He was inspired by French magician, Jean Robert-Houdin. In 1892, he teamed with his brother, Theo for an act called The Substitution Trunk or The Metamorphosis Illusion. He did card tricks and was known as "The King of Cards". He also taught himself to get out of a strait jacket.

In 1898, he did an act called "The Handcuff Challenge", offering $100 to anyone who had handcuffs he could not get out of. He never paid out any money for the challenge. He was the world's handcuff king but that wasn't very lucrative.

He then became an escape artist. He went to Europe. In Paris, he jumped into the river with handcuffs on and escaped. This was one of many escapes. Others included escaping from sunken packaging crates, an enormous paper bag without tearing the paper, coffins, and a burglar proof safe.

In 1910, he made the first aerial flight in Australia. Another escape trick he built was called the "Chinese Water Torture Cell". In 1918, a "Vanishing Elephant" in New York City was another illusion. Ehrich Weiss was born on March 24, 1874 in Budapest, Hungary and died on October 31, 1926 due to diffuse peritonitis and a ruptured appendix.

He took his magic secrets with him to the grave. Houdini's feats are continually attempted to this day.
