the banging, but only until he starts breaking the windows in an attempt to get in. Rita scrambles to locate the keys and finally does while Ray suggests they split up-- survival of the fittest and all. That's when Ramirez finally breaks in. The murderer goes straight for Ray, slashing at his arms with his knife, but Chet is able to shove him off and allow all of them to get out.

Although Montana likely should have been more concerned with the corpse in the locker room, she instead took the opportunity to use Richard Ramirez for what he was good at. After a bit of fun, she asked him if he would kill for her. As it turned out, Brooke's husband-to-be, in his misplaced rage, shot Montana's brother Sam-- his best man-- at the wedding. Montana blamed Brooke for the death; she believes Brooke cheated and lied about it. Ramirez vowed he would make her suffer.

In their own cabin, Montana, Xavier, and Trevor wait for their own menace to leave and sure enough, he stops banging on the door with little fuss. Trevor checks under the crack of the door to make sure their stalker is gone, but he's not; Mr. Jingles appears at the window and breaks it open before tossing a flaming bag into the cabin. Trevor stomps it out only to find the bag is filled with human excrement, and when the counsellors check outside, they find that their tormentor is actually two townies pulling pranks in Mr. Jingles' outfit. Montana and Trevor chastise them, but only until the real Mr. Jingles appears behind the boys from own, kills them both, and takes their ears as souvenirs.

On the day of the festival in 1989, Margaret was disappointed to find that some of the bands simply weren't showing. Getting off the phone, she got the truth from Courtney-- Trevor blocked the access road by placing a tour bus in the way and standing out front, turning cars away by claiming the fire department shut them down. Margaret, in retaliation for Courtney's poor work, shot him in the head and went out to confront Trevor out front. Though Trevor planned to fight back, Margaret shot him in the leg and chest, leaving him for dead just outside the main gate, the perfect spot not to return to Camp Redwood after death. Fortunately, Brooke was lurking just around the corner. After Margaret drove off, Brooke helped carry him into the park and into Montana's waiting arms.

At Camp Redwood, Margaret is brought to see the carnage in Kajagoogoo's bus. Courtney, who already took too long to inform Margaret, suggests they call the police as soon as possible, but Margaret, intending for the festival to go off without a hitch, urges him to purchase some plastic sheeting, garbage bags, good rubber gloves, and a butcher's knife to get rid of the bodies. The bus needs to be bleached as well, and no one will know, according to Margaret, provided everything else goes well. When Courtney loads the pieces of Kajagoogoo into the back of his van, he hears the band practicing around the corner and, sure enough, their ghosts are there.

Donna brings Brooke back to a motel room and lets her know that she drugged her to convince others that she was executed, but the medication she used, known for mimicking brain damage, will take a few days to get out of her system. Donna stays by her side during the withdrawals and after a few days, Brooke has the strength to get the upper hand and, at the point of a needle, asks Donna why she's doing what she's doing. Donna, clearly spooked by what she saw in the woods five years earlier, says she's just trying to make it right.

Behind the shower shack, the only remaining car is already ablaze by the time the surviving counsellors get to it. Xavier suggests it's a good thing; the fire could be a signal and they should spread it through the woods. Margaret knocks him out with the butt of her gun before he can do anything rash and they haul him to one of the cabins. Unfortunately, there's not much to do; Margaret's gun is out of bullets. She does, however, remember that there was a couple camping across the lake the day before, so she and Chet head out to take the boat over the water. Montana stays back with Brooke and Xavier, and it's the perfect opportunity for Montana to exact her revenge on Brooke. She picks up a hatchet, but Brooke believes she sees Ray walking around outside and she goes and investigates alone. She finds Ray outside, sure enough, not knowing he was previously murdered.

While several of the campers flee through the woods, Chet and Ray, split up from Brooke and Rita after leaving the infirmary, fall into a carefully dug pit lined at the bottom with long, wooden stakes. Ray manages to dodge the stakes, but Chet is impaled by one of them, landing on his back and forcing a pole through his shoulder. Ray tries to pull him off, but it's no use; it's probably stopping him from bleeding out In a clearing, Mr. Jingles locates a third townie who, eager to support the bullies he's come in with, dons his mask and heads out to pull some pranks. Jingles allows him to go onward without killing him.

Montana explains to Bobby that Brooke's decision to help Trevor into Camp Redwood changed her personality. Her hatred towards Brooke poisoned her, and she decided then and there that the killings needed to stop. The ghosts could be reasoned with, but they needed to take care of Margaret. The problem was that she was working with two dangerous men. Using the other ghosts, Trevor killed Bruce easily, dumping him onto public land so that he wouldn't hang around at the camp. Ramirez was tougher. Montana appeared before him and, to stop him from leaving the Camp, she insisted that Billy Idol made it through the road block and led him to the Richter cabin for the other ghosts to take him down. Montana made the first stab before they all moved in for the kill. But Ramirez vowed he'd be back. And he did come back, repeatedly, over thirty years. The ghosts, all forty of them, would take turns killing him to keep him from leaving Camp Redwood.

As roadies set up the main stage for Billy Idol, Richard Ramirez tries to get closer to the action. One of the roadies gives him a guitar pick and it's enough to satisfy him; he goes into the woods to play some air guitar. When he does, it's Richter's opportunity to jump him and the two go brawling... at least until Bruce hits Richter with his car. Richter gets away, but Bruce, recognizing Ramirez as the Night Stalker, decides to geek out and offer his services so that they can both up their body counts. Bruce is in when he finds out that the goal is to kill Mr. Jingles; he's big game.

Margaret paddles the boat out into the lake and asks Chet whether or not he believes in life after death, absolution, and repenting his sins. Considering the circumstances of the night, Chet isn't really willing to hear her out and refuses to confess anymore, but Margaret continues on, confessing a great deal herself. She admits that there's no one across the lake; she had to bring him out to the boat alone so that she could kill him without the others around. She knocks him out with an oar, removes his ear, and ties an anchor around his legs before tipping him over the side.

Margaret finds the decapitated bodies of the local pranksters outside the cabins when Trevor comes across her. She's in disbelief when she's told that Mr. Jingles killed the boys and though Trevor tries to convince her, she refuses to leave because of the school bus of children expected to arrive the next morning (and, as she says, she has a gun). Xavier heads to the mess hall to find Bertie making sandwiches. She refuses to listen to his plea to leave and, though Xavier hides under one of the tables, she stays still as Mr. Jingles approaches and enters. She turns around to face her former coworker and nervously starts to make him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as he takes a seat.

Brooke and Rita are the only ones to make it back to the car and Rita tries to convince Brooke that they should stay at the camp and wait for the others. Brooke, afraid, suggests going for help and Rita concedes, handing her the keys to the car before restraining the counsellor and injecting her with a sedative. The truth is that Rita, as the campers know her, was never a nurse. Actually named Donna Chambers, she arrived at Benjamin Richter's mental institution to speak to Dr. Hopple a week before heading to the camp in an effort to learn more about the serial killer. Hopple attempted to convince Donna that there was no point in her visiting, but Donna was able to persuade the doctor of her fraudulent credentials and get an audience to Mr. Jingles in his cell. She managed to get left alone with him in an interrogation room and speak to him bluntly about his killings to learn more and fuel her interest in serial killing.

Bobby thanks Trevor and Montana. Since Ramirez planned to kill him for three decades and they took up the mantle of keeping him at bay, the ghosts saved his life. Bobby refuses to leave, however, since he still plans on speaking to his dad. Unbeknownst to the others, Satan is taking the opportunity, while Ramirez's current guards are engaged in a game of Strip Pictionary, to loosen the killer's bindings. Richard manages to get out and head to the counsellor's cabin just in time to hear Bobby's voice. He attacks, but Bobby is able to get away while the ghosts make an attempt to subdue the killer, even if it means taking a couple of slashes from Richard's knife. Montana urges him to seek answers from the director of the Red Meadows Asylum, and he departs.

Brooke and Donna end up back at their motel room and hear a knock at the door. It's none other than Stacey, and she knows who they are. She invites the pair to her room and reveals that she's been studying Redwood for three years, so she has a pretty good idea of who they are, but she can't put her finger on why Donna saved Brooke from the execution. Brooke offers Stacey a deal: if Stacey brings them back to Redwood in the trunk of her car, she'll take her on a tour and tell her the whole truth, but Stacey needs to be quiet about Donna's identity and Brooke's faked death until after her book comes out. Since it's a better story, Stacey agrees wholeheartedly.

Brooke is transported to San Quentin after her final trial and placed into her cell on death row. As she walks past the cells, Richard Ramirez peers out of his own and can't help but suggest she should've let him kill her back in 1984. At Camp Redwood, Montana goes through belongs left at the birdwatcher's tent when Ray stomps over, asking her and Xavier to stop killing everyone who wanders in. They don't listen, however, feeling that there are no consequences for their actions while they're dead. Continuing to root through the items left at the campsite, Montana finds a newspaper saying that Brooke is to be put to death by lethal injection, convicted on account of eleven counts of first-degree murder. And that's when the birdwatcher's girlfriend comes by. When Xavier kills her quickly and without remorse, Ray decides not to let it happen anymore.

Mr. Jingles asks Bertie she came back, and she admits she did it to help Margaret overcome her horrible memories of that fateful night. That's when Xavier accidentally drops something. As soon as Mr. Jingles hears the noise under the table, he looks down to find Xavier and catch him before he can escape. Though Bertie tries to defend the counsellor, the two of them are quickly overpowered. Jingles knocks out Xavier, but stabs Bertie repeatedly before heating up the mess hall oven. He cranks it up to the max before locking Xavier inside.

Turning off the tape recorder in the interrogation room, Donna tried to narrow down the causes of serial killers, especially since there was such a high prevalence of them after the mid-1970s. Although she thought it could have been triggered by a frequency of pornography or PTSD-related issues brought on by the Vietnam War, Richter theorized that maybe high-fructose corn syrup was a factor since it was being added to so many things. Richter, in the institution for fourteen years, told the authorities he didn't remember killing the campers but he was told he had a psychotic break leading to memory loss. He asks if Donna can help him and she says she can, but only in his natural habitat, and with the camp reopening, it's the perfect opportunity. Richter doesn't want to kill again, and he knows he would if he went back, but Donna encourages him to do it so that they can figure out why serial killers do what they do and, maybe, stop them altogether. She gives him the plan and the tools and tells him he'll see her at the camp in a week.

Xavier refuses to give in to Blake's demands and tries to run away but to no avail; Blake quickly brings him down to the ground and threatens to send Xavier's video to all of his friends and acquaintances, almost surely preventing him from having meaningful relationships or work. But Xavier thinks fast, offering up a better man for the job and leading Blake to the showers to ogle Trevor. It's then that Xavier is able to make a quick and quiet escape...and Mr. Jingles is able to swoop in and jam a knife through the back of Blake's skull and through the peephole.

The counsellors arrive at Camp Redwood in short time, meeting the new owner, Margaret Booth and discovering that they are essentially the majority of the staff for the summer (due to the Olympics creating numerous temporary jobs). The man from the road is rushed to the infirmary to be looked at by Nurse Rita; she insists that she works at Hawthorn Hospital's ER during the rest of the year and he'll make a recovery under her care. In the meantime, the counsellors are given a tour of the camp and told the rules. The lake, Margaret informs them, is allegedly bottomless, and drowning is the number one cause of death for campers in the United States. Margaret also introduces the counsellors to Bertie, their chef, who worked at the camp when Margaret was just a counsellor herself. The tour ends with a trip through the girls' cabin and the boys' cabin where Margaret, a staunch advocate of purity, insists upon celibacy as one of her few rules for the summer.

In 1989, Margaret tried to get the bus moved well into the night, but there, trapped in her old director's cabin, she was surrounded by the ghosts of the counsellors who died at the camp those many years ago. Donna was the first to get to her though, sneaking in through a back door and ambushing her while she loaded her pistol. Margaret got the upper hand for that fight, but it gave Brooke a chance to jump in and deal her own damage though, unfortunately, it resulted in her getting shot in the stomach. Donna used this extra time to let the ghosts in to claim their prize, and with that they carried Margaret to the woodchipper, cut her to pieces, and chopped her up over the property line to avoid having her haunt the camp.

Montana and Trevor share a moment with each other and Montana reminds herself of her goal-- she still wants to kill everyone at the festival, if not to find a solution to getting away from Camp Redwood, then to have more people to spend her time with. Trevor offers to stay with her, at least for the next fifty years, and he promises to be by her side. As he leaves the cabin with her, Margaret watches from afar. Ramirez and Bruce wander through the woods looking for Richter and Xavier finds them first, deciding to lead them to Richter's buried corpse. That's where Richter finds them, dispatching Xavier's ghost and sending Bruce away. Ramirez, now knowing that Richter can't leave, threatens to head to Alaska to kill his son anyways and, unfortunately, the moment is cut short. Margaret shoots Richter's ghost in the head and asks for the others' help.

After Brooke and Ray are finished in the mess hall, Brooke heads to the kitchen for a drink and opens the fridge only to find Ray's head staring back at her. Ray can't explain it, of course, and it causes Brooke to flee in terror, back out into the woods. She returns to the counsellors' cabin and Montana is the only one there, and while she expects help, Montana's still bloodthirsty; she knocks her to the ground. It's finally Montana's chance to reveal everything. It's almost as though it was fate that had Brooke attend the same aerobics class, and when Richard showed up, all the pieces fell into place.

Brooke awakens, remembering that Nurse Rita, actually a woman by the name of Donna, drugged her and dragged her through the woods. She finds herself locked in a tool shed and manages to break her way through the door before heading down one of the paths outside. It proves to be a bad idea as the way was trapped; she ends up in a rope net and Donna finds her there. Donna admits to everything she's doing; she keeps Brooke in the net because she needs to research Mr. Jingles and know whether or not he'll kill prey left for him (instead of engaging in the hunt).

With the story completed, Donna laments Brooke's death, saying that the camp ultimately dragged her back in and she couldn't break free. She tried to do right by Brooke, but it ultimately ended with her becoming the final girl. She checked in repeatedly, but she didn't want to keep going back to rub it in with the ghosts. Bobby thanks her for the money he'd been receiving for years (which he actually thought was coming from his father) but Donna denies sending him anything. Perhaps she wasn't the final girl after all. And that's what brings Donna and Bobby to rainy Oregon searching for answers. They scout out the savings and loans branch the routing numbers lead them to and they end up in Pineville, watching for familiar faces. And that's when they see a Ford pull up...and a familiar face step out.

Brooke and Donna get Stacey onto the property and tell her the story, insisting that Margaret and Mr. Jingles fought against Richard Ramirez while she hung from a net in a tree. Donna worries that Stacey is only there for a paycheck, and she's probably not wrong, but Brooke plans to kill her in the shack where Donna tied her up five years ago. As they head onward, the other killers watch from a distance. When Richter returns, he's tied up by Montana and the other counsellor ghosts for failing to fix their situation, and as they move in to take their revenge on him, he begs for a chance to kill Ramirez, if only to save his child's life. It's then that he reveals to the others that Montana was the one responsible for bringing Ramirez to the camp, and though they realize the severity of the situation, they don't let him go free.
