Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colloquially, if you are dead and buried you are sometimes said to be feeding the what?

Answer: Worms

In fact worms don't eat dead bodies. As bodies start to decay bacteria eat it. These are followed by fungal spores and, if flies have been able to lay eggs on the body, maggots, and it is these that eat decaying meat. Whilst worms do eat dead things in the garden it is usually leaves, plants and grass.
2. If you are in town with your car what do you feed to avoid getting a penalty ticket?

Answer: Parking meter

Parking meters used to line many roads in towns and cities in the United Kingdom, and you could run backwards and forwards to them putting more money in as your time ticked away. Due to theft and vandalism very few of the cash meters now remain, and many councils have changed over to paying your parking fee by mobile phone, text or debit card.
3. What do people who visit Las Vegas feed, sometimes too much?

Answer: Slot machines

Casinos in Las Vegas, and indeed other places, have banks of slot machines. Some people become obsessed with them and sit there hour after hour feeding money into the slot in the hopes of hitting the jackpot. This rarely happens.
4. What may you have to feed to keep the electricity on in the UK?

Answer: Electricity meter

When I was a child you used to feed the prepayment electricity meter with shillings. Inflation soon put that up to 50p pieces, and now most prepayment meters work on a top up card system. This means there is no need for an electricity board representative to call to empty the meter every so often, and it is also a good security measure against theft.
5. If you are always asking questions and seeking knowledge you are feeding your what?

Answer: Curiosity

Curiosity is something we all possess. Some people however have it in a very high degree and are curious about almost everything. Teaching by asking questions is a well established practice, and is known as the "Socratic method", coming to us from Socrates. This is especially popular in law schools, where lawyers must learn to listen carefully and always have a follow up question ready.
6. In "Little Shop of Horrors" Audrey was always saying "feed me". What was Audrey?

Answer: A plant

Audrey is a plant, resembling a huge Venus flytrap, who wants to be fed with human blood. She persuades Seymour, a worker in a florist shop, to feed her.
Her demands quickly rise from a few drops of blood to whole bodies, and eventually she eats Seymour. Audrey is actually an alien with plans to take over the world.
7. If you should starve a fever what should you feed?

Answer: A cold

There is little truth in the saying "feed a cold and starve a fever". It probably comes from the fact that if you have a high fever you don't feel much like eating anything, whereas with a cold your appetite is often unimpaired.
8. If you are "biting the hand that feeds you", what are you being?

Answer: Ungrateful

If you are "biting the hand that feeds you" you are being ungrateful to someone who has helped you in some way. It implies that you are like a dog that will bite the person that supplies food for it, even though this may mean it doesn't get fed in the future.
9. If someone pays you only a small amount of money for work done what are they sometimes said to be paying you?

Answer: Chicken feed

To call a small amount of money "chicken feed" refers to the fact that chickens can be fed on corn and small seeds that are of no use for anything else. This saying appears to originate from America.
10. Music, flowers, beautiful pictures, are all sometimes said to feed your what?

Answer: Soul

Anything that makes you happy when you look at it or hear it, or anything intangible, like the feeling you get on a lovely summer day, that lifts the spirits, is food for the soul. Every so often to just sit back and appreciate something lovely is good for everyone.
