Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Early one morning I took Coco the dog for a walk. It was still dark and the moon was low in the sky. The moon can appear to change colours, and the one we saw was the same colour as a buttercup. What colour is that?

Answer: Yellow

Depending on the time of the month, or how high or low it is in the sky, the moon can appear to be different colours and shapes; sometimes we can see only part of it, other times we can see much more.

The moon can take on different colours. They include bright yellow and white - some people say the white looks more like silver and there is a song that goes: "By the light of the silvery moon..." that was written over 100 years ago and a movie of the same name was made more than 60 years ago.

Buttercups are tiny little flowers that grow among grass. Many people who like gardens do not like buttercups because they can take over the entire lawn. You should never eat buttercups because they will make you very sick.
2. It was so early when I took the beautiful dog Coco for her walkies one morning that frost was still on the grass. What colour does frost appear to be?

Answer: White

Frost usually appears when it is very cold. Sometimes it is so cold that the wet dew that lies on the grass and other surfaces freezes.

Depending on how cold it is, frost can be just a little bit brittle, or it can be very harsh.
3. Walking with Coco the beautiful dog one morning, I saw a little bird called a robin scampering on the ground. Robins have very colourful feathers on their fronts. What colour are these feathers?

Answer: Red

You may sometimes hear people calling them 'robin redbreasts'.

Robins are very small, but many of them are quite used to humans and will not scamper away until you get very close.

At Christmas time, you often see robins on Christmas cards with lots of snow around, but robins appear in the wild all year long.
4. On our morning walk, Coco the clever dog and I have to cross a busy road. Sometimes we have to wait for the crossing light to change. What colour tells us when it is safe to cross?

Answer: Green

Where we live the lights show a red man standing still when it is not safe to cross and a green man walking when it is safe.

In other places there are different figures on the lights, but generally red means do not cross.

If you go to to a factory where things are made, you may see machines that have red lights on when they are working to indicate danger. These change to green when it is safe.
5. Sometimes on our morning walks, we meet Coco's friend Mia. Mia is a husky and she has one brown eye and one of a different colour. The other colour is the same as a clear sky; what is it?

Answer: Blue

The first huskies came from Siberia, which is in Russia and is very cold in the winter. Huskies have thick coats to keep them warm.

Huskies are friendly when they meet other dogs and people. They do need a lot of exercise and if you get one, make sure you have a very secure yard because they like to go wandering.
6. Among the birds that are often to be seen when I take Coco the clever canine for her morning walkies are magpies. What colours are magpies?

Answer: Black and white

Not everyone likes magpies, despite their lovely colours. Magpies are very intelligent and will eat just about anything. They are also great thieves and like to steal jewellery or other shiny things they see. When two magpies get together, they stay together from the rest of their lives.

There are several kinds of magpies in different parts of the world and some have different looks to others but all are black and white when seen from a distance. Up close you can see some tiny changes in colour.
7. When we are out walkies, Coco the doggie likes to run in the grass in the big park near our home. What colour is grass usually?

Answer: Green

Millions of years ago when dinosaurs roamed our world, they ate grass.

There are many types of grass - 12,000 in all - and they can be found the world over in places that are not covered in snow and ice all year around.

In many places grass is very important for feeding cattle and sheep and other animals. It is also good for lawns in our gardens and the sports fields we play on.
8. When I was walking with Coco the doggie we saw a traffic cone floating in the duck pond. Traffic cones often come in bright colours to warn of danger. The one we saw was the same colour as a piece of fruit whose name is also a colour of the rainbow. What was it?

Answer: Orange

Traffic cones are usually made of plastic and they are used to close off roads from traffic while work is being done.

Someone told me there are 140 million traffic cones in the world. If they were all lined up for you to count, at one second for every cone it would take you 1,620 days - that is almost four and a half years!

If you have ever read "Guinness World Records", you may have seen that a man in England has 500 different types of cones.

In the USA, the city of Seattle has a traffic cone monument that is 548cm (18 feet) high.

9. One day when I went walkies with Coco the doggie, we had to stop while a man carried bags of coal from his lorry into a house. What colour is coal?

Answer: Black

It takes millions of years to produce the coal we see today. Coal is a kind of rock that was formed when dead plants decayed.

Although it has been around for a very long time, it was only about 300 years ago that people started to use coal to make steam power and electricity.

Around 60 years ago, coal produced most of the electricity in places like the USA and Europe. People also burned coal in fires to heat their homes.

But coal is very dirty and produces a lot of pollution that can harm us and our planet. In many countries coal is no longer used as much as it used to be to make electricity. Some people would like to end coal mining altogether but it will take many years for this to happen. In the meantime, some scientists are working on ways to make coal less harmful to our planet.
10. Sometimes it can be hard to see Coco the doggie among the trees when it is dark. Her coat is the same colour as a sweet treat a lot of people like to eat. Which of these colours do you think Coco is?

Answer: Chocolate brown

Some people do eat peppermint, but it is not usually pink. Not many people eat grass - or canaries. Dogs do eat grass to settle their stomachs.

Coco is a labrador: a chocolate labrador. Chocolate is a popular snack the whole world over, but people can eat too much of it and maybe they should try a more healthy snack instead. Chocolate made for humans is bad for dogs and you should only feed them special doggie chocolate.

Labradors were first seen in Canada and nowadays they come in three colours, brown, golden, and black. The first labradors were golden - some people call them yellow - and black and brown labradors followed.

Labradors are very intelligent dogs and are easily trained. That is why you may notice many of them on the streets guiding people who cannot see very well. They are also very friendly dogs and are one of the most popular dogs in many countries.

Labradors like children a lot, but I would not let Coco eat a whole one.
