Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which one of the books did Percy's mother die?

Answer: Percy's mother never died

Alright, let me clarify. Just because someone is forcibly removed from the living world and transported to the land of the dead by the god of dead people, DOESN'T mean they're dead. Seems strange, huh? What actually happened was that Hades kidnapped her (and saved her from a painful death by the Minotaur) as a hostage, in order to bargain with Percy.
2. In "The Battle of the Labyrinth," who killed the monster Kampe?

Answer: Briares

I thought of a good way to commit suicide. Just attack a green monster with tigers, bears, snakes and even a dragon growing out of her body. Oh, and make sure she has her two giant poisonous swords, that will give you the honor of shriveling slowly to dust before you die.

This is a pretty sure way to die... unless you're a huge giant with a hundred arms - then you could just throw a bunch of rocks at Kampe (cause that's who this creepy green animal-type-thing is) and she'll go bye-bye. Which is exactly what Briares, the last Hundred-Handed one, does to save Percy and Annabeth from Kampe.
3. Who were Prometheus's escorts when he came on a diplomatic mission to talk with Percy in "The Last Olympian"?

Answer: Ethan Nakamura, a Hyperborean giant and a empousa demon

Get your monsters from Greek Mythology straight, people! Well, not that it matters that much - if you ever have the misfortune to meet a dracaenae, an empousa, a Laistrygonian giant or a Hyperborean giant, it probably won't matter to you what they all are - you'll most likely be dead before you have time to examine them.

But if you're curious - Laistrygonians are described as being eight feet tall with wild eyes, pointy teeth, and hairy arms tattooed with snakes, hula women, and some adorable valentine hearts. Empousa can change their appearance to pretty teenage girls, but don't be fooled - in reality, they'll drink your blood after seducing you.

A dracaenae is a reptilian monster with snakes for legs. And a Hyperborean giant is a blue-skinned creature of ice who'll freeze into a giant ice-cube if you stab him.
4. In what book was Tyson claimed by Poseidon?

Answer: The Sea of Monsters

Hey, imagine you're one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Your son, a mere mortal, manages to save the world as well as your own backside. You gambled your honor on him, and he didn't let you down. What's a good reward? Oh, I have a good idea - give him a monster for a brother! This is pretty much what Poseidon does in 'The Sea of Monsters'. You can't blame Percy for feeling a little resentful....
5. In what book did Annabeth first kiss Percy on the lips?

Answer: The Battle of the Labyrinth

There is an unwritten law of action novels (and don't even get me started on the movies) that first kisses HAVE to happen at the most dramatic moment possible. So when your crush is about to go and probably get himself killed in a mountain full of monsters, there isn't a doubt that you'll kiss him then. And so, surprisingly enough, when Percy convinces Annabeth to leave him alone in Mount St.

Helens, Annabeth kisses him for the first time. I sure didn't see that coming!
6. What was Grover's girlfriend's name?

Answer: Juniper

Have you ever thought that a piece of nature - for instance, a juniper tree - is really, really gorgeous? Well, if you're a regular human, than that just means you're appreciating nature. But if you're a satyr? Then I'd be entitled to start singing, "Grover and a tree, sitting in another tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!" Alright, I know that sounds strange, but that rhyme wasn't intended for this scenario.
7. In "The Battle of the Labyrinth," who decided that Daedalus's time was up, and got him killed?

Answer: Daedalus himself

Have you ever felt your life kinda sucks? Well, imagine how it would feel for a two-thousand year old man who's lost his son and killed his nephew, and who has to hide in an underground labyrinth in order to escape a dead king's fury. The guilt would be enough to overcome almost anyone.

Then imagine that this man realizes that killing himself might save the world, because if he dies, his underground labyrinth would collapse, killing a ton of monsters and keeping Camp Half-Blood safe. Um, I don't know about you, but I'd be inclined to just end it right there if it was me... which is what Daedalus does.
8. What is Thalia's last name?

Answer: Grace

It's great to have a good relationship with your parents. Percy isn't like most half-bloods in this regard - he's on great terms with his mortal mom. Annabeth, Luke and Thalia aren't so lucky. Grace is Thalia's mother's surname, but she doesn't use it because she wants to cut all ties with her mother.

When Prometheus calls her Thalia Grace, Percy speculates that it makes her seem less powerful. Who said a daughter's relationship with her mom is unbreakable?
9. Who was the first monster that Percy kills in the series? (Well, technically you can't kill monsters, but you know what I mean - making someone disintegrate into yellow dust classifies as killing in my dictionary)

Answer: The Fury Alecto

There's one thing worse than your father stalking you - your uncle stalking you. Especially when your uncle - who happens to be the god of the dead - isn't totally averse to killing you. In "The Lightning Thief," Hades sets the Fury (a kind of monster-servant for Hades) Alecto on Percy, disguised as his math teacher. Whether Percy stabs her because he got an F on his latest quiz or because his life depended on it, we'll never know.
10. Which one of the following is a child of Hestia?

Answer: Hestia hasn't had any kids

Hestia, like Artemis and Hera, has no children. She is the goddess of the hearth, and while she used to be an Olympian, she gave up her throne to Dionysus in order to avoid a fight between the gods. Make no mistake, though - she may be one of the least powerful gods in some regards, but she can still burn you to cinders if you mess with her.
