Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A whole race of creatures, introduced in "Goblet of Fire", disappeared from the film. One of these was one of Fleur Delacour's grandmothers. Which race is this?

Answer: Veela

Veela are human-like, magical creatures that usually seem female, young, beautiful and blonde. They were introduced at the Quidditch World Cup as the entertainment provided by the Bulgarians. When upset and angry, their true nature is revealed and they become ugly, sharp toothed monsters.
2. Which Hogwarts professor, who had the distinction of being the only teacher who was a ghost, disappeared from the films?

Answer: Binns

Professor Binns was very old when he died in his chair in the staff room. That did not prevent him from getting up the next day to go and teach his History of Magic class. This was explained in the first Harry Potter book of the series and the professor appeared in each book up until Harry's O.W.L. year.
3. What was the name of the second house elf to be named in the "Harry Potter" books, but they did not appear in the films?

Answer: Winky

Winky was the house elf belonging to Barty Crouch. She was given clothes by him, i.e. sacked, immediately after the Quidditch World Cup final. Later she joined Dobby (the first named house elf) at Hogwarts. Winky did not appear in the films and her role as care giver for Barty Crouch junior was overlooked.

The only other named house elves in the series were Kreacher, who was owned by the Black family and Hokey, the house elf of Hepzibah Smith.
4. At the Quidditch World Cup, Harry Potter met two "Unspeakables" who were not seen in the films. What were their names?

Answer: Bode and Croaker

Members of the Department of Mysteries at the Ministry of Magic were known as "Unspeakables". This was because nobody outside of the department knew exactly what they did in there.
5. All mention of a wizard named Fabian disappeared from the film version of "The Deathly Hallows", because Harry did not get to celebrate his seventeenth birthday. Who was Fabian?

Answer: Molly Weasley's brother

Fabian Prewett, Molly Weasley's brother, was murdered by Death Eaters. Tradition has it that wizards were presented with a gold watch on attaining their majority, i.e. reaching seventeen. In the book, Molly presented Harry with her brother's watch at his birthday party, held at The Burrow.
6. After Scabbers the rat returned to his former master, Ron was given an owl by Sirius Black, but this did not happen in the films. What name was given to the owl by Ginny?

Answer: Pigwidgeon

Ron did not like the name that Ginny gave his tiny owl, but Pigwidgeon refused to answer to another name. The name was usually shortened to "Pig".

Sirius used the owl to send a message to Harry on the Hogwarts Express. In the P.S. he suggested that Ron may like to keep the owl as he (Sirius) had been the cause of Ron losing his pet rat.
7. Not many muggles were named in the books, but two that were did not appear in the films. What were the names of the two camping site owners at the Quidditch World Cup?

Answer: Roberts and Payne

When the Weasleys, Harry, Hermione and the Diggorys arrived by portkey at the Quidditch World Cup, they were directed to the sites of Mr Roberts and Mr Payne.

Mr Roberts, along with his wife and two small children, were later tortured for fun by the Death Eaters.
8. In the books there were male students from Beauxbaton Academy and female students from Durmstrang Institute.

Answer: True

In the film series, both Beauxbaton and Durmstrang appeared to be single sex schools. At the Yule Ball in the book "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", the Patil twins deserted Harry and Ron for boys from Beauxbaton.

I am in the middle of re-reading the Harry Potter books and was surprised to find mention of female Durmstrang students. No names were given, but they were mentioned as being members of the party of students that arrived just prior to Halloween.
9. What was the name of the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports who helped to arrange both the Quidditch World Cup and the Tri-wizard Tournament in the books, but not the films?

Answer: Ludo Bagman

Ludo Bagman was once a highly successful Quidditch player. He had been a beater for the Wimbourne Wasps and had also played for England. Unfortunately, he had a gambling problem and got into trouble with Goblins, and had to disappear.
10. One character appeared in every book of the Harry Potter series, but none of the films. Mostly he was just a nuisance, upsetting humans and ghosts alike. Which character redeemed himself in the final book of the series?

Answer: Peeves

Peeves was a poltergeist. Harry and his fellow first year students encountered him on their first day at Hogwarts when he was dropping walking sticks on them. As usual, Neville Longbottom came off worst in the encounter. At the battle for Hogwarts, Peeves finally stopped playing the fool and put his talents to real use.

Severus Snape and Potter also appear in every book, but they are also in the films too.
