Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Kenny's real name?

Answer: Maurice Cole

Kenny was born on Merseyside on 25 December 1944. He took his stage name from actor Edward Everett Horton, who was a childhood favourite of Kenny's.
2. Kenny's first job in broadcasting was on Wonderful Radio London. With which other DJ did he co-present a show?

Answer: Dave Cash

"The Kenny and Cash" show. Kenny had been offered a job presenting on the BBC's "Light Programme" but declined in favour of pirate radio.
3. Kenny was sacked from Radio London for making disparaging remarks on air. He moved to BBC Radio 1, but was again sacked in 1970. What was the reason for this?

Answer: He suggested that Mary Peyton, The Transport Minister's Wife, had bribed her driving test examiner

Although Kenny put a good deal of preparation into his radio show in the way of links and jingles, he often seemed to say the first thing that popped into his head whilst live on air. This delighted his fans but didn't go down too well with the powers that be! Rather in the manner of a parent forgiving a well-loved but naughty son, the BBC took him back in 1972.

He started pre-recording his programmes then, giving the Beeb a chance to check them first!
4. Whilst at Capital Radio, Kenny was given a copy of a record by his good friend Freddie Mercury. Freddie told him it was for private use only and it wasn't to be played on air. Kenny loved the song and immediately played it on his show. What song was this?

Answer: Bohemian Rhapsody

Record companies had deemed "Bohemian Rhapsody" too long to be commercially successful. Kenny once played it on air fourteen times in one day!
5. In 1978 "The Kenny Everett Video Show" started broadcasting on Thames TV. Which of the following was not one of Kenny's characters while the show was broadcast by Thames?

Answer: Gizzard Puke

Sid Snot was a biker - probably best remembered for trying (and failing) to flip cigarettes into his mouth. When Kenny transferred his show to the BBC, there was disagreement about which characters he was allowed to transfer, and so Gizzard Puke was invented - pretty much the same as Sid Snot but a punk instead of a biker. In the end, Kenny was allowed to transfer all the characters.

Marcel Wave was a "suave" Frenchman and Angry of Mayfair was a man in a smart jacket and bowler hat that used to rant against obscenity in society. As the cameras panned back at the end of the sketch, he was revealed to be wearing women's underwear.
6. Singer Sarah Brightman was a member of a dance troupe who featured on "The Kenny Everett Video Show". What was the name of this troop?

Answer: Hot Gossip

Hot Gossip were notorious for wearing sexy bondage style clothing and dancing very provocatively. Fathers all over the UK rushed to get home from work in time to supervise their offsprings' TV watching habits. That was my dad's story anyway!

Ruby Flipper appeared on "Top of the Pops" and Hot Gossamer were a parody dance group, the brainchild of comedian Benny Hill.
7. On what day was Kenny Born?

Answer: Christmas Day

Kenny was born on 25 December 1944, making him a Capricorn. Capricorns are typically organised, tidy, realistic, conventional, servile and respect authority. Kenny rather blew that theory out of the water!
8. Kenny was the announcer for which quiz show?

Answer: Celebrity Squares

Kenny's irreverent style was perfect for a show that never took itself too seriously.
9. In the 1983 General Election campaign, Kenny lent his support to which political party?

Answer: Conservative

Surprisingly, Kenny was a Conservative supporter. This probably stemmed from the fact that in the late 1960s the Conservatives (in opposition) were critical of Labour's plans to block offshore radio broadcasts. Kenny appeared at the Young Conservatives' Conference in 1983.
10. What was the title of Kenny's autobiography?

Answer: The Custard Stops At Hatfield

"The Custard Stops At Hatfield" was published in 1982. The title is apparently a reference to the air quality in London - the air becomes thin enough to breath at Hatfield.
