Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these colors is a "non-spectral" color? (Hint: You cannot find it in a rainbow).

Answer: White

Grayscale colors such as white, black and gray are considered non-spectral colors. Also, colors obtained by mixing grayscale and other colors are also considered non-spectral. For example, the color pink is made by mixing red with white. Other non-spectral colors include many purple colors that are mixtures of violet and red.
2. What mnemonic device can be used to remember the orders of the colors in the rainbow?

Answer: Roy G. Biv

A mnemonic device is a memory tool that allows a person to remember important facts. For instance, "Never Eat Shredded Wheat" can help a person remember the North-East-South-West points of the compass. HOMES is a mnemonic for the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, & Superior). My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles helps remember the order of the planets from the sun(Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, & Neptune). Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is essential for students to remember the order in which one must perform math functions (Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction). Roy G. Biv refers to the spectrum colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Biv is also the Hebrew word for sewer-pipe! Strange but true.
3. What color is made when all of the spectrum colors of the rainbow are combined?

Answer: White

When all of the colors within sunlight are combined they make up the color white. However, when the light is broken up, or refracted, we are able to see the beautiful colors of the rainbow. Refraction happens when light travels from one medium (like in air) into another (like water of the raindrops).
4. What color makes up the outer edge of the rainbow?

Answer: Red

Light has different wavelengths. The red and orange colors are long light waves and appear on the outside of the rainbow when a shaft of sunlight is refracted entering and leaving a raindrop.
5. What color makes up the inner edge of a rainbow?

Answer: Violet

Just as the reds and oranges have long wavelengths, the blue to violet colors have short wavelengths and can be found on the inner-most edge of the rainbow. When light and water meet on a beautiful sunny day a rainbow often forms. The higher we are off the ground the more of a rainbow circle we can see. In an airplane at a high altitude, a rainbow might look like a complete circle with the plane's shadow in the center.
6. Which color of the rainbow is frequently associated with war and strangely love?

Answer: Red

It is true that red is frequently associated with passion, anger, love, and war. The obvious reason for this is the symbolism of the color of blood. In Chinese culture, many people wear red for luck and wearing a red ruby is believed to bring long life and prosperity. In other cultures, red also has been attributed to beauty, strength, energy, courage, power, and love.
7. Which is the only color in the spectrum taken directly from a fruit?

Answer: Orange

The citrus fruit "the orange" also gives us the second spectral color of the rainbow. The word itself comes from the Old French word "orenge." Similar to the evergreen and everbearing nature of the fruit tree, the color orange is associated with fruitfulness. Many cultures use the color orange to represent fire, energy, excitement, adventure, success, justice, and endurance.
8. Close your eyes and think of forests and meadows. What is the natural rainbow color that most people will see in the mind?

Answer: Green

Green is considered a peaceful, spring-like, natural color. It has been considered a representation of rebirth, freshness, fertility, and renewal. In many eastern cultures, the color green is associated with harmony, growth, abundance, and healing. In Celtic mythology the Green Man was the God of Fertility. In Egyptian culture, green was sacred and represented the hope and joy of Spring. A strange statistic is that suicides from London's Blackfriar Bridge dropped by 34% after it was painted green.
9. Since Roman times, which color of the rainbow has been attached to royalty and was frequently worn by Kings and military leaders?

Answer: Violet

The violet and purple hued colors are rare in nature and the darker purples imply wealth, prestige, and status. The word purple is derived from the Greek porphura which is a shellfish that yields a special dye called Tyrian Purple. This dye was very expensive to produce and thus was only used in manufacturing robes and clothing for royalty and other high-ranking officials.

In many cultures, the violet and purple colors symbolize passion, leadership, success, wisdom, and even psychic ability.
10. Which color is considered to be one of the most soothing colors of the rainbow and is frequently used in heraldry with the name azure?

Answer: Blue

After the color red, blue is considered to be the most powerful of the spectral colors and is one of the three primary colors (the other two being red and yellow). The color blue has been associated with health, truth, healing, hope, friendship, creativity, calmness, patience, knowledge, loyalty, and peace. It has been used since the 13th century to describe a color of the spectrum and in Christianity is used in symbolic representations for Mary and the Advent season.
