Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the appropriately named ghost from the "Mario" series of video games who is sometimes a friend and sometimes an enemy?

Answer: Boo

In most games Boo is an enemy. He is a little white round ghost that often frightens Mario or Luigi. Typically, he cannot be defeated by jumping on him. In some games, Boo will disappear when directly looked at. Boo can also refer to an entire species of ghosts who mostly look the same or similar to each other and whose names are usually some kind of pun on the word "boo". Boos are ruled by King Boo, a giant boo with a crown on his head.

In some games, Boo can be an ally or even a playable character.
2. In Shakespeare's "Hamlet", who first sees the ghost of King Hamlet?

Answer: Bernardo and Marcellus

The Ghost first appears in Act 1 Scene 1 to the two soldiers Bernardo and Marcellus. The Ghost disappears before it can reveal its secret as morning has come. Horatio, whom the soldiers summoned, also sees the Ghost and recognizes it as that of the previous King Hamlet.

The next night, Prince Hamlet sees his father's ghost and it tells him to avenge his death on his murderer: his brother King Claudius who has now married Queen Gertrude.
3. Which of the following is not a recurring character on the animated series "Space Ghost Coast to Coast"?

Answer: Gowron

Gowron is a character from the "Star Trek" franchise.

"Space Ghost Coast to Coast" is an adult cartoon series that is a parody of late night talk shows. Space Ghost hosts an intergalactic guest on his show and the interview usually and quickly turns into some kind of irrelevant tangent. Brak is a cat-like alien and frequent guest on the show. Zorak is the mantis-alien bandleader and Moltar is the lava-covered producer of the show.
4. Which of the following actresses did NOT play one of the leading roles in the 2016 "Ghostbusters" reboot?

Answer: Rose Byrne

The fourth member was Kate McKinnon. The 2016 reboot of the classic film "Ghostbusters" featured a lead cast of four women. Melissa McCarthy played Dr. Abbey Yates, a paranormal researcher. Kristen Wiig was Dr. Erin Gilbert, a physicist. Leslie Jones played Patty, an MTA worker who knew New York City very well. Kate McKinnon played Dr. Jill Holtzmann.

The four women form a team of ghostbusters who investigate the ghostly appearances.
5. Poes are ghosts in which video game series that is primarily set in the land of Hyrule?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda

Poes have a different appearance in almost every Zelda game. However, they almost always carry a lantern. They typically appear in cemeteries, caves and other dark places and usually defeated by using Link's sword or bow and arrow.
6. What is another name for will-o'-the-wisp, the phenomenon of ghostly light or fire appearing in the distance?

Answer: All of these

Ignis fatuus literally means "foolish fire" in English, referring to how if someone approaches the lights, they will be led to danger. Will-o'-the-wisps typically appear in dark outdoor areas like forests and swamps and are sometimes sought out by ghost hunters (who dare not approach them).

Other names for the will-o'-the-wisp are friar's lantern, chir batti (in Asia), spunkey (in Scotland) and treasure lights.
7. Malachi Pearson provided the voice of which friendly ghost in a 1995 film that also starred Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman?

Answer: Casper

Casper, the friendly ghost, originated in comic book form in 1939. Initially, Casper caused some controversy as he was the spirit of a dead child. This was changed in the 1960s when Casper was simply made a spirit being who was never a human. He returned to being the spirit of a child again in the 1995 film "Casper".

In the film, Kat Harvey (Christina Ricci) and her father Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) move into a mansion haunted by Casper and his uncles in order to help a wealthy heiress find the treasure inside as she is too frightened to step in the house.
8. In which form of entertainment would someone most likely use a strategy called ghosting?

Answer: Video games

Ghosting, also sometimes called stealthing, is a video game strategy some players use to progress quickly into a game. The idea is that the player avoids all possible enemies and thus does not waste time fighting them or risk losing the game by being defeated.

In order to ghost, the player must carefully plan their travels and hide behind objects or buildings to avoid being seen by an enemy. Oftentimes, it is not possible for a player to ghost in the beginning of a game because he or she will need to defeat enemies to gain strength and experience or because some enemies are simply unavoidable at the start.
9. What is the name of the classic episode of "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?" that featured the gang in a haunted Confederate mansion while being chased by two green ghosts?

Answer: A Night of Fright is No Delight

In this classic episode, Scooby and the gang travel to a haunted mansion because Scooby is an heir to a Confederate general's fortune along with some of the general's relatives. One by one, the other heirs and heiresses disappear after being paid a visit by a green ghost. Eventually, only Scooby remains.
10. The Jennie Wade House, Sachs Covered Bridge and the Devil's Den are all haunted sites at which popular ghost hunting locale?

Answer: Gettysburg Battlefield

Gettysburg Battlefield, which was the location of a three-day battle during the U.S. Civil War, is popularly believed to be one of the most haunted locations in the United States. Thousands of tourists and ghost hunters flock to Gettysburg each year to be frightened.

The Jennie Wade House is reportedly haunted by Ginnie Wade who was a civilian killed during the battle. The house she died in was actually that of her sister, Georgia McClellan, but it is still known as Jennie Wade House.

Sachs Covered Bridge, which was crossed by both sides during the war, is the location of what people claim to be a battle of ghost soldiers. People have claimed to see what they thought was a Civil War reenactment, only to discover its be ghosts fighting in a heavy fog.

Devil's Den is a rock formation near Gettysburg where sharpshooters were stationed on the second day of the battle. Numerous ghosts have been seen here, especially that of an older soldier wearing torn clothes and no shoes.
