Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In baseball scoring, the number one is assigned to which player?

Answer: Pitcher

Baseball is a bat and ball game played on a marked-out field, between two opposing teams each of nine players. The object of the game is to score as many runs as possible by whacking a pitched ball in allowable directions, and then taking off and running for the lick of your life counter-clockwise around four bases, hoping to make it to one of them safely before the ball, caught and thrown by the opposing team, gets there first.

This is an extremely popular game in North America, and in some parts of South America, Europe and East Asia, particularly Japan.

A game similar to baseball has been found noted in an old French paper dating back to the beginning of the 1300s, so it's been around for a long time. "Play balllll!"
2. As far as the science of astrophysics goes, what name is given to two objects orbiting around a centre of mass?

Answer: Binary stars

A binary star is one of two stars that orbit around their common centre of mass. Binary stars are important markers in this science because their presence enable scientists, by charting their orbits, to calculate the size of the centre around which they travel. That's the entire extent of my knowledge of this detailed field of study. If I attempt to explain further, the entire history of the universe would have to be re-written.
3. In the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" what was the category comprising the number three?

Answer: French Hens

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" is an English Christmas which details the ever accumulating list of presents some unfortunate being's true love kept bringing to her on each of the twelve days leading up to Christmas Day itself. Hopefully she either (1) owned a farm, or (2) a large hotel or (3) had a hearing impairment. Its lyrics follow, but I almost ran out of room at the inn fitting them in.

On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me a partridge in a pear tree (so far so good).

On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (oh how nice).

On the third day of Christmas my true love sent to me three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (the trees should look lovely in the front yard).

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love sent to me four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (I'll have to build an aviary).

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love sent to me five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (I'll have to sell one of the rings to buy the wood for the bird cage).

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love sent to me six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (looks like goose is on the Christmas menu).

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (the swans are lovely but those geese are SO noisy).

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love sent to me eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (why on earth did he give me eight dairy maids. I haven't even got a cow!).

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love sent to me nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (Nine - NINE extra mouths to feed! They can jolly well help feed those rotten noisy birds!).

On the tenth day of Christmas my true love sent to me ten Lords a-leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (I hate that man. Where am I supposed to put those hyper-active idiots?)

On the eleventh day of Christmas my true love sent to me eleven pipers piping, ten Lords a-leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (the police are on the doorstep waving noise complaints at me, sob, those idiotic Lords kept bounding around them, the moronic women have danced all through my vegetable patch, sob, the dairy maids have gone on strike, and I HATE those birds who poo on everything in sight!)

On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me twelve drummers drumming, eleven pipers piping, ten Lords a-leaping, nine ladies dancing, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree (that's it. We're through).
4. Four is a number associated with the parts of which musical entity?

Answer: Symphony

A symphony is a musical composition usually performed by a full orchestra, but it can also be performed by concert bands, choirs, chamber ensembles and the like. Normally a symphony is broken down into four separate movements. The first or opening movement is typically either sonata like or a reasonably lively allegro tempo.

The second section is usually slowwwwwww and rather heavy. However, this is immediately followed by a lively scherzo or fun-loving tempo of the third movement, while the last movement, usually in sonata type presentation is a type of recapitulation of the other three parts.

Some of the world's great classical composers of symphony include Ludwig von Beethoven's hard-working and tedious works, Joseph Hadyn's lovely but rather predictable presentations and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's breathtakingly lovely work of genius.
5. Five is the atomic number of which chemical element?

Answer: Boron

Boron is classed as a low-abundance element on our planet and in the entire solar system. The largest sources of this element are to be found in Turkey. It is used in the manufacture of fiberglass, some ceramics, fertiliser, magnets, metal coating, laundry detergent, bleach, shielding in nuclear reactors, and some organic pharmaceuticals.

It is considered essential to life, but altogether sounds - sorry, yawnnnnnn - rather boring, to tell the truth.
6. Which creation by one of nature's magnificent little creatures consists of six sides?

Answer: The cells of a beehive

A beehive can be created by bees just about anywhere in an enclosed structure, whether naturally available such as a hollow tree trunk, or man-made. If one looks closely at the sweet honeycomb that is created by these beautiful little creatures who work so hard to keep their kingdom together, we can see that each cell of the hive consists of six sides. Bees have been kept by man dating back as far as the days of ancient Egypt in structures similar to the kind used today. The process of smoking the hives also remains the same today, as are the types of simple containers into which honey is stored. It never spoils you see.

After the delicious honey has been squeezed out of the beeswax or honeycomb, the remaining product is utilised in a number of different ways. Some cheeses are coated with beeswax, for example, to prevent spoilage, and it is utilised in the manufacture of goods such as petroleum jelly, hand cream, lip balm and colouring, moisturiser, various make-ups, hair products, candles, furniture polish and surfboard wax, and an astonishing array of other products. It helps ease indigestion following meals, it can be used as a sugar substitute in cooking, a spoonful into which a large tablet has been placed makes it easy to swallow same, a spoonful of honey and cinnamon mixed into hot milk gives an instant boost of energy, it helps ease sore throats and colds, reduces cholesterol, makes an excellent facial when mixed with some yoghurt and mashed banana, helps ease arthritis and bladder infections, and oh, so many more uses. This products of densely packed six-sided cells is truly one amazing product, and one that never fails to give me a real...er...buzz.
7. In which play by Shakespeare is the Seven Ages of Man theory discussed?

Answer: As You Like It

"As You Like It" is believed to have been written by Shakespeare some time between 1599 and 1600. This comedy details the adventures of Rosalind who has been banished from her uncle's court after he has deposed the rightly ruler, her father. At the same time, Orlando, another gentleman of the kingdom, and conveniently in love with Rosalind, has also fled his home where he was being persecuted by his brother, Oliver. Rosalind's cousin Celia also flees with Rosalind. She disguises herself as a poor woman, while Rosalind takes on the guise of a young man. Everyone ends up in the Forest of Arden, where several other characters are also introduced into the play in a glorious confusion of mistaken identity, disguises, love stories, and convoluted twists and turns that are the hallmark of a Shakespearean comedy. There is even a rampaging lioness thrown in for good measure. This is another gem from the Bard of Avon that, with a skilled cast, is a treat to see.

The following is the delightful extract from the play which discusses Shakespeare's Seven Ages of Man theory:

All the world 's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His Acts being seven ages. At first the Infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then the whining School-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the Lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a Soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard;
Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the Justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances,-
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered Pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose, and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness, and mere oblivion,-
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
8. Eight is a number associated with fortune telling. Can you work out which particular branch this photo refers to?

Answer: Horoscope

A horoscope is an astrological chart which supposedly enables its believers to have their future, their past, their perfect partners, their luck and their character all worked out by the aid of charts, celestial and sky maps, position of stars and the planets, a radix and a wheel and a few other odds and ends.

Scorpio is the 8th sign of this astrological chart. A person with this astrological star sign is born between the dates October 23 to November 22nd. These people are considered to be very intense in everything they do, unforgiving if crossed (the sting in the tail), passionate, loyal, protective of their family and friends, and secretive. Considering the Scorpios I know, this is somewhat true. However I also had an Aunt Scorpio and she was the jolliest, happiest, most loving person in the world, who wouldn't hurt a fly. She also played the harmonica like a pro, painted beautifully and had a pet goldfish and canary. Fortunately, not in the same container.
9. Nine is a powerful number associated with which country's culture?

Answer: China

In China, the number nine is associated with long life, magic and power, particularly when further associated with the mythical dragon. There are nine different forms of the Chinese dragon, with each of the nine number associated with a particular category of life.

This symbol can be seen in various places around the beautiful land even today, particularly so in the Forbidden City itself. Nine is a number that was also once associated with the mighty Chinese emperor himself, while the platform on the Temple of Heaven has circular plates with various combinations always adding up to nine or its multiples. On a more worldly level, the nine-rank system was part of the organisation of the old Chinese civil service, and the nine-dotted line today is the limit of the area claimed today by China in the South China Sea.
10. Biblically speaking, there were ten different events such as this one. Do you know to which they refer?

Answer: Ten plagues of Egypt

The number ten appears 242 times in the Bible, all of which are associated with various events. Ten generations of man lived before the events of Noah and the Great Flood, for example, there were Ten Commandments given to the people with which they had to abide, the Day of Atonement was on the tenth day of the seventh month, and God sent ten plagues down upon Egypt until the Pharaoh finally relented and allowed the Israelites to leave the land.

Exodus 8:1-4 in the KJV states that "And the LORD spake unto Moses, Go unto Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Let my people go, that they may serve me. 8:2 And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs: 8:3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into thine house, and into thy bedchamber, and upon thy bed, and into the house of thy servants, and upon thy people, and into thine ovens, and into thy kneading troughs: 8:4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee, and upon thy people, and upon all thy servants".
