Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. So, let's just get it out of the way right from the top! What character is Kelsey Grammer best known for playing?

Answer: Frasier Crane

Kelsey Grammer played Frasier Crane starting with season three of "Cheers." He played the role for eight years on that show. He then got a spin-off series, "Frasier" after "Cheers" was canceled in 1993, which lasted another 11 seasons. That is 19 years. In 2023, he began a reboot series which ran for over a year, putting him at over two decades of playing the same character.

Fun fact: There is a meta-line in season 11 of the original "Frasier" in which Nanny G (guest staring Laurie Metcalf) says to Frasier, "Do you have any idea what it's like to play the same character for twenty years?"
2. Kelsey Grammer is his middle and last name; what is his real first name?

Answer: Allen

Allen Kelsey Grammer was born on Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands on February 21, 1955. After his parents divorced, he was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents in New Jersey and then Florida. His grandfather died from cancer shortly before Grammer turned twelve. This became the first in many family tragedies in his life.
3. What famous art school did Grammer attend but did not graduate?

Answer: Juilliard

Frank Damrosch founded Juilliard School in 1905, as the Institute of Musical Art. Later dance and drama were also added to the programs offered at the school, and it was renamed Julliard after Augustus D. Julliard, who was the school's biggest benefactor.

Grammer won a scholarship to study drama at Juilliard in the early 1970s. Then in 1975, his younger sister, Karen, was kidnapped, raped, and murdered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. After his sister's death, Grammer quit going to his classes and was expelled from the prestigious school.
4. What was Grammer's first Broadway play?

Answer: Macbeth

"Macbeth", or "The Scottish Play" as it is often called in the theatre world, opened on Broadway on January 22, 1981, and ran for 61 performances. When the show opened, Grammer played Lennox, a nobleman in Scotland. About a week later, as an understudy for the title role, he ended up replacing Philip Anglim as Macbeth, a general in the Scottish army.

In 2000, he reprised the role of Macbeth on Broadway, but the show closed after only ten days because there were not enough people going to see it.

Macbeth is Shakespeare's shortest and bloodiest play.
5. Does Kelsey Grammer have any children?

Answer: Yes

Grammer has at least four children. His daughter Greer has been on the reboot of "Frasier" (2023) as a guest star. She played Roz's daughter Alice.
6. On what show, starring Tim Daly and Crystal Bernard, did Kelsey Grammer have a one-off guest appearance as Frasier Crane in 1992?

Answer: Wings

"Wings" ran on NBC, as did both "Cheers" and "Frasier", from 1990-1997. The show took place on Nantucket Island. It was about two brothers who owned a small airline (Sandpiper Air). Joe (played by Daly) dated and later married Helen (played by Bernard), who owned a cafe in the same small airport. They and Joe's brother Brian (played by Steven Weber) all went to school together when they were younger.

In the episode Kelsey Grammer was on with Bebe Neuwirth (as Lilith Sternin-Crane) called "Planes, Trains and Visiting Cranes," Frasier is on the island for a workshop. Helen claims that Frasier ruined her life when he convinced her to go to New York in the past but Frasier tries to blame Joe.
7. What recurring character has Grammer voiced on "The Simpsons"?

Answer: Sideshow Bob

Sideshow Bob, also known as Robert Underdunk Terwilliger, Jr., is a Yale graduate pompous man. He is very similar to Frasier in his love of all things high society. Bob used to work for Krusty the Clown, but after years of abuse tried to frame Krusty for an armed robbery crime. Bart Simpson messed that plan up, and Bob was sent to prison. Bob has since tried to seek revenge against Bart, and they are now arch-enemies.
8. Did Kelsey Grammer win an Emmy playing Frasier on "Cheers"?

Answer: No

Grammer was nominated in 1988 and 1990 for an Emmy Award for playing Frasier Crane on "Cheers." He was also nominated for playing the role when he guest-starred on the crossover episode of "Wings."

Grammer did not win the Emmy, however, for playing this iconic role until 1994 when he was nominated for "Frasier." He won it four times in total during that series, which lasted eleven years.

Grammer also won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance as Sideshow Bob in 2006.
9. In 2016, Grammer won his first Tony Award as the producer of what musical, which won Best Revival of a Musical?

Answer: The Color Purple

"The Color Purple" was adapted from the book by Alice Walker, written in 1982; the movie came out in 1985. It first opened on Broadway in 2005, and ran for three years. The revival opened in late 2015 and ran until early 2017. On Christmas 2023, a film adaptation of the musical version was released in theatres.

The show tells the story of Celie, as she goes from childhood to adulthood, She experiences emotions from joy to despair, and learns about love and life.

Grammer was producer for the show. The producer of a show is the one who is in charge of hiring the creative team, such as the directors, and they have to get the funding for the show, oversee the budget, negotiate the contracts, and set the ticket prices. They are in charge of the closing when a show finishes a run, making sure everything has been paid for that needs to be paid for, and that everything is out of the theatre that needs to be taken out. They also work with the creative team to make sure the show is good from start to finish.
10. Kelsey Grammer missed some time on his show "Frasier." Where was he?

Answer: Betty Ford Center

Kelsey Grammer has had a history of alcoholism and cocaine addiction. In 1996, he was under the influence and crashed his vehicle. Along with that his work was suffering, so his co-workers from both "Cheers" and "Frasier" held an intervention. Grammer went to the Betty Ford Center, a treatment center for substance abuse addictions in California, for thirty days to get help.

He must have gone in when they did not have a lot of filming, as he only missed one episode. Frasier's brother Niles (David Hyde-Pierce) filled in for his brother, Frasier, on the radio in an episode called "Head Game." Frasier was at a week-long psychiatrists' convention. Grammer is in less than three minutes at the beginning when he asks his brother to fill in for him. This part was filmed last and added into the episode before it aired on TV.
