Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote the comic strip "Bloom County"?

Answer: Berkeley Breathed

Breathed first started cartooning when he was a student at the University of Texas. His cartoons appeared in the "Daily Texan", called "Academia Waltz". The first "Bloom County" strip appeared on December 8th, 1980.
2. What was the penguin's name in "Bloom County"?

Answer: Opus

Michael Binkley's pet penguin, Opus, has had a varied career through the pages of "Bloom County". He has gone on a heroic mother hunt, been lost in a balloon accident, dreamed of dates with Diane Sawyer, and managed not to be eaten by walruses. He also featured prominently in the "Bloom County" spinoffs, "Outland" and "Opus".
3. "Bloom County" stopped being drawn in August, 1989. What was the name of the spin-off which ran Sundays only, and started a month later?

Answer: Outland

"Outland" featured some of the characters from "Bloom County", including Opus and Bill the Cat, but was set in a different place. It ran for six years. Eight years later, Breathed created another spin-off comic strip, "Opus", which ran until 2008.
4. Not to be confused with that "other" orange cat, what was the cat's name?

Answer: Bill

Bill the Cat was everything that "Garfield" was not - scrawny, disheveled, and non-commercial (despite the best efforts of the other "Bloom County" characters). Bill's signature - and only - phrases are "Ack" and "Thppt".
5. Which of the following was a character in "Bloom County"?

Answer: Steve Dallas

Steve Dallas is a stereotypical frat boy turned lawyer, self-centered, arrogant, with little to recommend him for the first few years of "Bloom County". He did mature when the strip returned to on-line publication.
6. What type of insect was Milquetoast?

Answer: Cockroach

Cockroaches have been part of "Bloom County" since its beginning. Early on there were the revolutionary leftist roaches, getting arms from Nicaragua. Milquetoast appeared later, and carried over into the spin-off cartoon "Outland".
7. What TV news anchor did Opus have a crush on?

Answer: Diane Sawyer

Opus often has rather lurid daydreams which involve Diane Sawyer, herring, and foot massages.
8. What charges were Senator Bedfellow convicted of?

Answer: Trafficking illicit "Bloom County" merchandise

When the disgraced senator was sent to prison, he was greeted by the convicts with "Why Hello, Mr. bring-back-the-death-penalty!"
9. What was Milo's dog's name?

Answer: Rabies

Rabies the basset hound did not continue far into the series of "Bloom County" cartoons. But he shows up on the covers of many of the anthologies, often standing in for Breathed.
10. Who was Binkley's girlfriend?

Answer: Blondie

Michael Binkley's first crush was an African-American girl from California. Binkley once asked her if he kissed "like a gagging goldfish", which might have been easier to answer if they had ever kissed.
11. "Bloom County" ceased being published in 1989. When did it start up again as an online-only comic?

Answer: 2015

Breathed started creating new strips on the "Bloom County" facebook page in 2015. The first new strip to appear came out July 13th, 2015.
12. Michael Binkley has an unusual feature in his bedroom. What is it?

Answer: An Anxiety Closet

Things which have come out of Binkley's Anxiety Closet include the Purple-Spotted Snorklewacker who acts as the master of ceremonies, various economists arguing over the deficit and the librarian (who is dressed as a Viking and carries a bloody headsman's axe while telling him his book is "137 weeks overdue").
13. What was the name of the Bloom County newspaper?

Answer: The Bloom Picayune

Milo Bloom and Opus both work for the Picayune from time to time. Opus edits the "Personals" section, while Milo writes headlines, editorials, and news. The harried editor in chief is Van Overbeek who seems overwhelmed by the job.
14. "Bloom County" features an unusual animal which is a cross between a basset hound and an antelope. Her name is "Rosebud", what is her species?

Answer: Basselope

Rosebud looks like a horned basset hound. She can fly if she inflates her antlers with helium or something called "dandelion gas".
15. The online version of "Bloom County" sometimes incorporates characters from what other beloved cartoon strip into its storylines?

Answer: Calvin and Hobbes

In a series from late 2021, Opus and the rest of the "Bloom County" cast find Hobbes who is without Calvin, and is trying to get back home. Only with the help of the trusty Banana 6000 are they able to find the right Calvin and reunite the two.
