Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I'll get the big box down from the pantry. You get a bowl, sugar, milk and maybe some berries or bananas. What are we having for breakfast?

Answer: Cold cereal

I'm getting down the box of cold cereal to put in the bowl, and then we put on a little sugar and some strawberries or blueberries and finish it off with milk. Cereals are made from many types of grain and grain is part of a healthy diet.
2. We'll need the skillet to fry up some long narrow strips of meat. Once those are done, we'll crack open these perfect little oval-shaped things over the skillet and watch them cook. What are we eating this morning?

Answer: Bacon and eggs

Bacon is usually packaged in long narrow strips. We can use the bacon grease to fry our eggs. If you turn them over once while they're cooking and the yellow part - the yoke - is still runny, the egg is called 'over easy'.
3. This morning we're in a hurry, no time to sit down to breakfast. I'm taking a square about the size of a piece of bread out of its foil package, putting it in the toaster and when it pops up, you must be careful, the icing will be very, VERY hot! What are you having for breakfast?

Answer: Toaster pastry

We're having Pop Tarts for breakfast. Because they have a lot of sugar in them, you really shouldn't eat too many or too often but once in a while is okay. They're very popular; they've been around since 1963.
4. I'm going to need your help to make this breakfast. First we need to mix up some eggs with a little bit of milk while the skillet gets hot. Then we'll put some thick slices of bread in the egg mixture and put the bread in the skillet. We'll have some syrup to pour on top when it's all done. What are we having this morning?

Answer: French toast

French toast is good with syrup or bananas or berries or all those things. French toast is known throughout the world but each country has their own special way of preparing it. Some places coat the bread in crumbs before cooking, some places add cinnamon and other spices to the egg mixture before frying, and still other countries use different types of bread to make French toast.
5. It's cold outside so let's start the day off with something warm for your tummy. Go get the box with the picture of a black chef on the front or the round container with the old-fashioned Quaker man on the front and I'll make us breakfast. What could we be having this morning?

Answer: Cream of wheat or oatmeal

As the name implies, oatmeal is made from oats and cream of wheat is made from wheat. Oats and wheat are grains and are good for everyone to eat. For adults, they can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. They are especially good when served warm on a cold day.

Some people like to eat them just as they come off the stove, others pour milk on them; add a touch of sugar or brown sugar or syrup.
6. Push the handle down on the toaster while I fry up a patty and scramble something. We are in a hurry again today so we'll put our breakfast between two pieces of bread and leave. What in the world are we having for breakfast today?

Answer: Sausage and egg sandwich

A sausage and egg sandwich is actually a pretty balanced meal. You have grains in bread, dairy if you'd like a slice of cheese over it all, and sausage and eggs in the meat category. That's right, the government department that studies foods and nutrition has put eggs in the same category as meat because of the high amount of protein in them. Humans have been eating the eggs birds lay for thousands of years.
7. It's the weekend so I thought we'd have something special. Get the griddle. I'll get the special flour, eggs, and milk. What special breakfast are we having?

Answer: Pancakes or waffles

Little round circles of browned goodness equals pancakes for breakfast. If you pour the flour and egg and milk mixture onto a waffle iron and close the lid, in just a few minutes, you'll have a lovely golden brown waffle with little hills and valleys that are just made to catch and hold the warm maple syrup.
8. This morning, I'm not going to tell you what our breakfast is made of. Instead, I'm going to tell you some of the names or types of this food. There are Western, French, and Denver varieties. There are Greek, Chinese, and Indian varieties too. Can you guess what you're having for breakfast this morning?

Answer: Omelets

We're having omelets (or omelettes) for breakfast. Yummy! It seems there are as many types of omelets as there are places where they are eaten. And while we're talking about choices and eggs, how many ways can you name to fix eggs? Here's a few I thought of: coddled, fried over easy, fried over hard, fried sunny side up, poached, scrambled, basted, shirred, hard-boiled, and soft-boiled.
9. The breakfast we're having this morning is one of my favorites. We're going to turn buttermilk and flour and butter into a thick sheet of dough to be cut into circles and baked. Then we'll make a roux (flour and butter mix), add some milk and cooked meat. Can you figure out what we're making?

Answer: Biscuits and gravy

Chipped beef and ground beef (sometimes called SOS), ham (called red-eye), bacon, roast pork or roast beef, chicken or turkey, giblets (neck gizzard, liver, heart) are all examples of gravies. Many people have had gravy on mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner but if you put gravy over biscuits and serve it all with some hash browns, you've made a delicious breakfast.
10. We are finally going out to eat. We're going to a fancy restaurant where they serve brunch. We'll be having eggs served on top of slices of ham and toasted muffins. They will be covered in a thick, rich, slightly lemony sauce. What do you think we're having for brunch?

Answer: Eggs benedict

The word brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch and is usually served between and instead of those two meals. There is a dispute about who really 'invented' eggs benedict but someone thought up a wonderful and delicious way to dress up a plate for a fancy luncheon or brunch.

The eggs will be drenched in hollandaise sauce and may be served with fresh blanched asparagus or fried potatoes of some sort or fresh fruit.
