Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Another term for a run in a stocking is what?

Answer: Ladder

Although for some younger folks this may be unfamiliar territory, those of us of a certain age will well remember the annoyance of finding a run or a ladder in our hoses! I always wondered why we purchased garments that were so easily and predictably ruined.
2. In the movie "It's a Wonderful Life", there is a run on an institution that nearly spells doom for our hero and his family. Of the choices listed, which most closely describes that institution?

Answer: Bank

A run on a bank occurs when its customers lose faith in the bank's solvency. Depositors in large numbers attempt to withdraw funds or close their accounts, and the bank (which doesn't keep every penny on hand in cash) runs out of money.

In "It's a Wonderful Life", the institution that experiences a run is NOT a bank. It is a building and loan, which is a nice distinction, but it functions in many ways like a bank.

3. In the US, when elections are held, candidates are said to be "running for office". In the UK, what do candidates for office do?

Answer: Stand

The transition from standing for election in the UK to running for office in the US is not clear. Some wags have suggested that Americans are always in a hurry, though.

The photo depicts a lemonade stand.
4. What can you do with fabric to ensure its colors don't run?

Answer: Soak it in a salted vinegar solution overnight.

If a fabric's colors run, it is because the dyes in them have not been set. A home remedy for setting colors is to mix salt and vinegar into a bucket of water, add the fabric or garment, making sure the entire thing is "wetted" down, and leave it for about 24 hours.

The exact quantities and steps to follow are readily available online. Also, you need to check beforehand to make sure the fabric you're working with will not be harmed by the treatment.
5. If I am a good runner, and my father was a good runner, and my daughter is a good runner, what could you say about our family's running prowess? Fill in the missing words: "It ____in the ______."

Answer: runs family

While some traits that run in families can be clearly linked to genetics-like eye color or dominant handedness, others--like talents--are not as easily identified in genetic code.

The photo is of a family of cheetahs, known to be fast runners!
6. What beloved movie character was urged to "Run!" as a lad and went on to run clear across America?

Answer: Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump was born with physical and intellectual disabilities, but when he and his friend Jenny were about to be bullied by several older kids, she told him, "Run, Forrest, run!" and run he did, breaking his leg braces so they fell off his legs, and after that, there was no stopping him. In adulthood, when Jenny disappointed him in love, Forrest just started running one day and didn't stop until he had gone coast to coast five times, and achieved quite a degree of fame for his feat.

For the two or three of you who may not have seen the movie, the photo relates back to Forrest's mother's little piece of wisdom: "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get."
7. What 1967 hit contains these lyrics? "And so we're Running just as fast as we can Holding on to one another's hands"

Answer: I Think We're Alone Now

Tommy James and the Shondells first sang "I Think We're Alone Now", and it hit number four on Billboard's Hot 100. It was considered mildly risqué by some due to its hinting that the couple in the song had been intimate. It was written by Richie Cordell, who also wrote the Tommy James hit "Mony Mony". Both songs have since been covered a number of times.
8. In which of the following games can one "run the table"?

Answer: Billiards

Billiards is a family of cue games in which you hit balls on a table into holes (pockets) along the sides of the playing surface. As long as you get a ball in a pocket, you may continue playing your turn. If you hit a ball in a pocket on every try until all the balls are gone, you have "run the table".

The photo shows a pool; the game of pool is a common form of billiards.
9. If you encounter something truly horrifying and frightening, it might be said to make your blood run what?

Answer: Cold

There are a number of conditions associated with fear that might have led people in the past to believe their blood was dropping in temperature-cold sweats, chills, shivering. But of course, one's blood remains the same temperature through episodes of terror, and the conditions mentioned above are generally brief and transient.
10. If something is run-of-the-mill, how might it be described?

Answer: completely unremarkable

Etymology Online lists the origin of this phrase as occurring about 1909. It referred to the products of a mill before they were inspected for quality and the poorer ones culled.
