Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The piece of equipment on which a game of snooker is played has the same name as what common household item?

Answer: Table

Although commonly referred to as "twelve feet by six feet", the actual dimensions of a professional snooker table, as defined by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) is 11 feet 8.5 inches by 5 ft 10 inches. It is covered by a usually green-in-colour cloth, and has a total of six pockets into which the balls are to be potted.
2. How do you spell the usually green-in-colour cloth that covers the playing surface in snooker?

Answer: Baize

Baize is a coarse woollen cloth that is used to cover the slate and cushions of a snooker table. It must be regularly brushed in order to keep it clean and ensure the nap (raised fuzzy surface) is running in the required direction.
3. Players use what look like long sticks to strike the white ball. What are these snooker 'sticks' known as?

Answer: Cues

Modern snookers cues are usually made of wood or fibreglass. They are slightly tapered towards the "tip", which is the part of the cue that is used to strike the ball. You will see players chalking the tip of their cue regularly in order to ensure good contact between the cue and the white ball.
4. There are eight different coloured balls used in the game of snooker. Which of the following is NOT one of them?

Answer: Orange

There are seven different coloured scoring balls, with point values as follows - Red (1), Yellow (2), Green (3), Brown (4), Blue (5), Pink (6), and Black (7). The eighth coloured ball is the white, or cue ball, which is the ball the player strikes with the cue.
5. Which of the following words is used to denote both the total score a player accumulates during any particular visit and (often followed by "off") the initial shot taken in a frame of snooker?

Answer: Break

The first shot of a frame is called the break, or break off. The cue ball must be placed inside the 'D' at the baulk end of the table, and must be struck so that it hits at least one red ball before hitting any other coloured ball. If a player pots a red ball, he or she will continue to play until they either fail to pot a ball that is on, or play a foul shot.

The total score they achieve during a visit is called a break.
6. Which of the following is the name of the world-famous theatre in Sheffield, England, that is home to the World Snooker Championship?

Answer: Crucible

Built by M J Gleeson and opened in 1971, the Crucible Theatre is located in Norfolk Street, Sheffield in the north of England. The venue began hosting the annual World Snooker Championship in 1977.
7. Who was the first woman to referee a World Snooker Championship final?

Answer: The Rocket

9. In snooker, a player can make a move that results in his or her opponent being awarded points. What is this known as?

Answer: Foul

There are various situations in a game of snooker in which a foul is called. The most common two are when a player fails to hit the correct ball or when the cue ball goes into a pocket. Depending on the particular circumstance of the foul, the opposing player can be awarded anywhere between four and seven points due to the foul.
10. How many balls should there be on the playing surface at the commencement of a frame of snooker?

Answer: 22

One of the referee's responsibilities is to make sure all twenty-two balls are on the table in their correct positions before a player makes a break off shot. The twenty-two balls are the white (cue) ball, and the twenty-one scoring balls - fifteen reds and six "colours" (yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black).
