Born Frances Ethel Gumm in 1922, Garland was an American actress, singer, dancer and all-around performer who was perhaps best-known as Dorothy in the movie "The Wizard of Oz". Garland famously struggled with personal and professional issues throughout her life including addiction and financial troubles. She passed away, already an icon, in 1969 at the age of 47.

9. Helen Mirren

The winner of an Oscar (for "The Queen"), Emmy Awards (for "Prime Suspect"), and a Tony (for "The Audience"), Helen Mirren has long been celebrated as a standout British actress, having worked in film, TV, and theatre since 1965. Born Ilyena Lydia Vasilievna Mironov, the daughter of a Russian diplomat, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in the mid-'60s and performed in Aldwych Theatre in London's West End a decade later.

10. Shania Twain
