Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of the story, Judy is at home in Canada. Who suggests that Judy should go to school in England?

Answer: Mr Bolland

Mr Bolland is Judy's godfather. He offers to send Judy to a good school in England.

The other answers are all characters from the book. Mollie Carey is Judy's sister; Mrs Corrie is the woman who accompanies Judy on the ship crossing to England; Sylvia Burton is the sister of Mr Bolland and she looks after Judy when she arrives in England.
2. Into which dormitory is Judy placed?

Answer: Bird

All the choices are the names of dormitories at St Ronan's School.

The Charles II room would appear to be Senior School dormitory, occupied by Fifth Form girls. Bird, Butterfly and Tree are Middle School dormitories. Bird is accepted as the prettiest room.
3. What accident happens on Judy's first night at school?

Answer: She breaks a vase

The vase is a valuable piece of Sevres china. It is one of a pair that Muriel Wilcox has brought to school. Judy has carried them upstairs for Muriel during unpacking, but one of them slips and falls onto the hard dormitory floor. This causes Muriel to be angry with Judy for most of the book.
4. After her enrollment, which Patrol does Judy join?

Answer: Daffodil

There are vacancies in the Wren and Daffodil patrols. Judy is thrilled to join Daffodil because her friends are in this patrol.
5. On Parent's Day most of the girls get to go out for the day with a relative. Judy is taken out by her brother Denis, a student at Oxford. Which dormitory member stays at school?

Answer: Swanhild Anderssen

Swanhild is Norwegian. Her only relatives in England are her sisters who are at school with her. They joke half-heartedly about asking their father to have their brother Trygve transfer from Copenhagen to Oxford University, so that they will have someone to take them out on holidays.
6. Where are the girls when they hear that Miss Matthew's prized miniature has been broken?

Answer: Country Dancing

Miss Matthews keeps the girls behind after they have been Country Dancing and asks if anyone has been into her room.

The girls are shocked to discover that the miniature was broken, especially as this happens shortly after Muriel finds her second vase has been smashed.

Muriel puts the blame on Judy.
7. Apart from the day that her brother comes to take her out, how does Judy spend most of Half Term?

Answer: Reading

There are a few girls who spend all or part of half-term at school. All the given choices are activities that the girls enjoy.

However, Muriel ensures that Judy isn't welcome to take part in any of the activities. So, Judy sits on her own and reads Kipling, unless a Mistress turns up when she is permitted to join in the fun.
8. In order to settle the question of whether or not Judy broke the second vase, a Guide Court of Honour is held. What is the outcome?

Answer: The Guides cannot agree a verdict

Judy states, on her Guide honour, that she did not break the vase. However some of the Guides think that because Judy isn't English, and because she is a new Guide, that she doesn't understand the meaning of 'honour' and so cannot believe her.

The Guide captain, Miss Carthew, is very disappointed with their attitude.
9. At the end of the hockey match against Heyworth College, who is knocked unconscious?

Answer: Nancy Redmond

Madge, Joan ad Muriel are all playing for St Ronan's. Nancy is a spectator.
Just before the end of the match, Muriel blocks an attempt at goal by Heywood College and hits the ball hard to knock it away. The ball hits Nancy on the side of her head and knocks her out.
10. Finally, Judy is proven innocent of all the misdeeds of which she has been accused. The actual culprit is shown to have done all but which of these things?

Answer: Put the Fifth Form books into Lost Property

A little Third-Former, Celia Dacres, admits to putting the books into Lost Property. She wanted to get Judy into trouble because she thought it would please Muriel.

If you want to find out who the real culprit is - who it is who smashed the vase, and the miniature, and who stole the Arithmetic exam paper, as well as other misdeeds....well, I won't spoil the story for you! You'll have to read the book yourself to find out!
