Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A fledgling actor (Lenny Baker) moves out of his parents' home, but can't seem to avoid his overbearing mother, played by Shelley Winters. What is this 1976 movie?

Answer: Next Stop, Greenwich Village

This movie has become a cult classic. Several successful actors got off to a good start in this ensemble film, including Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Walken, Antonio Fargas and Bill Murray (in an uncredited role.) The star of the film, Lenny Baker, won a Tony Award in 1977 for Best Actor (Musical) for "I Love My Wife." He died of cancer in 1982 at the age of 37.
2. Michael Cimino directed this 1980 western, which starred Walken and Kris Kristofferson. It was probably the most expensive movie ever made at the time, and it was a failure at the box office. Which movie is this?

Answer: Heaven's Gate

"Heaven's Gate" had a fine cast, including Joseph Cotten, Jeff Bridges, John Hurt, Christopher Walken, Sam Waterston and Isabelle Huppert. Still, the film was a notorious bomb, and pretty much put an end to Cimino's career as a director. He had achieved great success, and an Oscar for Best Director, for "The Deer Hunter" in 1978.

The three other films mentioned, "The Four Feathers" (2003), "Cutthroat Island" (1995) and "Ishtar" (1987), were all famous failures.
3. Salesman meets schoolteacher, they fall in love, then he cruelly deserts her to return to his wife. Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters star in this unusual musical film, set during the Great Depression. Name the movie.

Answer: Pennies From Heaven

This isn't your regular musical. The tone of this 1981 film is dark and rather depressing. But the performances from the principal actors are amazing. Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters are wonderful in this offbeat movie. Martin's dancing is a revelation, Peters is as talented as she is gorgeous, and the dance sequence featuring Christopher Walken is brilliant.

This film didn't do well at the box office, but it doesn't deserve to be forgotten.
4. A band of mercenaries are hired to plot the overthrow of the leader of an African country. This one is based on a best-selling novel by Frederick Forsyth. What is the title of this movie?

Answer: Dogs of War

"The Dogs of War" (1981) features Tom Berenger, Colin Blakely, Christopher Walken and Jobeth Williams. The other three answers are also novels written by Frederick Forsyth.
5. Agent 007 discovers a plot: Industrialist Max Zorin (Walken) is concocting a scheme to take over the global microchip market, which involves causing a series of explosions along the San Andreas Fault. Roger Moore is James Bond in this one--which is it?

Answer: A View to a Kill

"A View to a Kill" (1985) was the 14th James Bond film, and the last time Roger Moore played Bond. Grace Jones and Tanya Roberts were the "Bond Girls", and Christopher Walken played the deranged villain Max Zorin. "The Living Daylights" (1987), "Never Say Never Again" (1983) and "For Your Eyes Only" (1981) are other James Bond films.
6. Based on a true story, two brothers (played by Sean and Chris Penn), follow their homicidal father, played by Walken, into a life of robbery and murder. This 1986 film had a great cast and terrific performances. Which movie is it?

Answer: At Close Range

The part of the Penn brother's grandmother was played by Eileen Ryan, who is actually their real-life mother. Sadly, Chris Penn died in January 2006. The part of their father was played by Christopher Walken, in a convincingly menacing performance. He's also a great dancer, and he squeezed a bit of dancing into a pool-hall sequence which was very cool.

The other three films mentioned all feature the great Sean Penn: "The Falcon and the Snowman" was from 1985, "State of Grace" from 1990, and "Bad Boys" from 1983.
7. Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed this one. John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson play hired killers, Bruce Willis plays a boxer, and Ving Rhames and Uma Thurman play a happily married couple; their stories are all interconnected in brilliant fashion. Does "Royale with Cheese" ring a bell? If so, name the film.

Answer: Pulp Fiction

This is one of my all-time favorites. Travolta made his great comeback in this one, and of course we get to see him dance, which is always a treat. The dialogue between the two hit men is very funny, but it's a violent movie, and there are some unpleasant scenes. Christopher Walken's part had to do with some unfinished business with a pocket watch, which was a key part of that complicated story.
8. The clock is ticking for an accountant (played by Johnny Depp) who is being forced to assassinate the governor, or risk losing his daughter forever. Name this 1995 film.

Answer: Nick of Time

This film is done using the real time device, which does add to the film's suspense. Christopher Walken plays the bad guy in this one.
9. Denzel Washington plays John Creasy, a former government agent, who's been hired to protect a young girl in Mexico City. Walken plays an ex-colleague. Creasy is a drinker and a cynic. The child is kidnapped, and Creasy sets out to exact revenge on the kidnappers. What's the name of this movie?

Answer: Man on Fire

Creasy and the young girl (played by Dakota Fanning) become very close after she manages to break through Creasy's shell. The relationship between the two is beautifully done and very touching. Denzel Washington gives a great performance, and Dakota Fanning is truly a remarkable young actress. Christopher Walken does his usual fine work in the role of an ex-colleague of Creasy.

This 2004 movie was directed by Tony Scott, who captures perfectly the menacing atmosphere in Mexico City.
10. For which film did Christopher Walken win an Academy Award? Hint: He played Nick, the Russian roulette-playing soldier.

Answer: The Deer Hunter

Walken won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the 1978 film "The Deer Hunter". He's sometimes referred to as "weird" or "creepy", probably because of the roles he plays. (He did win the "Mutant Viewers' 2005 Cult Lifetime Achievement Award".) Christopher Walken was born Ronald Walken in 1943, in Queens, New York.

He married Georgianne Thon in 1969. A top casting director, she has worked on the HBO hits "The Sopranos" and "Entourage". I think he's a great actor, always interesting to watch, and very versatile. If you've seen "Pennies from Heaven", "The Deer Hunter" and "At Close Range", you know what I mean.
