10. How many red triple word squares are there on a standard "Scrabble" board?

Answer: Eight

Scrabble was created in 1938 by the American Alfred Butts. He based it on an earlier game he had invented called Lexico. The game is designed to be played by two to four players. Each player has seven letter tiles and the object of the game is to create words on a 15 x 15 grid board which contains premium squares which multiply the score of the words placed down.

There are 24 "double letter" squares (pale blue), 12 "triple letter" squares (dark blue), 17 "double word squares" (pink or pale red) and eight "triple word" squares (dark red).

The English version of the game has 100 tiles which were based on the frequency analysis of the letters appearing on the front page of the "New York Times". Editions of Scrabble in different languages have different numbers of tiles depending on the frequency of the letters in each particular language.
