Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Red + noggin = a person with red hair

Answer: Redhead

Noggin is another term for the human head.

The term redhead has been around since the 1500s. Red hair occurs naturally in only 1 to 2% of the population. Some famous redheads from fiction are Princess Merida from "Brave", Annie from the play of the same name and the dolls Raggedy Anne and Andy.
2. Red + epidermis = a member of a former American NFL football team based in Washington

Answer: Redskin

Epidermis is the outermost layer of skin and therefore synonymous with it.

The Washington Redskins have been a football team since 1932. At first they were the Boston Braves but in 1933 their name was changed to the Boston Redskins to coincide with the Red Sox. In 1937 they moved to Washington. There has been some controversy about the name as some consider it racist, so their name was changed to the Washington Football Team in 2020.
3. Red + lumber = a type of tree native to California

Answer: Redwood

Lumber = wood.

Redwoods are found in California and Oregon. Redwood National Park and Sequoia National Park are just two of the parks dedicated to these trees and are found in California. 4. Red + tunic = a US college athlete whose eligibility is postponed for a year

Answer: Redshirt

A tunic can be a type of shirt.

5. Red + an animal that flies = a scarlet tanager or cardinal

Answer: Redbird

An animal that flies = bird.

Several different birds are known as redbirds. The northern cardinal of North America is known as a redbird as is the scarlet tanager of Northern, Central, and South America. The scarlet tanager is also known as the firebird because of its bright red coloring. Basically the birds are known as redbirds because of their feather color.
6. Red + parka = a British soldier from the Revolutionary War

Answer: Redcoat

A parka is a type of coat.

During the American Revolutionary War the regular British soldiers wore red coats and so became known as redcoats. The Continental Army on the other hand mainly wore blue uniforms. Redcoats were also called lobsters since the color of their uniforms matched a cooked lobster almost perfectly.
7. Red + the part of a plant that is underground = a perennial woodland plant

Answer: Redroot

The part of a plant that is underground = root.

Answer: Redfin

Flipper = fin.

10. Red + nape or scruff = a hillbilly

Answer: Redneck

More recently it has been reclaimed and made famous by comedians such as Jeff Foxworthy with his "You might be a redneck..." jokes.
