Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This red, white and blue flag belongs to a country which was once part of Yugoslavia, and where you'd find Dubrovnik. Which of these is it?

Answer: Croatia

The country of Yugoslavia only existed from 1918 until 1991 and included Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, but not Albania. The countries became independent in 1991. Croatia's flag has its coat of arms in the middle.
2. This flag belongs to which Spanish speaking island country, the largest in the Caribbean?

Answer: Cuba

Cuba was colonised by Spanish settlers, led by Christopher Columbus, in 1492. It declared itself an independent country in 1868 and became fully independent in 1902. The flag was adopted the same year, although it had been designed over fifty years earlier.
3. Although this low-lying European country has a monarchy called the House of Orange, its flag is red, white and blue. Which of these countries is it?

Answer: Netherlands

An older version of the flag, called the Prince's Flag, did exist in the sixteenth century with an orange band at the top. In 1596, red replaced orange and the flag has been used ever since. The Netherlands is known for being flat, and is prone to flooding.
4. This flag is unique in its design and belongs to a country where you can find the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. Which country does it belong to?

Answer: Nepal

Nepal is situated mostly in the Himalayas, with its capital city, Kathmandu, being the main centre for culture and tourism. Mount Everest lies on Nepal's border with China's Tibet region. The flag in the picture dates from 1962, with the previous version being very similar, but with faces on the moon and sun.
5. Known as the Tricolore, and dating from a revolution which began in 1789, in which country, known for equality, liberty and fraternity, would you see this flag?

Answer: France

All the clues - the revolution, the name of the flag and the motto - should have helped you choose France. The flag is based on Paris's traditional colours of red and blue, which were worn by the revolutionaries. White was included as being an 'ancient French colour'.

The tricolour, as it is known in English, has been a big influence on the flag designs of many other countries, including several in this quiz.
6. This flag belongs to the only land-locked country of south-east Asia, one which was once a French colony. Which country is it?

Answer: Laos

Laos is surrounded by Cambodia, Myanmar, China, Vietnam and Thailand. It became a French colony in the nineteenth century, becoming independent in 1953. The flag pictured was first used in 1945 and became the official flag of Laos in 1975.
7. We're in another landlocked country now, but in South America this time. With a capital city called Asuncion, where are we?

Answer: Paraguay

Paraguay is the only landlocked country listed in the options. Most of the countries of South America do border the coast, with Bolivia being the only other country that doesn't. The flag has the coat of arms on one side and enlarging the picture would have helped you with the answer.

The flag dates from 1842. Although it has been changed a couple of times since, the basic colours of red, white and blue have been consistent.
8. Until 1993, this country was half of another, larger country, before it split in two. Each country kept part of the original name. Which European country has this flag?

Answer: Slovakia

The original country was called Czechoslovakia, which divided peacefully into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in a move called the 'velvet divorce'. The flag was adopted in 1992 and shows the country's coat of arms.
9. We're off to Scandinavia now to visit a country with a lot of fjords. Which country does this flag belong to?

Answer: Norway

Norway is in the northern part of Europe, on the Scandinavian Peninsula. The flag was designed in the nineteenth century by Fredrik Meltzer, who is recorded as being inspired by the colours of the French flag and their symbolism of representing freedom. The cross is called a Nordic cross - as you can see, the centre of the cross is not in the middle, but towards the left.
10. This flag incorporates the flags of three of the countries which are part of the whole country. Where would you see this flag flying?

Answer: United Kingdom

The flag is made up of the flag of Saint George (England), which is a red cross on a white background, the flag of Saint Patrick (Ireland), a red diagonal cross on a white field, and the flag of Saint Andrew (Scotland), a diagonal white cross on a blue background. Together, they form the flag known as the Union Jack, although its proper name is the Union flag.
