Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Margaret Hamilton, who was probably best known for playing the Wicked Witch of the West in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz", famously campaigned for which of these causes?

Answer: animal welfare

Much like Bob Barker, Hamilton was an animal welfare activist. She often appeared in public service promotions advocating spaying and neutering pets. Considering her performance as the frighteningly scary Wicked Witch, it is ironic that she actually loved children and her first job was that of being a teacher. Actors William Windom and Jim Backus were two of her students. Margaret passed away in 1985 at age 82.
2. Which of these character actors was NOT born in the United States of America?

Answer: Charles Laughton

Coburn was born in Macon, Georgia; Price in St. Louis, Missouri; and Hamill in Oakland, California. Laughton came into the world in Scarborough, England. Some of his memorable movie roles included "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1935), "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1939) and "Young Bess" (1953) amongst many others. Laughton died in 1962.
3. Shelley Morrison played the outspoken El Salvadorian housemaid of millionaire Karen Walker on the popular TV sitcom "Will and Grace". Specializing in Latin American roles, was she born in this region?

Answer: no

Born in 1936 in New York City, Shelley's birth name was Rachel Mitrani. She had to learn English as a second language. She portrayed Sister Sixto on "The Flying Nun" TV sitcom, and had roles in the movies "Mackenna's Gold" (1969), "Three Guns for Texas" (1968) and "Troop Beverly Hills" (1989), as well as many TV series.
4. Did actor Wesley Snipes ever do television commercials?

Answer: Yes

When Snipes started in show business, he seemed destined to be a commercial actor. Some of his better known ads were for Levi jeans and Western Union. Fortunately, he went on to star in "White Men Can't Jump" (1992), "Demolition Man" (1993) and "Blade" (1998), just to mention a few.
5. Betty White has had a long and successful career in show business. At one time she was married to a game show emcee. Who was her hubby host?

Answer: Allen Ludden

Betty was married twice before she married Ludden, who hosted the popular game show "Password", in 1963. They remained married until he passed away in 1981. She found a renewed career when cast as Sue Ann Nivens, or "The Happy Homemaker", on the long-running "Mary Tyler Moore Show", and again in the popular shows "Golden Girls" and "Hot in Cleveland".
6. John Rhys-Davies is a noted British character actor. In which of these "Indiana Jones" movies did he have a role?

Answer: "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade"

Davies played Sallah, an Egyptian excavator in two of the "Indiana Jones" movies, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" (1989). In the film he is a good friend, albeit somewhat of a coward, of Indy's and accompanies him on some of his exploits.
7. Frances Fisher started out in television appearing in the daytime dramas "Guiding Light" and "The Edge of Night". In 1991 she had the opportunity to portray which real-life woman?

Answer: Lucille Ball

In the made-for-TV movie "Lucy and Desi: Before the Laughter", she played the legendary comedienne. It was a revealing look at the Arnaz's lives both off and on-screen. Other real people she portrayed were Janet Lee Bouvier Auchincloss, mother of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Baroness Ella van Heemstra, Audrey Hepburn's mother.
8. Ward Bond had a long and successful career in movies and television. He played a priest, Father Lonergan, in the John Wayne vehicle "The Quiet Man" (1952). In which other movie did he play a clergyman?

Answer: China Doll

Bond appeared in numerous moves from the 1930s through the 1950s. Some of his other memorable roles include Bert the cop in "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), Morgan Earp in "My Darling Clementine" (1946) and Petty Officer Dowdy in "Mister Roberts" (1955).

After working decades in motion pictures, Bond moved over to television and played wagon master Seth Adams on the western "Wagon Train". This was his last role. While working on this series, he suffered a heart attack and passed away in November 1960.

In 1958, he played Father Cairns in "China Doll" where a war aviator, played by Victor Mature, finds himself the "owner" of a Chinese housekeeper.
9. Thelma Ritter specialized in playing sardonic, outspoken women in dozens of movies, and in guest appearances on TV shows. On which of these TV shows did she have her last public performance?

Answer: The Jerry Lewis Show

Mainly a movie actress, Thelma also appeared in several TV anthology series such as "Lux Video Theater", "Goodyear Playhouse" and "The United States Steel Hour". Her final public performance was on "The Jerry Lewis Show" in 1968, shortly after which she suffered a fatal heart attack less than ten days before her 67th birthday.
10. Barry Fitzgerald was related to which other actor or actress?

Answer: Arthur Shields

Fitzgerald was the first actor to be nominated for an Academy Award twice for the same role (as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor) for his portrayal of Father Fitzgibbon in "Going My Way" (1944). His actual surname was Shields. He appeared with his younger, somewhat less prominent, brother Arthur in four movies: "The Long Voyage Home" (1940), "How Green Was My Valley" (1941), "The Story of Seabiscuit" (1949) and "The Quiet Man" (1952). Barry passed away in 1961 at age 72, and brother Arthur in 1970 at age 74.
