Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'm a domestic sheep. What is my binominal name, the name that scientists call me by?

Answer: Ovis aries

All sheep are bovids, members of the Bovidae family. Bos Taurus is the binominal name for a cow, Equus caballus is the binominal name for a horse, and Alces alces is the binominal name for a moose.
2. I live with a group of sheep. What would you call my group?

Answer: a flock or a mob

"Ewe" is a common term for a female sheep. A pod is usually a group of whales or dolphins, and a murder is a group of crows.
3. Earlier I told you I was a lamb. What does this mean?

Answer: I'm a baby

The word for a male sheep, intact, would be a ram. A female sheep would be called an ewe.
4. As a sheep, what is my coat called?

Answer: wool

My wool keeps me warm in the winter. My wool is full of a special grease called lanolin.
5. Why might my name, Romney, have to do with sheep?

Answer: Romney is a breed of sheep.

Other kinds of sheep include Merino, Rambouillet and Lincoln. I am a Romney sheep named Romney. My wool is tan in color.
6. If you looked all around the world, where might you not find me and my friends?

Answer: Antarctica

Of course, other sheep and I eat grass, we can't live in Antarctica! Places like China, Australia and Europe have lots of grass for us to snack on.
7. The other sheep and I are getting pretty hungry! What might we want to eat?

Answer: grass

The other sheep and I sometimes travel in flocks, eating grass. Travelling together makes it more difficult for the mean animals that want to eat us to get us!
8. It is difficult for my sheep friends and I to recognize each other's faces.

Answer: False

If it were, how would I keep track of my family and friends? I can recognize up to 50 other sheep and know their same faces for at least two years.
9. The other sheep and I certainly do not want to be eaten! Which of these animals would we want to avoid?

Answer: all of these animals could eat us

Even animals such as domestic dogs could eat us. We stick together to avoid being eaten.
10. Being a sheep, what qualities am I likely to possess?

Answer: gregarious and precocial

We sheep are gregarious in the sense that we like to stick together in order to stay safe from predators. We are precocial in that we are very independent right from birth, not taking very long to walk.
