Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the annoying younger girl who sits with Rosalie and Tom on the train?

Answer: Joanna Reay

Several characters point out the girls' rhyming names: Tom Gay, Rosalie Way and Joanna Reay (and Primrose Day as well). Rosalie has never been to school before, having only had lessons with a few other girls (some of whom join the Chalet School later on). Mrs Way spots Tom at the station and asks her to look after Rosalie on the train. Tom is reluctant but agrees to do so. Rosalie is homesick and cries on the journey, while Joanna irritates Tom and the prefects supervising them by bombarding her with questions until both Tom and Gay Lambert have to tell her to be quiet. Tom warns her that Joanna's peers will find her very obnoxious if she doesn't rein it in a bit.
2. Elfie Woodward, the Upper Third games prefect, asks the girls to choose tennis or cricket as the game they would rather focus on. Rosalie chooses cricket, but has she played it before?

Answer: No

Rosalie has played tennis at home, but not cricket. She claims that she wants to play cricket because she wants to try something new, but the real reason is because Tom plays cricket and Rosalie wants to spend time with her. Tom can't understand Rosalie's logic as she has more experience with tennis, and also warns her that most of the first team players in school sports are seniors, so if she plans to stay, she should stick to what she's good at. Miss Burn tells Rosalie to do extra tennis, as she is a poor cricketer but a good tennis player, and Rosalie walks off and sits in the garden crying. Gay spots her and Rosalie tells her what the matter is. Gay realises that Rosalie has a crush on Tom, and thinks ruefully that she couldn't have picked a worse person to have a crush on.
3. Tom and Rosalie are late for prep after Beth Chester catches them out of lessons and makes them report themselves to Miss Wilson. Daisy Venables is taking prep for their form. Why is she in a bad mood?

Answer: She has toothache.

While the other girls go off to do various things before prep, Tom asks Rosalie why she is upset about not getting to do cricket and Rosalie blurts out that she wanted to be with Tom. Beth finds them talking on the drive and tells them off for not being in prep, as the bell went several minutes ago, and sends them to Miss Annersley.

After Miss Annersley warns them not to ignore bells in future, both girls are late for prep, much to Daisy's irritation. Daisy has toothache, but - like Joey, as Matron later notes - she hates the dentist and tries to treat it herself with various home remedies, but to no avail.
4. Daisy tells Rosalie off for crying out when she pricks her finger on a mapping pen. Rosalie accidentally knocks over her desk and Daisy loses her temper at her. How does Rosalie react?

Answer: She runs out of the room and hides in the garden.

Daisy's bad mood is not helped when Vanna Ozanne's chair crashes into Barbara Smith's desk and Vanna falls off her chair and gets covered in ink. Daisy sends her to Matron and tells her off for being cheeky. Rosalie then cries out when she accidentally hurts her finger with a mapping pen. Daisy tells her off and orders her to stand up and Rosalie stands up so fast, she knocks her desk over. Daisy snaps and gives her lines to do, and Rosalie responds by telling her she hates her and running off in tears.

As Daisy is friends with Gwensi Howell - whose family own the building - and knows the gardens well, she finds Rosalie lying under some rhododendrons and crying. Daisy apologises and goes to Matron, feeling guilty. Matron sends Daisy to bed and books her a dental appointment.
5. What happens to Rosalie during French class?

Answer: She faints.

Rosalie wakes up early and goes for a walk in the garden without asking permission. Tom, who is also up early to do a spot of gardening, sees her and asks why she is alone, and if she has had her milk. Rosalie is rude to Tom, even when Tom apologises for upsetting her earlier, and Tom gets fed up and decides to focus on her gardening. Daisy tells her off for not wearing her overall and Tom wonders what her problem is. During French class, Rosalie faints and has to be taken to Matron, and Elfie reveals to Tom that she had seen Rosalie playing with her breakfast and barely touching it.
6. Miss Wilson gets a call from Jack Maynard to say that Joey has had another baby. What is his name?

Answer: Charles

Full name Charles Richard Maynard; Charles because Joey likes the name and Richard for his uncle Dick and Joey's father. Miss Wilson gets a call from Jack and passes the news on to the other staff while they discuss half term plans. The news reaches the school and Bride Bettany, Joey's niece, explains to Rosalie why Joey is such a big name in the school.

As for the other little Maynards: Felix, along with his twin sister Felicity, were born in Canada in 'Shocks for the Chalet School' and Geoffrey and his twin sister Philippa were born in 'Theodora and the Chalet School'. Mike was born around the time of 'Three Go to the Chalet School'.
7. Which Biblical couple do Tom and Rosalie dress up as for the fancy dress party?

Answer: Solomon and the Queen of Sheba

The girls are supposed to go to Tintern Abbey, but the trip is called off due to rain, so they have a fancy dress party instead. Tom suggests that she and Rosalie go as a cowboy and cowgirl, but Rosalie points out that their outfits are too complicated, and Tom turns down Rosalie's idea of the Babes in the Wood.

She decides that they should go as Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, with both of them wearing dressing gowns, Tom wearing a fez borrowed from Matron and a fake beard, and Rosalie wearing a veil.

Other outfits include a granny (Amy West), the Bathing Twins (Vanna Ozanne and Primrose Day), Miss Muffet (Nella Ozanne), Sport (Elfie), an Indian rajah (Bride), a Dutch doll (Jacynth Hardy), a postbox (Mollie Avery), and the boy from the Pears Soap advert (Gay).
8. Which Shakespeare play do the girls staying behind at school go to see during half term?

Answer: As You Like It

The girls go to Stratford to see Shakespeare's 'As You Like It' as part of their half term activities. Several of the girls are excited; Dorcas Brownlow, for instance, wants to go into acting like her sister and is keen to study the character parts, while the Upper Third ask Miss Linton if they can do 'As You Like It' instead of Robert Louis Stevenson. On the Friday before term ends, the girls are divided into groups and given scenes from the play to read.

The trip goes off without a hitch but unfortunately, the school get back very late from the play and several of the girls are in a bad mood the next day.
9. Rosalie loses her temper again during a free period. What does Tom do to upset her?

Answer: She accidentally breaks one of Rosalie's knitting needles.

Tempers are frayed among the Upper Third girls. Elfie and Primrose fight over a magazine and Bride is in a bad mood because she can't see Joey and her new cousin. Rosalie leaves her knitting on the ground, and Tom trips over it and accidentally breaks one of her needles. Rosalie complains that she has lost her place and to make matters worse, her deckchair collapses and she goes down with it.

She loses her temper and complains about the school, and the other girls turn on her. Rosalie runs off in tears and misses dinner.

The girls go to look for her in the garden, but have no idea where she is and have to tell Miss Wilson. Miss Wilson, remembering Gay running away a few books earlier, phones Plas Gwyn and asks Miss Annersley and Daisy to come back and help look for Rosalie. Daisy thinks she knows where Rosalie is, but has to check with Gwensi as it involves a secret hiding place.

After Gwensi gives her permission to tell the staff, Daisy explains that when she, Gwensi and Beth were younger (in 'The Chalet School Goes to It'), they had found a small tunnel in the yew hedge, and she thinks Rosalie is hiding there.
10. Why does Rosalie have to have her hair cut at the end of the book?

Answer: She gets it caught in a yew bush and Tom has to cut her free.

Daisy, Tom, Miss Burn and Miss Wilson go to the yew hedge to find Rosalie. Tom takes off her dress to save it from being ripped and cuts her way through the hedge with her knife. She hears Rosalie calling for help. Miss Wilson panics, remembering what happened with Eustacia Benson in Tyrol, though Miss Burn reassures her that nothing like that could happen here. Rosalie's hair is caught in the yew and she can't pull herself free, so Tommy frees her by giving her a haircut. Rosalie is taken to the school sanatorium and Matron later takes her to get her hair tidied up. Miss Annersley warns her not to say anything until she herself has told the school what happened. Rosalie is embarrassed, but the girls tell her that short hair suits her, and they go off to watch Daisy and others play in an inter-school cricket match.
