Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Nigerian born actor starred as Agent Smith in "The Matrix" franchise (1999-2003) and Elrond in "The Lord of the Rings" franchise (2001-2003)?

Answer: Hugo Weaving

Weaving hit the big time with his role as drag queen Mitzi Del Bra in the 1994 movie "Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert" in which he starred alongside Terence Stamp and Guy Pearce. In 1995 he provided the voice for Rex the sheepdog in the movie about a sheep herding pig "Babe", which also saw the wonderful Miriam Margolyes voice Fly, a border collie.
2. What is a golden orb weaver?

Answer: Spider

Golden orb weavers, also known as banana spiders are talented web makers, often producing intricate designs. They are found in most warmer climates throughout the world and although their venom is very effective on prey such as locusts, they pose little danger to humans.
3. In which of Sir Walter Scott's poems did he write the lines, "Oh, what a tangled web we weave. When first we practise to deceive!"?

Answer: Marmion

One of the most mis attributed quotes ever, often believed to be from Shakespeare, this passage comes from Scott's "Marmion: A Tale Of Flodden Field" a romantic poem about Lord Marmion of Fontenaye. The poem was first published in 1808 and is mentioned in "Jane Eyre" (1847) by Charlotte Bronte.
4. In which sport would one expect to hear the phrase, "bob and weave"?

Answer: Boxing

Bobbing and weaving are movements both up and down and from side to side, with the intention of evading an opponent's punches. Jack Dempsey and Mike Tyson among others were very skilled at the art of bob and weave.
5. What was the name of the New Mexico marshal on loan to the NYPD played by Dennis Weaver in a popular 1970s TV show?

Answer: McCloud

"McCloud" starring Weaver as Sam McCloud ran from 1970 to 1977 and though it may offer a dated view of New York nowadays, it is interesting from a historical view, that in the opening credits, the twin towers of The World Trade Centre are shown still under construction.
6. Weaver's Way is a 98 kilometre (61 miles) public footpath in Norfolk, UK between Cromer and which other coastal town?

Answer: Great Yarmouth

Although it is far from being the longest public footpath in UK, Weaver's Way is still an impressive length and further than I would want to walk in a day. For the more energetic amongst us, the footpath joins with the 72 kilometre (45 mile) Norfolk Coast Path at Cromer and the Great Yarmouth end links with the 148 kilometre (92 mile) Angles Way footpath if one feels like adding more distance to a walk.
7. Where would one expect to find a red-headed weaver?

Answer: African savanna

The red-headed weaver was first described as a new species by Frederic de Lafresnaye in 1839 after he was sent a pair of examples from Senegal by an unknown collector. These birds are found in many African countries, occupying broad leaved woodland and acacia savanna.
8. Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman and which other influential musician originally comprised folk band The Weavers?

Answer: Pete Seeger

The Weavers formed in 1948 and recorded their best known record, "Goodnight Irene" in 1950. Pete Seeger wrote many well known songs such as "Turn! Turn! Turn!" (1962) which was an American number one for The Byrds in 1965 and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" (1955) which was recorded by Marlene Dietrich, Joan Baez and Johnny Rivers among others.

When Seeger died in 2014, Bruce Springsteen paid tribute, saying, "I lost a great friend and a great hero last night."
9. Sigourney Weaver's uncle was a famous radio and TV personality, often appearing with Spike Jones in the 1940s and 50s. What was his unusual nickname?

Answer: Doodles

Weaver's real name was Winstead Sheffield Glenndenning Dixon Weaver but he had gone by the name Doodles since childhood as his mother referred to him as Doodlebug. He is remembered for his characters of Professor Feetlebaum, who spoke in ridiculous spoonerisms, as well as his sports commentator who struggles to remember whether he is covering a horse race or a boxing match.

He also appeared in films, including Alfred Hitchcock's movie, "The Birds" (1963), "The Zodiac Killer" (1971) and "Earthbound" (1981).
10. The Dokumacılar, which translates The Weavers, are a terrorist organisation linked to Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). In which country are they mainly active?

Answer: Turkey

After the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) fought against ISIL during the Syrian Civil War, the Dokumacılar were formed to specifically target this group. They are believed to have been responsible for at least three bombing attacks between 2013 and 2017, including the 2015 Suruc bombing which resulted in 32 deaths.
