Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these fruits is red when ripe and ready to eat?

Answer: Strawberries

Strawberries grow on small plants in the ground, and start off as green fruit before they ripen to a bright red colour. Interestingly, strawberries are part of the rose family. Strawberries are also the only fruit that has its seeds on the outside.
2. What type of animal is Clifford, the famous big red character from books?

Answer: A dog

These books, which follow the adventures of a giant red dog called Clifford, and his owner Emily Elizabeth, have been around for a long time. The first book was published in 1963, written by Normal Bridwell. There are many books in the Clifford series. The 77th book was released in 2011!
3. Now you would know that humans have red blood. But do ALL animals have red blood?

Answer: No

Many animals (especially mammals) share the human color of blood, but some don't. For example, some lizards have green blood, lobsters have blue blood, and some beetles have yellow blood. The colour of blood is usually caused by the other elements in the body. Humans have lots of iron in our blood, which colours it red.
4. When an important or famous person arrives somewhere, there's a phrase about rolling out something red to welcome them. What kind of red thing is it?

Answer: Carpet

It has been a tradition of the Academy Awards (film awards) to welcome famous Hollywood people with the red carpet, but it began long before this. A Greek play written in 458 BC by an ancient Greek playwright (Aeschylus) talks about a famous person walking on the red carpet.
5. Where does the colour red appear in a rainbow?

Answer: On the very outside

Red always appears on the outside of a rainbow because it has the longest wavelength that the human eye can see. Isaac Newton, a famous scientist, was the first to identify the seven main colours of a rainbow in order as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet (which you can remember by their first letters as ROY G BIV).
6. Which of these gemstones is well known for most commonly being red?

Answer: Ruby

Interestingly, there is a form of red emerald, but this is very rare and found only in Utah. The most common emeralds are green. Red diamonds have also been found, but are also very rare.
7. Which of these 'red' names is a charity?

Answer: Red Cross

The Red Cross (called the Red Crescent in some countries) works in many countries and in 2013 had almost 100 million volunteers working for them! Red Book is a website that helps you work out which car to buy; Red Bubble sells t-shirts; and Red Ball is a video game.
8. A red-eye flight is one where you travel on a plane during the time most people are asleep.

Answer: True

Red-eye flights are called this because they often make you tired as you are in a plane during your normal sleeping hours. Many countries have red-eye flights and they are often cheaper to buy tickets for because of the time they take off and land.
9. Which of these is NOT a real animal?

Answer: Red rabbit

There are resaurants and even a book called 'red rabbit' but there is no animal with that name. There are many animals throughout the world with colours in their names as they help describe what the animal looks like.
10. Can dogs see the colour red the same way that humans do?

Answer: No

Dogs can't see the same range of colours as us humans. They can see some colours, including yellow and blue. But the colour red to them appears as a darker shade (of grey or blue).
