Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where does the name 'canary' come from?

Answer: Canary Islands

Canaries gain their name from the Canary Islands, but they can be found on several other island groups e.f. Azores, Madeira. The name Canary is Latin for "of the dogs" and this name came about due to the islanders having many dogs or "canines".
2. Canaries are only yellow.

Answer: False

Canaries come in a variety of colors including the famed yellow, cinnamon, green, brown, white, gray, orange agate, frosted orange agate, Red Bronze, Orange Brown, Frosted Orange Brown, Frosted Red Orange Brown and last and perhaps not all white and orange like our Gushi here in Israel.
3. Jalapeno peppers are acceptable as canary food.

Answer: true

However celery, onions, iceberg lettuce, tomato, apple seeds, chocolate, mushrooms, avocado and mangos are just a few things that should never be given to your canary as it might be his or her last meal. Canaries do like hot peppers along with apples, pears, hard boiled egg and seeds.
4. A canary's cage is very important if you want it to live a long life. Which of these are concerns in picking out a cage?

Answer: All of these

The right cage makes all the difference. Canaries don't climb like some birds so cages that are tall are lost on this breed. They are fliers and hoppers so long cages spanning no less than 20 inches are required. When it comes to the shape a rectangle or square shaped cage is more desirable because the canary gains a feeling of safety from this design. Always when considering a cage make certain there are no hazards for your bird to get caught on and subsequently get hurt.
5. Canaries can be taught to say words.

Answer: false

Canaries are clever but this is not part of their repertoire. However learning different types of canary songs is in their range of ability. This factor has caused different groups to breed various types of canaries for their songs with little interest in their physical attributes. Nonetheless, through breeding, colors change as well as plumage and this gives the canaries a wide range of differences.
6. Proper placement of the cage is essential for the life of your bird. Which of these conditions apply?

Answer: All of these

Drafts and direct sun light overwhelm canaries to the point of death. They can handle cold temperatures but drafts whether they are warm or cool breezes simply will kill your bird. Sunlight too can overheat your bird to the point of death. The idea of placing the bird at 'eye level' simply makes the bird feel secure but make sure those eyes are not the ones belonging to the family cat, dog or an unruly child!
7. Which of these are good ways to keep your canary clean?

Answer: All of these

A note about bird baths. While a canary loves to take them daily if allowed it is essential to make sure they are not exposed to drafts afterwards and that they're supervised while doing this so drowning does not take place. Removing spoiled food and droppings is straight forward enough and the sterilization of the dishes is to prevent bacteria from growing.

This is two fold- one, make certain the dish is not porous and open to bacteria growing and two, do not use bleach or other strong chemicals to clean with because canaries are highly sensitive to smells and can be killed by them.
8. Canaries enjoy being held.

Answer: false

Canaries hate to be held period! But at times it is essential whether that be to change a cage or inspect them for disease. Something that comes up frequently on the care of canaries is how they are susceptible to heart attacks from being held. This is possible but is not likely.

They do have a tendency to remain mildly shocked after the experience because from their perspective they think you're going to eat them. In some instances they lay down motionless for a few minutes and then revive. If this should happen give him a bit of space and allow him to readjust.
9. Only male birds are colorful and sing.

Answer: true

In the bird world a bird attracts its mate by being beautiful in both appearance and voice and this duty lies solely on the male. There are occasions with some species where this rule does not hold true of course, but in canaries the job of song and color is on the male.
10. The "lizard canary" is the one of the oldest bred types of canary still available in the world today. Why does this breed carry the name "lizard"?

Answer: The feathers look reptilian

This breed type of canary goes clear back to the 1700's. Originally it was a French breed but they were imported to England during the persecution of the French Huguenot weavers who were ardent Calvinists. So once in a while something positive happens out of religious persecution.
11. This type of canary, if you can believe it, is bred to be small, short and stubby. Although it is not bred for its song it has a good song nonetheless. Which breed is this?

Answer: Gloster

This particular breed is often called the 'Beatles' canary due to its having a head of feathers that covers its eyes like some of the early Beatles hairdos in the 1960's.
12. The following varieties, Hartz, Mechelse Waterslager, Sakser are know for what prominent characteristic feature?

Answer: crest

These breeds were actually first on the scene by about one hundred years before the Gloster variety.
13. The Fife canary is named after his song which mimics the instrument by the same name.

Answer: false

While that would be quite an accomplishment, it's not the case. The name derives from the Scottish county Fife where they were first bred.
14. This breed has acquired quite the number of nicknames to include "Guardsman". "Gentleman of the Fancy" and the name I am looking for in this question. What area of England is the variety also known by?

Answer: Yorkshire

While this breed was first introduced in Bradford, it was first shown in Yorkshire and hence took the name of that place.
15. The English music group The Police sang a song 'Canary In A Coalmine' which, indicates a perilous end. The song itself builds off the fact that canaries were brought underground by miners for what purpose?

Answer: They died due to methane gases being present

The canaries are very sensitive to smells and any overwhelming scent can kill them. This includes household cleaners, non-stick frying pans, paint, smoke and in this particular case methane gas. Since the bird is smaller than a human it would succumb to the gases before the miners and this would alert them to evacuate till the gases dissipated.
