Beloved Characters From Bloom County Quiz

Back when newspapers were very prevalent, I used to race to grab the Sunday morning comic section. And I would turn to one of my favorites called "Bloom County". It ran from 1980 to 1989. Can you pick out the characters from the list?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

- Opus the Penguin is arguably the most famous character from Berke Breathed's comic strip "Bloom County". He is a black and white penguin with a huge nose, a red bow tie, and a nervous and loveable personality. He is sweet, kind, and is often confused about what is happening around him.

- Bill the Cat is a scruffy orange cat with bulging eyes and terrible hygiene. He usually is seen coughing up hairballs or shouting his famous "Ack!". Despite being brain dead and frequently heavily medicated, Bill manages to achieve different roles over time, serving as a heavy metal rock star, a televangelist, and even a radical political candidate.

- Milo Bloom is the cynical ten year old boy who serves as the central anchor (and partial namesake) of the comic strip. He is very smart and curious and often acts as a newspaper reporter or commentator on the weird events that are occurring. He looks at the world with a heavy dose of skepticism, perfectly balancing Opus's innocence and Bill the Cat's craziness.

- Steve Dallas is a loud and arrogant lawyer. He is a self-proclaimed ladies' man and dons dark aviator sunglasses. He thinks he is very cool, even when most characters around him would disagree. Steve constantly chases women, avoids all responsibilities, and gets himself into some interesting predicaments.
- Binkley is an imaginative child who is also very nervous. He is famous for dragging around his enormous anxiety closet, which supposedly contains all the fears and worries of life. In this closet are stresses such as monsters to politics. As Opus's closest human friend and roommate, Binkley shares the penguin's sweet innocence.

- Oliver Wendell Jones is an African-American child prodigy and brilliant computer hacker. He invents futuristic machines and solves complicated problems. He also gets into scrapes such as hacking into the New York Stock Exchange and the Soviet Union's nuclear defense system. He wears large classes and has a calm and logical manner about him.

- Cutter John is a Vietnam veteran who uses a wheelchair. He acts like a calm and wise friend, especially to Opus. He is intelligent and grounded but also adventerous. He is famously the commander of the "U.S.S. Enterprise", which is actually just his wheelchair pushed to very fast speeds through the neighborhood by Opus and Bill the Cat.

- Portnoy is a grumpy, fiercely opinionated groundhog who spends most of his time being deeply intolerant of anything different from himself. He is a staunch, close-minded conservative who constantly rants against changing times and modern culture, despite barely understanding any of it. He discusses all of this with exaggerated seriousness (usually in the midst of absolute chaos).

- Milquetoast is a giant, extremely polite cockroach who lives behind the baseboards of the Bloom house. He lives up to his name, as he is shy and timid and he avoids risks. However, he comes across as upper crust in contradiction to his reputation as a household pest. He is often seen discussing philosophy or literature.

- Hodge-Podge is a rabbit-like pet. He is small and hyperactive. He is a fiercely outspoken, right-wing political character who sees sinister conspiracies everywhere. He also behaves in strange ways and will often run away in terror from the very things he rants about. He is usually seen in the strip hanging out with his buddy, Portnoy.

- Odie and Pooky are from the "Garfield" comic strip.
- Larry the Crocodile is from "Pearls Before Swine".
- Pigpen is from "Peanuts".
- Dogbert is from "Dilbert".
