Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What have Joey Bettany, Grizel Cochrane, Juliet Carrick, Princess Elisaveta and the Robin been doing at the beginning of the book?

Answer: Picking blueberries

Joey and friends are all covered in blueberry juice and their clothes are torn. On seeing them, Madge Russell orders them to go and tidy up, as Elisaveta's father, the King of Belsornia, is coming for a visit. Madge worries that Elisaveta's maid will disapprove of her tan, but the King reassures her that Elisaveta is looking much healthier. Joey's little nephew Rix asks the King why he isn't wearing a crown, and the King answers by asking him if he'd want to wear his hat all the time.

The King notices that Joey is looking pale and Madge explains that Joey had been worrying a lot over the Robin's health. Jem gives Joey a quick check and tells her and the others to sleep outside because of the heat.
2. Which of these mistresses is NOT one of the Guiders at the Baumersee camp?

Answer: Miss Annersley

Miss Wilson is the Commandant of the Guide Pack, and Miss Nalder and Miss Stewart are her fellow Guiders. Both Miss Nalder and Miss Stewart are relatively new. Only girls over fourteen are allowed on the camp, which means the Robin is unable to come (as is Eustacia, as she is still recovering from her injuries). All three mistresses are Catholics, which means Grizel and Juliet - who are both cadets and due to become mistresses at the new annexe for delicate girls - are in charge of leading Protestant prayers. Joey's dog Rufus also comes along to act as a guard dog, and scares away a dog from a local farm at night.
3. What does Juliet forget to pack for the camp?

Answer: Cocoa

Grizel is looking for cocoa powder in the commissariat tent and Juliet realises that she must have forgotten it, as she had been tasked with packing tinned fruit and other dry foods. Joey teases Juliet that she is too busy thinking about Donal O'Hara, her fiancé, to concentrate on her duties and Juliet gets angry with Joey and calls her 'vulgar'. Miss Stewart suggests the girls drink hot milk for now, as they can get cocoa in the village the following morning, and asks Joey to write home and ask Madge to bring it when she and Jem visit at the weekend.
4. What happens to Joey when she and Vanna di Ricci are gathering wood?

Answer: She falls into a pit.

The girls are sent to collect firewood and Cornelia Flower returns with a fallen tree, which unfortunately turns out to be full of sap, and Miss Wilson has to chop it up so it can be dried out. Meanwhile, Vanna panics and thinks Joey has been 'swallowed by the earth' when Joey suddenly vanishes, and when Miss Wilson goes to investigate, Joey doesn't recognise her voice and shouts at her to get her out. Miss Wilson returns with a group of girls to help her pull Joey out of the pit and calls Joey by her full name, so Joey knows who she is.

They get a rope down to Joey and pull her up, and although she is covered in dirt, she isn't injured. Joey later complains about how useless Vanna was for leaving her behind and asks who the 'other idiot' who talked to her and did nothing to help was, and gets a shock when she finds out it was Miss Wilson.
5. Joey, Grizel and Juliet go fishing early in the day and catch plenty of fish, but get a nasty shock when they think they've fished up a corpse. Some local men go to drag the lake and come back laughing. What did Juliet actually catch?

Answer: An artist's model

Joey, Juliet and Grizel are shaken when they catch what appears to be a dead woman with floating blonde hair. Miss Stewart makes Joey drink brandy and the girls are left to sleep while a group of local men drag the lake. Miss Wilson forbids the other girls to talk about it. Simone cheers Joey up by making her a herb omelette.

The men drag the lake to look for the 'body', which turns out to be a model that once belonged to a French artist who had run away with the niece of Herr Semmering, one of the local men searching the lake.

The artist had wanted to get rid of the model as he was moving back to Paris and had a better one there, and he did not have enough time to burn the model and did not want a child finding it and being scared, so he dumped it in the lake instead. Everyone thinks this is hilarious, except the three fisherwomen, and Miss Stewart tells them they read too many thrillers.
6. Jack Maynard and Jem Russell come to visit the camp, only to find that the girls are all hiding. What has gotten into the camp?

Answer: Hornets

Miss Wilson and Miss Nalder go to meet Jack and Jem, who wonder why the girls haven't all come to greet them when they arrive at the campsite and find the place deserted. They hear a buzzing sound and realise that there are hornets about and the girls must be hiding (Miss Stewart, Grizel and Juliet have taken them all into the commissariat tent), and hurry back to Jem's car and drive off. Jem tells a local farmer, who offers to go down to the campsite and gas the hornets.

The girls come out once the hornets are dead. Margia Stevens, Ilonka Barkocz and Miss Stewart have all been badly stung.

It is revealed that Elisaveta, Evadne Lannis, Maria Marani and Hilda Bhaer are responsible for the hornets' presence; Evadne spotted what she thought was a paper bag, the princess suggested they try to get it down by throwing sticks at it, and the angry hornets chased them back to the campsite.
7. Jack brings news of his sister Mollie, the former maths mistress and now Mrs McDonald. To which country is she moving?

Answer: New Zealand

Madge arrives later with Wanda von Glück and Gisela Marani, two Old Girls, and they have a look around the campsite and catch up with the girls. Jack tells Joey that his sister has been staying with Miss Carthew, who is now Mrs Cowley and has a baby, who she has named after Joey. Before the visitors leave, Jack also tells Joey that Mollie and her husband are sailing for New Zealand immediately as he has a berth there. Joey and the other girls are furious that their former mistress has left them without saying goodbye, though Miss Wilson points out that they can still write to her.
8. Juliet and Grizel prank Joey by leaving her a fake package. However, Simone Lecoutier finds a leather wallet which does turn out to be of genuine historical interest. What does it contain?

Answer: A Tyrolean soldier's letters and mementos of his lost love

Joey and friends decide to explore the pit she fell into and Joey wonders if there might be anything interesting down there. Knowing that Joey is a huge fan of Napoleon, Grizel and Juliet put together a fake package containing some buttons, a hastily-made clay bust of Napoleon's head, a handkerchief and the message 'sold again' written in German script, all wrapped in oilcloth. Grizel is surprised when Simone also finds a package in the pit, which turns out to be real; it is a series of letters belonging to a Tyrolean soldier called Gottlieb, who fought in Andreas Hofer's army.

The letters are from Mädel, his childhood sweetheart, and from her sister informing him that Mädel has died, as well as a letter written by Gottlieb while he was dying, revealing that he, Mädel and her brother Friedrich had dug the pit as children.

The package also contains a lock of Mädel's hair and a locket with a painting of her. Instead of taking the items back for the school museum, Miss Wilson makes enquiries and finds a local man who turns out to be descended from Gottlieb, and gives him his ancestor's letters for safekeeping.
9. When Elisaveta, Paula von Rothenfels and Cyrilla Maurus fall into a pond, what do Elsie Carr and friends do?

Answer: Give them a dose of various ingredients

Elisaveta falls into a pond at a nearby farm and Paula and Cyrilla get pulled in when they try to help her out. All three girls are soaking wet, covered in pondweed and smelling bad. Elsie insists that Elisaveta, Paula and Cyrilla be given a dose in case they swallowed anything nasty, after they have a wash in the lake.

The girls are reluctant, but Cornelia insists that they must in case Elisaveta gets ill and Madge gets into trouble with the Belsornian authorities. Elsie knows where the key of the medicine cabinet is and pilfers various medicines from it.

The 'dose' turns out to be a mixture of gregory powder, liquorice powder, senna pods and syrup of figs - all of which are laxatives - and the three victims complain about how disgusting it is.

The Quintette are forced to confess to Miss Wilson when she is about to dose the girls who fell in the pond and Paula complains that she has already had medicine.
10. Elsie, Cornelia, Evadne, Ilonka Barcokz and Margia Stevens try to 'help' the girls who fell into the pond by washing and starching their clothes, as well as the clothes of other people. What does Evadne suggest using to starch the clothes?

Answer: Cornflour

The Quintette decide to wash the clothes and some other people's items, using the dixies (iron pots) to boil water. Unfortunately, they mix all the clothes together, causing white items to be stained and colours to run, and when Paula suggests starching handkerchiefs, Evadne comes up with the idea of using cornflour as her mother's maid uses it to starch laces.

They use too much cornflour and as a result, the items have to be soaked and washed again later on until all the starch has come out. They also forget to wash out the dixies, with the result that the coffee made for Kaffee und Kuchen tastes soapy.

When Miss Wilson sees the clothes, she tells the girls that if they had waited, they would have done their Laundress badge the next day and learned how to wash clothes properly.

She resolves to ask Madge and Mlle Lepattre to introduce domestic science classes to the school, so that the girls can learn how to do basic household tasks. On the final night of camp, the girls have a singsong around the campfire before packing up and leaving the next morning.
