Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is a famous book called "Running With Scissors." Why should you not run around your house when you are using scissors?

Answer: You could fall and hurt yourself

You should never run or engage in rough play when holding scissors, or any other sharp object, such as a knife or a pencil. If run, you could fall, and you could seriously injure yourself, or someone else. The best scissors for kids are those with rounded ends. You still have to be careful because all scissors are sharp, and you could cut yourself.
2. If you find a book of matches or a lighter lying around your house, what should you do with it?

Answer: Don't touch it

You should never, ever play with matches or lighters! You could burn yourself or set your house on fire. If you find matches or a lighter, tell an adult so they can be put away safely.
3. A lot of things come in plastic bags. If you find a plastic bag, what is the best way to play with it?

Answer: You should never play with plastic bags

Plastic bags may look harmless, but you should never play with them. It is too easy to get trapped inside one, if it's large, and even if it is smaller, it can cover your mouth and nose so you are unable to breathe. Plastic bags are not toys!
4. You are playing in your room when you see something scurry across the floor. It's a spider! Why should you not touch or play with spiders?

Answer: Some are venomous

Most spiders and insects are harmless, but a few, like the brown recluse and the black widow, are venomous, which means if they bite you, you could get very sick or even die. If you see a spider or strange looking insect, tell an adult and let them deal with it. It is often possible to catch a spider and release it outdoors unharmed.
5. Sometimes when we are sick, our parents give us medicine to help us get better. Is it okay to take medicine you might find in the medicine cabinet if you're feeling sick and there are no grown ups around?

Answer: No

While medicines can help us when we're sick, some can be dangerous, especally if we take too much of them. And some medicines that are okay for adults are dangerous for children. Even something like aspirin can be dangerous for kids. If you try to take medicine by yourself, you might take too much, or take the wrong medicine. If you're feeling sick, tell your mom or dad and let them get the medicine for you.
6. If you are lucky, you might have a swimming pool at your house, or know a friend who has one. Why should you not go swimming without an adult to supervise you?

Answer: You could drown

You should never go into a swimming pool unless there's an adult to watch you. Even if you're a good swimmer, you could get into trouble if you get a cramp or hit your head on the side of the pool. And the same rules apply at a pond or the beach. Swimming is a lot of fun, but you should always remember to put safety first!
7. You are playing alone in your yard, when a strange dog approaches you. What should you do?

Answer: Slowly back away from the dog and go inside

Most of us like dogs, and it's fun to play with them. But a strange dog who comes into your yard may be lost and afraid, or sick. Some dogs may bite when they are approached by a person they don't know. It's best to avoid them, especially when no adult is around.

The best strategy is to back off slowly; if you run, the dog may chase you. Never throw something at a strange dog. You may want to play, but he may think you are attacking him. The best strategy is to back away slowly and go indoors and wait until you can tell an adult about the dog.

They can help return the dog to his owner or call animal control if he is a stray.
8. Everyone likes to play hide and seek. It's a fun game! If you are playing hide and seek with your friends, where would NOT be a safe place to hide?

Answer: In an old trunk with a heavy lid

When playing hide and seek, or at any other time, for that matter, you should not go into any place you might not be able to get out of later. If you hid in an old trunk with a heavy lid, lots of bad things could happen. While you were getting inside, the lid could fall and hit you on the head, or slam shut on your fingers. Ouch! And once you were inside, the lid could lock or be too heavy for you to open. Even if you yelled for help, people might not hear you. Never hide inside an appliance like a washer or dryer, or an old refrigerator, because doors that are easy to open from the outside may not open from the inside.
9. Your Mom or Dad probably keep a lot of cleaning supplies around your house, perhaps in a cabinet beneath the kitchen sink. Can any of these be dangerous?

Answer: Yes

Cleaning products can be very dangerous! Some are poisonous, and some are very caustic, which means they can burn you. Still others can give off poisonous gasses or even explode if mixed together. You should never, ever play with cleaning supplies. If you want to help clean the house, only do it when someone is there to supervise you.
10. Many things in our houses run off electricity. There are probably electrical outlets in every room of your house. Why should you never try to stick your fingers or anything else into an electrical outlet?

Answer: You could get a bad shock

Electricity is very, very dangerous. The only thing that should ever go into an electrical outlet is the plug of an item that runs on electricity. If you are old enough, your parents may let you plug things into outlets by yourself, but you must be very careful. Never touch the metal prongs on the plug, and never plug in something if your hands are wet. And never, ever try to stick your tongue or fingers into an electrical outlet! You could be seriously hurt, or even killed.
