Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This famous actor and dancer was married to his first wife from 1933-1954. Her death left him so devastated that it would be 26 years before he married again. Who was he?

Answer: Fred Astaire

This giant of a man, named the fifth "Greatest Male Star of All Time" by the American Film Institute, pursued his future wife, Phyllis, for two years before she finally accepted him. A divorcee herself, the marriage between Phyllis and Astaire was, however, an extraordinarily happy one.

The couple had two children and Fred's love for his family was a Hollywood byword. He actually broke his wrist when he was 78, while playing games with his grandson - riding on the boy's skateboard. The death of Phyllis, from lung cancer, broke his heart and he tried to withdraw completely from his career.

He even offered the pay all costs to date for the film "Daddy Long Legs" (released in 1955) on which he had been working at the time. Thankfully, he was persuaded to stay on and the film was another outstanding success for him.

It is doubted whether he ever watched it though. For 26 years he then remained single, until eventually remarrying Robyn Smith, a jockey, in 1980. She was his junior by 45 years, but that marriage too was happy. Fred Astaire died in 1987, at the age of 88, asking his family to pass on his sincere thanks to his millions of fans, world wide, for their continued support during his long career.
2. He never did say, "You dirty rat!" in any of his films, but it's a quote forever associated with him. Who was this actor, who was married to his wife for almost 64 years, until his death in 1986?

Answer: James Cagney

Born in 1899, the shy red-headed Cagney first met 16 year old Frances Willard "Billie" Vernon when they were both working as dancers. They married three years later in 1922. It was a long and happy partnership. He talked Billie, whom he preferred to call Willie, into moving into a ramshackle farm early in the marriage. Though definitely reluctant to do so, she trotted along after him and grew to love farming life as much as he did. Such was their enjoyment of farming life, they bought a second and bigger one in 1955.

It was here that Cagney developed his farming expertise to such a degree he was awarded an honorary degree by Rollin College. They called this second farm Verney Farm, a combination of their two surnames, and that symbolised their long life together - a true partnership. Dancer, actor, farmer, horse and cattle breeder of renown, painter and sailor, Cagney was probably best know for his portrayal of George M. Cohan in the 1942 film "Yankee Doodle Dandy" for which he won an Academy Award.

He passed away in 1986, after a long and happy marriage of almost 64 years to his beloved Willie, who survived him by eight years. Just for the record, she was nothing like any of the women portrayed in Cagney's films. She was in fact a firm and very stabilizing influence on this brilliant and feisty star's life.
3. He may not have ridden a chariot in real life, but which Academy Award actor was married to his wife Lydia from 1944 until his death in 2008?

Answer: Charlton Heston

Not only was Heston known for his movie roles, he was also a noted stage actor as well, specialising in Shakespearian roles. In film, some of his movies included the 1956 film "The Ten Commandments", and "Ben Hur" in 1959 (for which he won an Academy Award), "The Agony and the Ecstasy" in 1965 (playing Michelangelo), and "The Planet of the Apes" in 1968.

In his later years, he became a political activist, speaking out against racism for example, and gun control laws. This was a subject on which he would say, "I doubt any of you would prefer a rolled up newspaper as a weapon against a dictator or a criminal intruder." Heston, who was born in 1923, died in 2008, with his wife of 64 years, Lydia, by his side. To his friends, Heston was always known as Chuck, but Lydia always referred to the man she loved during their long and happy life together - as Charlie.
4. Known for such wonderful movies as 1946's "It's A Wonderful Life" and 1950's "Harvey", this actor named James married his wife, Gloria, in 1949. The couple were still together when she passed away from lung cancer in 1994. What was his last name?

Answer: Stewart

I loved James (Jimmy) Stewart. He seemed so kind and gentle always, and this apparently was an opinion shared by all who knew the tall, softly spoken gentleman who passed away in 1997. Joan Crawford described him as "an endearing perfectionist with a droll sense of humour and a shy way of watching you to see if you would react to that humour." With his wife Gloria, the couple had twin daughters and adopted two sons as well. Stewart was active in philanthropic affairs all his life, raising millions of dollars for child and family development.

He popularised youth character training through his support of the scouting movement, wrote poetry, spent endless hours making model aeroplanes, loved his dog, and was an avid gardener. When asked, on his 80th birthday, how he'd like to be remembered, he replied "Someone who believed in hard work and love of country, love of family and love of community." I think that lovely, lovely man pretty well achieved that objective, don't you?
5. I was an American vaudeville and film star, known for my pantomime style of acting, my curly red wig, my harp and the fact I seldom spoke on film. I was married to my actress wife from 1936 until my death in 1964. Can you name me?

Answer: Harpo Marx

Harpo (Adolph) Marx was the second eldest of the Marx Brothers, a team of actors known from the 1900s to the 1950s for their vaudeville and Broadway appearances and comic movies. One of their many films included 1935's "Night at the Opera", ranked as one of the funniest films ever made by the American Film Institute.

Born in 1888, Harpo's acting style consisted of clowning, sight gags and pantomime and, for the most part, he never spoke on film, but always blew a whistle to communicate instead. When he was only in second grade at school, Harpo quit as a result of peer bullying, yet went on to become one of the big name stars of the time.

In 1936 he married actress Susan Fleming in what would be a marriage of love that lasted until his death in 1964. Such was the popularity of the Marx Brothers, that President Roosevelt sent a telegram of congratulations to the pair on their wedding day.

The couple had no biological children of their own, but adopted four instead. He passed away in 1964 on his wedding anniversary, from heart complications following surgery.

His death devastated the remaining Marx Brothers and Groucho's son, Arthur, went on record as saying that it was the only time he ever saw his father cry.
6. Born in Ireland in 1953, I first rose to fame in the television series "Remington Steele", which ran from 1982 to 1987. Married to Australian actress Cassandra Harris for seventeen years until she passed away from cancer in 1991, I was completely devastated by her death and it would be ten years before I married again. Who am I?

Answer: Pierce Brosnan

Brosnan has a combination of smooth sophistication to his personality and acting style, with a hint of vulnerability and sensitivity. He quite honestly has the ability to melt the heart of any woman. Perhaps we know him best for the character he portrayed in a series of the "James Bond" movies.

He would say this of his first meeting with Cassandra: "What a beautiful looking woman. I never for an instant thought she was someone I'd spend seventeen years of my life with. I didn't think of wooing her, or attempting to woo her. I just wanted to enjoy her beauty and who she was." The couple had one son together. Cassandra had previously been married and had two other children.

When their father passed away in 1986, Brosnan adopted them and they took on his surname.

In 2001 he married again, this time to journalist Keely Smith, and the couple added to Brosnan's brood by having another two children. As well as being a rather fine actor, and a skilled painter, Brosnan also carries out a vast amount of charitable work for children's organisations, the environment, and women's health charities.

He's the all round man - swoon.
7. Which star of the original "Star Trek" television series and films was married to his wife for fifty years, until his death?

Answer: DeForrest Kelley

Kelly began his entertainment as a singer - which makes me laugh for some reason. As he used several lines of this kind in the popular series, one can almost hear him saying "...Jim, I'm a doctor, not a canary!". This love of singing sprang from his earlier roots of singing in a church choir as a child.

As an adult, he served in the US Army Air Forces during world war two. How appropriate is that? After the war he was spotted by a talent scout and didn't have to struggle at all as a young actor starting out.

In fact, his first film, the 1947 movie "Fear in the Night" earned him national recognition. From there he appeared in a series of westerns, or in films where he played the villain. During this time he also appeared in a couple of pilots written by an ex-policeman named Gene Roddenberry.

This would eventually gain him world wide recognition and a devoted following for his role as Dr Leonard McCoy in Roddenberry's successful "Star Trek" television series and movies. He married his wife Carolyn Dowling in 1949 and the devoted couple were still together at his death, from stomach cancer, fifty years later, when he was beamed up to his ultimate destination.
8. Which famous cowboy, comedian, humorist, vaudeville performer and actor of 71 movies, was married to his wife Betty for 27 years, until his untimely early death in 1935?

Answer: Will Rogers

Will Rogers was an actor in both the silent movies and the talkies and lived from 1879 to 1935. Rogers was also of Cherokee descent and would laughingly say of his heritage that, "My ancestors didn't come over on the Mayflower - but they met the boat." He married his wife Betty in 1908 and the couple had four children.

They were married happily until his death, which happened when this very witty and talented man who was universally loved, died in a plane crash.
9. Following the death of his adored first wife, this suave English actor married again a second time in what would be a tumultuous but permanent marriage until his death in 1983. You shouldn't have to go round the world in 80 days to know his name. Who was he?

Answer: David Niven

Totally grief stricken after the death of the aristocratic Primula, whom he always called Primmie, Niven attempted suicide with a gun that failed to discharge. Eventually however, on his return to work, he met Swedish model Hjordis Tersmeden in 1948. Of this meeting he would say, "I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life - tall, slim, auburn hair, upturned nose, lovely mouth and the most enormous grey eyes I had ever seen.

It really happened the way it does when written by the worst lady novelists...I goggled. I had difficulty swallowing and had champagne in my knees." The marriage would prove troubled, however, because of her descent into alcoholism and affairs with other men. Yet, apart from a very brief separation of a couple of weeks, Niven remained steadfastly loyal to his second wife until he died.

This was a feat of endurance, which, from all accounts, should have earned him some sort of award for meritorious service. He loved her, and that's all there was to it.
10. Born in 1917, this actor was the original wild boy, including a stint as a member of a chain gang. Fortunately his marriage to his wife Dorothy in 1940 slowed him down, but only a little. They were together for 57 years. Heaven knows who this actor is, Mr Allison. Do you?

Answer: Robert Mitchum

Mitchum appeared in a staggering number of films during his career, over 120 of them in fact. These included "One Minute to Zero" in 1952, "The Night of the Hunter" in 1955, "Cape Fear" in 1962 and "Ryan's Daughter" in 1970. Society never did manage to tame him fully though and he was always a bit of a rebel all his life. Except, that is, for his happy marriage to the placid and calm Dorothy, which would produce three children. Mitchum, unknown to many people, was also a writer and considerably skilled as a singer and composer as well.

He disliked people becoming effusive about his acting however and proved difficult to interview. He once interrupted an interviewer in the middle of that person's waffling on about Mitchum's brilliance by stating bluntly, "Look! I have two kinds of acting. One on a horse and one off a horse. That's it."
