Before becoming an actor, native Californian Jason Lee was a professional skateboarder. Pilot Inspektor is the son of Lee and actress Beth Riesgraf, who is perhaps best known for playing master thief Parker in TNT's "Leverage". In interviews, Lee has credited the song "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot" by indie band Grandaddy as the source for his eldest child's name.

Gwyneth Paltrow had high-profile relationships with actors Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck before marrying Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin in 2003. A year later, they had a daughter they named Apple. Little brother Moses came along two years later. Gwyneth told Oprah in an interview that the name Apple conjured up purity, wholesomeness, and cleanliness for her.
