Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start with a BUNYIP - if you came to Australia and someone offered you a bite of bunyip, what would you say? Eat it?

Answer: No, thanks, it's nothing but a myth!

No one knows if bunyips ever really existed, but stories of them have been circulating for many years. Bunyips are scary creatures which are supposed to have lived by waterholes and come out mostly at night.
2. I am sometimes found in a chimney - but could a DAMPER *also* be an edible delight? Eat it? Answer Yes or No!

Answer: Yes

Damper is a kind of doughy food often eaten and made when camping. It's made by mixing flour and milk (sometimes an egg is added). The dough is then rolled into a strip and twisted round a stick to cook over the fire. It's served hot with butter and jam. Some people wrap a lump of dough in foil and place it in the coals of the fire to cook.
3. I'm a SOOK - if you came to Australia and someone mentioned eating sook to you, what would you say? Eat it?

Answer: No way, and I'd cry about it, because a sook is a cry-baby

A sook is a pejorative word for someone who cries a lot. It is thought that the word may originate with a sucking calf.
4. You hear someone mention a KELPIE and wonder if that would be okay to eat...what do you decide? Eat it?

Answer: No, that's an Australian breed of dog!

A kelpie is a sheep dog, bred in Australia for herding, thought to have come from collies. It is also a Scottish word for a water sprite. Either way, you don't want to eat it!
5. As a LAMINGTON, I could be a yummy square of sponge tossed in chocolate icing and coconut, or else a pen for lambs ... Eat it? Answer Yes or No!

Answer: Yes

Lamingtons are really delicious. They are named after a gentleman who was Governor of Queensland from 1896-1901.

A variation on lamingtons is jelly cakes. Jelly (jello) is made up according to the directions on the packet. When cool, and starting to set very slightly, the cake is tossed in it, and then in coconut. The coconut used in Australia is usually desiccated (dried).
6. Aaah, PALOONA....should you take a chance and eat it, or pass?

Answer: Pass! I can't eat a place!

You can't eat Paloona, but it's certainly worth visiting! It is in Northern Tasmania, which is an island state off the coast of south eastern Australia. It has a hydro-electric power station that provides energy to the surrounding districts.
7. A QUANDONG - is it edible? Will you take the chance and eat it?

Answer: Yes! It's an Australian fruit used by the Aboriginal peoples, nutritious as well as tasty!

A quandong is indeed an edible fruit, prized not only for its Vitamin C content, but also for various medicinal uses. All parts of the plant are used by the Aboriginal people who chew its leaves to make a poultice, or use its roots, which have anti-bacterial properties.

The fruit itself is red and it is sometimes called a native peach.
8. A SNAG could be a nickname for a sausage, or it could be a trick! Eat it?

Answer: Yes, I love barbecued sausages!

A barbecue isn't a barbecue in Australia without snags (sausages). They are generally made from beef, and served with 'dead horse' - tomato sauce. If a community group or church has a fundraising fete, they will usually include a 'sausage sizzle' and sell sausages on a piece of bread, with the option of fried onions and tomato sauce on top.
9. My name is ESKY - I wonder if you think I would be good to eat?

Answer: No, it's an ice-box like a portable refrigerator!

Eskies come in different sizes. Really big ones are often on wheels and can be used as a seat at a picnic. They are made from insulating material and while are generally used to keep things cold (hence the name 'esky', derived from Eskimo) they are also very useful in keeping food warm.
10. If I told you I'm a TIM TAM, would you think I was a kind of head-wear, or a chocolate biscuit that is good dunked in milk? Eat it? Answer Yes or No!

Answer: Yes

Tim Tams are a very popular biscuit (cookie) in Australia. Recently it has become popular to bite the ends off the biscuit and suck some hot coffee through it. You then stuff the whole thing in your mouth before it collapses. This is known as a Tim Tam slam!
