Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To where does Alice's family move?

Answer: Scotland

Alice's dad gets a new job with a Scottish firm, so the family plan to move up there from England, where they can have a bigger house and a large garden. The house is in the countryside. As far as Gemma's concerned, Scotland is so far away that Alice may well have been moving to "Timbuktu. Or the Gobi Desert. Or Mars."
2. Alice and Gemma have known each other all of their lives - they were even born on the same day!

Answer: True

The girls were both born on July 3, Gemma at 6am, and Alice at 4pm. Their mothers met while in the hospital, and Gemma and Alice were brought up together as best friends - they went to the same school before Alice moved away.
3. What is Gemma's dog called?

Answer: Barking Mad

Gemma's elder brother Jack likes to spend time with Barking Mad. When he was still a puppy, Alice and Gemma tried to train him to do tricks - he could hold out his paw and shake it. Gemma got the idea of training him to be a "performing Wonder Dog"; however, when Barking Mad hit his teenage years, he stopped doing tricks (except he'd rarely shake his paw when bribed).
4. Whose idea is it for Gemma and Alice to run away to London?

Answer: Alice

Surprisingly, it is actually Alice's idea! During the leaving party, the girls are hiding in Alice's wardrobe, playing a make-believe story where they live forever in the wardrobe and send out Alice's teddy bear, Golden Syrup, out to get syrup sandwiches for them to live on.

When Gemma says they couldn't possibly do it for real, Alice says "Well, let's run away then, before they find us!" Of course, Gemma is blamed instead.
5. What does Gemma's grandad frequently let her do when she stays at his house, much to her mother's dismay?

Answer: Eat lots before dinner

Grandad normally gives Gemma iced gems, which are little biscuits with icing on top. He even calls Gemma his little "Iced Gem". In chapter 8, Gemma is very sad about Alice leaving, but is cheered up when Grandad gives her a big box of cream cakes to choose from! Her mum gets suspicious when Gemma is not hungry at dinner time - because, well, Gemma is always hungry at dinner time!
6. Who does Gemma pretend to be when she calls Alice's house?

Answer: Francesca Gilmore-Brown

Francesca Gilmore-Brown is a girl in Alice's ballet class, whom Gemma hates. Alice doesn't like her much either, but Alice's mother think it's amazing that "a posh rich girl like Francesca wanted to be Alice's friend". Gemma pretends to be someone else because she's "in disgrace" with Alice's family because of them running away.

She gets caught out when Alice accidentally calls her "Gemma" instead of "Francesca".
7. About whom do Gemma and Biscuits do their school project?

Answer: TV chef Fat Larry

Gemma is paired with Billy McVitie, nicknamed Biscuits (because of the British biscuit manufacturer McVitie's), for their Famous Person school project. Gemma pretends to be bitter with Biscuits as he is the one who told the parents about Gemma and Alice running away. Gemma wants to do the project on Michael Owen but changes her mind when Biscuits suggests they can cook food for the presentation.
8. What new name does Flora, Alice's new friend, give to the doll Melissa?

Answer: Rosebud

Melissa is an antique doll that belonged to Gemma's grandma. Gemma gave the doll to Alice for fear she herself would ruin it. Of course, Gemma's parents were furious! Flora has given Melissa a different dress, and a different name to go with it, unaware that Gemma was the one who gave the doll to Alice in the first place. Flora and Gemma don't like each other at all, especially as Flora makes fun of Gemma's pretend games.
9. Why does Gemma throw the birthday cake in Flora's face?

Answer: Flora cut the cake first to get the wish

When Gemma visited Alice, the Hamiltons, Flora's family, were invited for dinner. Gemma had brought the birthday cake she had made with Biscuits for herself and Alice - however, Flora is allowed to cut the cake first, despite Gemma's protests that the wish is for her and Alice only. Flora cuts it anyway, and, of course, Gemma overreacts as usual, picking up the cake and throwing it in Flora's face!
10. Do Alice and Gemma remain friends at the end of the book?

Answer: Yes

Yes, of course they do! However, Alice is not supposed to contact Gemma any more, after what she did to Flora with the cake! Gemma has made good friends with Biscuits, and accepts that Alice will have other "everyday" friends, but that Gemma will always be her best friend. With permission of her father, Alice sends a special package to Gemma on their birthday, containing Alice's charm bracelet, which Gemma always loved.

There is a new charm though - a silver heart with the words "Best Friends For Ever".
